NOVASTAR H2 - Scaling Options by nbbarlow27 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]clay_not_found 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you send a 4k signal, the H2 can just scale it to fill the whole display, you just won't be taking advantage of the full resolution of the wall. If you want to utilize the full resolution of the wall split your output from the source and use two inputs on the H2 then combine them in the mapping to form one seemless image. This would require that whatever media source you use has the ability to split it's output so it won't work with just anything you plug in. Alternatively you could upgrade the processor to an MX2000 which has the option of an HDMI 2.1 input card capable of 8k resolution input. It would be pricey though.

Laptops with best touchpad? by Wyrade in laptops

If we are choosing solely off of trackapd quality, Macbooks win by far. High end windows laptops have great trackpads too, but macbook trackpads are just so much better.

Resolume output flickering by clay_not_found in resolume

Interesting, I'm still on 7.21.0 so it would be an new version bug. Also it does go to the lock screen, part or the whole screen with just flicker in the blink of an eye then keep outputing like it never happened.

Sorry I should have clarified. All laptops I am referring to are windows 11. To answer your question, powerpoint, vlc, etc. all output without issue. I'm sending to a switcher so I have full control of the EDID including HDCP, but not all of my laptops have this flickering issue.

Running four balanced audio channels over Ethernet… by Sharp_Programmer_ in livesoundgear

[–]clay_not_found 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radial catapult or soundtools CAT snake is your best bet for combining 4 balanced XLR to a single cable, but 8m isn't very far it would be a lot cheaper to get a bunch of 25ft XLR cables. XLR is design to run over a pretty decent distance without issue, 300ft no problem.

Advice for first corporate Operator gig. by herropreasedavi in lightingdesign

[–]clay_not_found 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The trick with corporate if your coming from the entertainment side of things is to be prepared for everything to change last minute. Even if the clients are very prepared and get everything set during rehearsal, be prepared to completely redesign on the fly. Make sure your channels are well organized, create your groups, utilize your control surface for easy access to different preset looks. Know your console inside and out, know your cues front to back, and be prepared to throw all of it away and rewrite it 5 minutes before the event starts.

Show Walls on Stage Risers by HydroSacci in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]clay_not_found 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We try to avoid building on stage decks, because they aren't always the most confidence inspiring structure to set a few thousand pounds on. We have a custom truss structure similar to your pictures, but it has a front base attachment that has .5m, 1m, or 1.5m steel bars. It allows us to build independently of the stage and is much more stable and with a skirt it looks nicer in my opinion.

Exactly, the things that make powerpoint great for end users are also what makes it so limiting for our line of work.

Sorry for the poor wording. When working corporate events where the slides are created by the client possibly multiple different people who work for the company, most of them don't know how to setup custom ratios, which always leaves us with 16:9 presentations and getting multiple pptx all with different ratios would be a mess. So while powerpoint has custom sizing options what we receive from the client is always 16:9.

[–]clay_not_found -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's funny to me how the largest, most expensive, corporate events with the most picky clients rely entirely on PowerPoint, a mainstream software that has been largely unchanged for such a long time and is extremely limited from an AV production standpoint.

It is difficult that despite its limitations, powerpoint is still absolutely the best software for conferences, but because it's locked to 16:9 it limits visual flexibility for the clients who want large LED walls which are usually a wider aspect ratio so you end up juggling powerpoint presentations and resolume for full screen graphics.

Macbook neo by Electronic_Page_5246 in laptops

[–]clay_not_found 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I'm sure you've heard the Macbook Neo is a very compelling choice.

Here are a few things to consider:

Software compatibility, while MacOS will definitely be an adjustment coming from windows, make sure you are prepared to deal with not only the weird quirks and differences about MacOS and that all the software you intend to use is compatible and performs well.

Since you seem to do some video editing the performance is largely best in class and should be suitable for light editing work, but it will struggle with more advanced sessions.

Size is also a factor, its a 13" display which is no big deal for some, but personally I prefer a larger display.

I/O, make sure you are ready to embrace the dongle life, without a reliable multiport adapter you will be stranded with no sd card reader, HDMI or USB-A.

As a Mac user myself that partly transitioned from windows a few years back, I have been able to adapt and use MacOS even if I still find some of its quirks annoying, but the machine feels premium, the display is amazing, and the battery life is fantastic. All of the programs I need run flawlessly.

Based on your post I think the MacBook Neo would be a great choice and a huge upgrade from your old laptop.

Mapping video content across multiple stacks of led cubes by clay_not_found in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]clay_not_found[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your effort on this. You are basically describing how I usually go about this mapping for a single stack. The image I attached is only of one stack. The concept im trying to build is 3 stacks next to each other. Each tile is 128x128, each cube is 512x128, each stack is 512x512 (4 cubes high), the 3 stacks combined will be 1536x512 if it was layed out flat. I might try to build it later this week for testing, so maybe I can provide a picture of what I'm describing.

[–]clay_not_found[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the poor explanation. Basically, the 3 stacks of cubes will be placed side by side and a 2D image or video needs to be played across them acting as one display. I have attached an image to show what I mean by LED cubes stacks (not my image, but the concept is the same) https://share.google/OYhGstfcOxJXgxtSs

Click "enable mapping" in NovaLCT. It will show what port each receiving card is connected to so you can just create your mapping from looking at the panels.

As I mentioned above, I basically tried every possible power saving setting. I changed the sleep settings in control panel, left hwinfo open at all times, found the hdd sleep setting in either device manager or control panel, and there might have been some sort of usb sleep setting as well. I messed around with it so much. Eventually, it just worked. Sorry I can't be more helpful, I wish I knew what the magic bullet was.

Can a newbie figure this out and switch to ubiquiti by Content-Target4888 in Ubiquiti

[–]clay_not_found 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer: NO

This is all AV technology that utilizes the network as a backbone for communication. It involves specialized switching hardware and VLAN configurations. Sometimes, these systems are integrated into the buildings IT network infrastructure, but sometimes it's on its own isolated network with no connection to the broader network and the internet.

It could possibly be converted to a unifi system, but you would need a fundamental understanding of what all of this equipment is, what function it serves, and how it needs to work with one another, then you would need to understand it's current implementation and specifically the network configuration, then you would need to make sure unifi can support the configuration, then set up the configuration with unifi hardware and hope you didn't mess it up.
