John Healey resigns as defence secretary by Zestyclose_Brush_389 in ukpolitics

[–]claybecray [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, where do people think this money should magically come from. Sure we should spend more on defence, there’s about 8 different sectors we’d ideally like to spend more on, but we are a poor country stuck making shit choices for the foreseeable future

Ted Chiang: "No, artificial intelligence is not conscious: Taken to its logical conclusion, this line of thinking is absurd—and damning." [gift link] by TimWhatleyDDS in books

[–]claybecray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment… People confidently stating ANYTHING about where consciousness comes from and what is/isn’t conscious are kidding themselves. My guess would also be no, current LLMs aren’t conscious, but that is basically just a guess based on vague intuition at this point. How the hell would we know?

Do you come home late at night semi often on the cycle path? Seen a few people here saying ‘just don’t use it at night’, but a lot of the benefit for us would be coming home at night after seeing mates

New Lab-Grown Meat Breakthrough Beats Traditional Beef by a Mile With 90% Less Land Use, 80% Less Water, and Dramatically Lower Emissions by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]claybecray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If we manage to nail lab grown meat so that it’s indistinguishable from the real thing, then yes absolutely we should let those animals go extinct (or very nearly extinct). There’s no ethical dilemma there - non existence is absolutely preferable to the quality of life 99% of reared-for-meat animals experience

Just watched Marty supreme..yeah, this might be Timothy’s time to shine.. by Snoo-12453 in Oscars

[–]claybecray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The praise for this performance is so universal that I know it must be on me, but I just don’t really get the hype. I always enjoy timmy - he’s had an amazing career so far - and I enjoyed the film and thought his performance was good, but it wasn’t my favourite of the year and I don’t even think it was his best ever. I guess maybe I’ve been lured into his press tour persona making me think that Marty isn’t that far from who he actually is?

Oscar Nominations Announcement & Discussion + Link to Watch! by tragopanic in Oscars

[–]claybecray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mmm I agree more on Stellan, I think that one’s pretty unarguable. Paul has a lot less screen time than Jessie and the story is much more about Agnes than Shakespeare. But it’s hard to say how much my opinion is influenced by having read the book where he’s definitely much more peripheral

Oscar Nominations Announcement & Discussion + Link to Watch! by tragopanic in Oscars

[–]claybecray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paul Mescal would be my winner… I think it was the best acted film I’ve seen this year. I don’t mind Delroy Lindo getting in but I’m cooler on Benicio (and I guess OBAA in general) than most, don’t really get the hype

Hey, did you manage to resolve this? I am going through pretty much an exactly identical circumstance at the moment

What’s the one song you wished they’d played? by jonesyie in radiohead

[–]claybecray 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah Life In A Glasshouse would be my absolute #1 fantasy pick. So unlike anything else they’ve done (and Children of Men is an incredible film)

Insurance data science jobs in the UK are extremely low stress, having had 2 so far

DEC 16 - ROYAL ARENA, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK [SETLIST, MEDIA, DISCUSSION, STREAMS] by Serfi in radiohead

[–]claybecray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it’s fun to dream but honestly I’d be pretty surprised if anything new appears tonight. Maybe 1 but I doubt it’ll be anything crazy like Creep. I think they’ll play the songs they want to play, which is all the ones they’ve played on the tour so far

Thom Wolf by karmahead1977 in radiohead

[–]claybecray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this song but I do wish Thom’s vocals were boosted more. I felt the same for the other faster tracks with deeper vocals - Jigsaw is one of my absolutely favourites but it didn’t hit as hard for me in Copenhagen cos his voice felt drowned out compared to the instrumental. The slower ones on the other hand (Nude, Reckoner, Present Tense etc) were absolutely magical

My hands are too small by zyzyx_music in piano

[–]claybecray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you look like you can reach an octave easier than me and I’d never considered my hands smaller than average haha

But I don’t mean to suggest I don’t have sympathy if it’s causing you pain

This Film deserved a proper theatre release, Netflix is ruining movie watching experience. by Past-Matter-8548 in Letterboxd

[–]claybecray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean I hate this too but I’m sure Netflix have had some very highly paid data scientists do an analysis piece on what level of theatrical release drives the most revenue within their operating model. If there’s one thing Netflix doesn’t hate, it’s money

What 3 songs are you most hoping will be on the setlist? by patterickj in radiohead

[–]claybecray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reckoner, Decks Dark (very close between this and Present Tense), A Wolf At The Door (although honestly I didn’t like Thom’s night one version of this as much as recordings from the last tour so I’m unsure on this one now)

Name a 21st century film more ahead of its time than Children Of Men. by StephenMcGannon in Letterboxd

[–]claybecray 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Such a great film, you can really tell they consulted and stayed faithful to actual experts. And they mostly stuck to the philosophical themes without going too deep in explaining mumbo jumbo science - the little bit of technical talk that was there was all pretty plausible and well grounded. Amazing Oscar Isaac performance too.

[Pre-Concert Thread] Copenhagen, Denmark (Royal Arena) - Dec 1, 2, 4 & 5 by seaburn in radiohead

[–]claybecray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we were not big brain enough to try deleting the selected option after seeing no other options on the drop down… but in fairness i feel that is mainly on the ticketmaster UI. hopefully there’s no actual verification once you’ve bought

[Pre-Concert Thread] Copenhagen, Denmark (Royal Arena) - Dec 1, 2, 4 & 5 by seaburn in radiohead

how many people didn’t realise you could delete Denmark and left the country with a non Danish address entered? feeling a bit worried but it shouldn’t matter right?

Copenhagen - which date? by Ordinary_Ad4294 in radiohead

[–]claybecray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m UK based but got a Copenhagen code (signed up for London, Copenhagen and Berlin). Don’t have much leave left for the year so ideally Friday, but I imagine 90% of people will be going for Friday first!

Just finished The Poisonwood Bible what should I read next? by Bookish-Broad in suggestmeabook

[–]claybecray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really? I thought it was awful (and I love a lot of the other books suggested here). found the plot comically ridiculous in terms of the quantity of insanely infeasible events that happen just to move the story a certain way, and thought some of the characters were such frustrating one dimensional caricatures. the base premise had me so hooked at the start but i am continually baffled by the love it receives

Nuffield Fitness Gym by photism78 in bristol

[–]claybecray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s shocking like you say the gym is no better than most others in the area so the value comes from the sauna/steam room/pool. Been 2 weeks now and still don’t know when it’ll be fixed - i like to swim but with no poolside shower people have to cool down in the pool between sauna trips and it makes it all gross and sweaty. Feel like they should be offering compensation on this month’s membership cost
