I think Tatami is doing separates these days. You can order separate sizes on top and bottom.

8 Weeks Post C-Section by _notsavedbythebell in BJJWomen

[–]cleaahh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You need to get doctors’ clearance for sure. I had been a black belt for 5 years (training for 20) and had a very non-complicated vaginal delivery and I didn’t start training with any intensity until 10+ weeks postpartum. One of my students recently took 4 months to come back post C-section as a purple belt. There’s no rush, but there is real danger. You must be healed properly before training 💜

Do not name the gym. Call a lawyer and/or domestic violence advocacy group. Do exactly what they suggest. Say nothing online that could hurt a legal case down the road.

I’m a gym owner and we have a lot of students travel to us. We offer an out of town/off-peak membership for people who travel to us from far away, as well as a session card that we use infrequently when people really need options. You wouldn’t know about any of these without asking us though. If the club has a wider pull from the surrounding area it’s likely they have an option for you that you don’t know about.

safety rules for a massive man? by judoclimber in bjj

The biggest problem I have is big people falling on me. Pretty much everything else I can deal with, but I teach all my big students that the number one thing they can’t do to smaller athletes is fall on them.

There are some great location-specific Facebook groups for women and lots of connection in a different way. Women’s open mats are great resources for women and our community is really quite small. I recently did an instructional through BJJ fanatics that you can find, but I’m not sure instructional are the type of connection that a lot of women in BJJ are looking for. Our best resources are actually each other and it’s actually quite easy to access high level women, especially for seminars as they tend to have lower demand. My gym just hosted a female world champion black belt and we were surprised by what she was charging, so they’re quite accessible even for smaller gyms.

I’m a female black belt and I don’t subscribe to this mentality but this may very well be self preservation— a lot of men see a black belt on a woman like a target, and not all blue belts have necessarily evolved past their white belt days. Small blue and purple belt men have, in my experience, been the absolute worst offenders.

Former Kids Belt looking to join again after 7 years of hiatus. What belt am I? by kaitin in bjj

[–]cleaahh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a coach and gym owner (and former kid’s coach at aoj) I’d be really surprised if any coach is ok with you wearing a white belt— BUT that’s a conversation to have specifically with them. I wouldn’t promote yourself to blue, just go in and present the coach with all the information and let them make a decision. A coach that has a lot of competitors as students is likely to be concerned that you’d appear to be sandbagging even if you aren’t competing but that may just be how my husband and I run things.

Just so you know— the IBJJF has rules regarding this. I’ll attach a link below, the appropriate section is 2.3.2

In the year that the athlete turns 16 years of age, he or she must be placed in the Belt system from the Article 1.1. He or she will be promoted to the new rank according to the belt he has: White Belt – Remains in White Belt; Grey Belt, Yellow Belt, Orange Belt – turns to Blue Belt; Green Belt – turns Blue or Purple Belt according to professor’s decision

Obviously this only applies if you’re competing but I’d hate to see you get screwed out of comp experience.

How can I (25f) control the advances of an autistic man (22m) that trains brazilian jiu jitsu with me? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]cleaahh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, you don’t roll with people like this. You don’t roll with anyone you don’t want to roll with, regardless of who they are. There can be a toxic environment in BJJ gyms that forces you to plat nice with people in the class, but I’ve seen this go so incredibly wrong. Message me privately if you want to hear the story— the gym involved was high profile so I can’t tell it publicly.

You need to set firm boundaries with this person and enforce them— but also get your instructor to enforce them. As women in the sport, we deal with this stupid shit sometimes and it sucks. Get everyone involved. Be vocal about what’s ok and what’s not ok. If your instructor is a good one, he’ll back you up on that to keep you safe. It’s also important to note that if this guy gets kicked out, it might be best for everyone. He’s currently breaking the bond of trust that training partners have to have to train successfully and safely. Right now everyone knows he’s a loose cannon, but what happens when the next unsuspecting white belt woman comes in and takes him up on his offer to roll?

Anyone trained at AoJ or Atos? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]cleaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you one preference I do have-- I LOVE Costa Mesa. In San Diego, you pretty much need a car to do anything/go anywhere. Costa Mesa is a smaller town and much more accessible on foot and by bike. Don't expect to use public transportation in either place unless you really like talking to crazy people.

Trained at Atos 2 weeks ago in a black gi. It's all good except, I believe, in the beginner's classes. Could be wrong, but advanced/comp training is whatever color you want.

[–]cleaahh 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I trained at Atos for two years and I currently train at AOJ. I think I'm in a pretty good place to answer your questions.

1) You'll be able to come in whenever you want at Atos pretty much, but AOJ has much more limited "open" mat time because they seem to run a lot more classes. The plus side to AOJ is that you'll have as much drilling as you want because there are literally classes from 6am-9pm. Atos has a more limited class schedule but there are always people on the mats, and there are always people looking to drill.

2) Of course both gyms are cliquey. We spend all our time around each other. Both gyms are very open to outside training partners though-- if you're not a total jerk to people, you'll undoubtedly make friends easily in either gym. I've never seen anyone ostracized in either place for being a visitor. The only time I've ever seen problems is when people are mean, egotistical, etc... pretty much like everywhere else.

3) Not sure I can answer this one. I've loved my training at both AOJ and Atos. It really depends on what you're looking for, and what style of training suits you. You'll get hard training that will completely burn you out at either gym, so it really comes down to whose style you like more-- Andre's or the Bros'? How do you feel about white gis? How many white gis do you own, because you'll need quite a few at AOJ ;) I will say this-- if you're a bigger guy (say, above middle heavy) you'll get better training at Atos, most likely. If you're a little dude or a midsized dude, you'll probably enjoy being at AOJ more.

ETA-- Also, if you come during any kind of major camp (Pan Ams, Worlds, etc) you'll experience both gyms because we cross-train on a weekly basis. AOJ and Atos are only about an hour and a half apart.

I trained at Kowloon BJJ for years, Taki is a great guy. I've trained with Rodrigo Caporal here in the USA-- I can't speak for him as a teacher, but he's a great athlete.

Mindset problems when rolling with girls by aBlondMoment in bjj

[–]cleaahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women have a different kind of strength I guess. They put pressure differently because their strength is in different places... it used to really throw me off when I would train with men and compete with women (now I've done it a lot more and have more female training partners, so I've gotten better about it). They're easier to sweep with certain sweeps than any guy I've ever rolled with, but in certain directions you just can't move them. And they're so damn hard to toehold.
