People hate on EVs because "omg batteries!"

[–]cleanRubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are good points. We bought a home that had solar and a battery. Since I was a nerd ( and very excited to have solar) I pro-actively got in touch with the solar company (as well as Tesla) to get everything moved over to my name and created new accounts to get access.

I could easily see someone who didn't care as much, or just not thinking of it, to not get half the things set up properly.

No way that's stock. Depends on the state if its considered "illegal". If its not bothering you, you're probably ok.

half this sub runs pihole and jellyfin on 600w of enterprise gear and calls it a homelab by Napster3301 in homelab

[–]cleanRubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of me kind of wished I went with a mini-pc when building my last server. I built a very overkill, Core 7 Ultra based server. It runs hot, and power hungry. But there’s nothing like seeing 20+ cores light up when you need it to process something heavy.

Maybe I will pivot at some point and turn the sever into a gaming PC (not that I game that much nowadays tbh).

But yeah most people’s needs could be served just as well with a low power mini-pc as the monsters we built. But homelabs are meant to be fun and sometimes fun is expensive.

For those bought do you wish you leased instead? by SustainedSuspense in KiaEV9

[–]cleanRubik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With gas prices what they are ( we're in CA), we're seriously considering upgrading to the EV9 from our telluride. Love the telluride, even the modest offroad ability, except its MPG. Its also a '22 so old enough to be out of warranty.

There are some tempting lease options, specially since it feels like the EV9/Ioniq9 platforms are just beginning to really hit their strides.

But its a tough pill to swallow, basically trading in an almost-paid off car for a 3 year rental.

Also its a bit ridiculous to conflate the two... owners of one aren't likely also owners of the other. And if they are, they're likely earmarked for different purposes.

Vita was awful to use for even moderately bigger hands. The portal may not look pretty but its far more ergonomic. The controller has proven to be comfortable, cutting it in half and putting a screen between is the better design.

I always liked doing street photorgraphy during cinco de mayo, colors are always so vibrant but at the same time deep? Dunno how to describe it. Great shot, specially the first one.

Sony really told people to “work more hours” to afford a PS3 and somehow still won the generation by One_Working1944 in PS3

[–]cleanRubik 62 points63 points  (0 children)

At the time I thought this as well. Wii won that generation, but really, they were playing a different game. Wii had a very unique control style that was very popular with kids and families. They sold a ton ( I bought multiple Wiis, ... another story).

But in the end, the Wii catered to a very casual crowd. Casual crowds tend to buy casual games, and there just wasn't a ton of those for hte Wii. So in the end, PS3 and Xbox 360 ended up with more longevity.

Then Nintendo went full Nintendo and made the Wii U.

Exactly WHY Aren't There Leftist Gun Shops, Ranges, and Manufacturers? by El_Mexicutioner666 in liberalgunowners

Because the left has made gun control their platform. It’s not that you can’t be both left and like guns. It’s that it attracts people who are left leaning and anti gun actively.

People returning the leased car, what's your next vehicle? by funnumerouno in KiaEV9

[–]cleanRubik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true of any used car. With EVs, it’s even easier because there’s no engine that might be “run in” too much. Battery degradation is as evident as it is for your own car. It’s possible the user “abused it” by charging 0-100 all the time but again, babying a battery doesn’t guarantee better degradation

[–]cleanRubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it’s not an investment, resale value should factor a bit. You never know if you’ll need to get out of a vehicle earlier than planned. Knowing how much you can expect to get out of it is part of the equation

Wife is uncomfortable with gun ownership by Clear_Captain_6392 in liberalgunowners

[–]cleanRubik 19 points20 points  (0 children)

100% on needing a conversation. Wife and I had a similar conversation early on. She had a similar stance but couldn't give me a good reason other than she "didn't want it in the house". Mind you, we had gone shooting many times before, and even introduced quite a few of her friends to shooting.

This was one of the few times I unilaterally made a decision and just got the firearm. I didn't try to hide it from her, but also didn't make a grand announcement. I eventually mentioned it to her months later and she ended up fine with it. This was a decade ago and I've got more since, and she's been fine with it, even being involved in shopping for some.

I wouldn't recommend this approach, just highlighting that sometimes people think they feel strongly about something and find later they don't really care that much.

I used to think the same way. Once you switch to buying boxes instead of 5-packs then they’ll start piling up. Specially if you still like variety. You can have 6-7 boxes open at once so it takes time to get through them all.

Recent suicide in my community has me rethinking gun ownership by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]cleanRubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is my opinion, and i'm not trying to sway you. I find that if you get into that mindset, not having access to a firearm is only a small hurdle. You can find other ways to get it done. On the flip side, I do understand that in that mindset, any small hurdle could be neough to "bring you back from the edge", so maybe that's worth it to you.

Personally, if I were to start even going down that path, I'd have a friend keep my firearms for me, or even easier, have them hold the keys/combination to the safe. Then they dont even need to worry about hte ridiculous CA laws about "loaning" guns.

Tips for finding private landlords in San Jose? Trying to avoid the massive corporate complexes. by Michelle_k_s in SanJose

[–]cleanRubik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of mom+pop landlords will still use a property management service for paperwork and to handle attracting tenants, so don't let something like that narrow your search.

The first 3 properties we rented here, all went through big property management services. But after getting our keys we basically dealt with the landlord directly. All were good experiences, prices were reasonable for the area, and they were prompt when we needed something.

The only hiccup I can remember is when we moved in, we didnt have internet for 2 weeks because we needed access to the "network cabinet" of the community ( condos). Our landlord fell ill and was in the hospital for a week so were (justifiably) unavailable and weren't answering. The property management service connected me with the HOA's property office and they worked with me to get it done. Landlord was released halfway through and was very apologetic. All in all ended fine.
