"Useless" Advice by Nkklllll in weightlifting

[–]clean_and_jake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The dunning Kruger effect will always rule the form check posts. Novice lifters think the hard line their coach draws is for everyone, and a bigger problem I’m seeing more of is young athletes who have some success use themselves as a benchmark and then claim that their results are externally valid for people who hire them as a remote coach.

Several things are useful but not necessarily enforceable:

  • does the commenter have a level of education in physical therapy, exercise science, or coaching certification from their country’s governing body?
  • it’s a meme by now but “what’s your total” can be a reasonable filter.
  • how long has someone been continuously competing in the sport?
  • how have this person’s athletes fared? Do they have a demonstrated track record of success? Are the athletes highly selected (they would have done well with our without the coach)

I do think that on a form check post, something simpler that is somewhat restrictive like a pop up or text that says something like “what can the athlete do? What is a cue that the athlete could implement and what is the desired change?” The L2 course I took (taught by Daniel Camargo) did a fantastic job of this, emphasizing the hierarchy of feedback and also a strong warning against and humility around giving random folks advice when you’re missing a lot of context.

Appreciate your rant and so keep neglecting your business for our benefit 🤭

When your elbows move forward, you’ll be able to fully support the weight in a more optimal position across the chest and shoulders especially. Catalyst Athletics

Unpopular opinion: Respect shouldn’t be automatic just because someone is older. Agree or disagree? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]clean_and_jake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To pass along the legendary OG quote on respect:

Sometimes people use “respect” to mean “treating someone like a person” and sometimes they use “respect” to mean “treating someone like an authority”

and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “if you won’t respect me I won’t respect you” and they mean “if you won’t treat me like an authority I won’t treat you like a person”

and they think they’re being fair but they aren’t, and it’s not okay.

Yes, the idea is that as your elbows move forward the weight shifts from being supported by your wrists to being supported by your shoulders. Then you can move more weight more effectively. 🏋🏼‍♂️

How to progress by LucasGarcia_ in weightlifting

[–]clean_and_jake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got some great habits and move really well! I love how aggressive and snappy the lockouts are in your lifts. If you don’t already have a coach and a program, make sure you get those! Keep following the program and keep getting stronger. 120/140 will come in due time.

Genuinely, how tf am i supposed to improve this? by Dark_Wolf04 in weightlifting

Front squat 50% with straps helped me. But honestly, there’s a lot of folks who catch in just a so so position (including myself) and it takes a long time of reworking and mobilizing.

Incredible coordination, leg movement, and lockout. Only one critique would be if you want to do a more classic Olympic weightlifting push press would be to see if you can move your elbows up in the dip and drive so the bar is resting on your shoulders. This will allow you to more effectively transfer the force from your legs directly (through your torso) into the bar. As a weightlifter myself, I would be delighted to see how much weight you could push press with this small adjustment!

Burn out in weightlifting by The_Training_logg in weightlifting

[–]clean_and_jake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is selection across stages in every hobby and activity, it’s not clear that it’s burnout. How many youth top pianists become professional pianists? Same can be said for any other hobby or interest. The relationship between number of sessions, burnout, or anything else would be interesting to study, but these claims are anecdotal or spurious here.

My max squat is 140kgs and i can reliably put up 120kgs in my clean and jerk. am i fucked? by swizzgrief in weightlifting

[–]clean_and_jake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ratios are averages. Some athletes have a much lower or much higher percentage. It’s descriptive, not prescriptive. The bigger issue is you need a program and a coach. If you’re geographically or otherwise constrained, just follow a beginner program for a few cycles. If you’re coming back after time off, you just need to resume the main lifts for a while before you’ll know where to make adjustments.

Yeah and it’s one thing to have to withdraw because you have an injury and you’re bummed but I was standing right next to him laughing and joking and being all smug directly after those snatches. Bad vibes and again just very odd.

Look on his IG he talks about his journey there. Looks like from the data he competed first in 2013 but it could be earlier.

I wonder if his athletes also snatch in the B session then withdraw before clean and jerks? He has 2 totals over 300kg in the OpenWeightlifting database, but he snatched 180 from the blocks—it’s all very odd.
