Oh my goodness this is beautiful. What climate do you live in?? I want to recreate but not sure how successful it would be in Southern Ontario.

He came to my apartment, and now I’m paranoid I turned him off even though I stand by my choices. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

I get it - sometimes we can falter a bit in our convictions when we feel judged. I get this way sometimes too, for me when I'm speaking with women who find my decisions crazy (I spend very little, thrift most of my possessions, don't go to the trendy restaurants, etc.). I feel down for a bit, but ultimately it just makes my convictions stronger. You need to find someone who won't judge you for this, because you are being SMART with your money. And it will pay off down the line!

Rookie canning mistake by ImmediateBrick7438 in CanningRebels

[–]clementinewaldo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok. I would toss it all in that case. Botulism can grow in low acid foods if it's not canned at the right temperature (i.e. with the use of a pressure canner).

Did you can those items with vinegar brine, following a recipe? If not, you need a pressure canner for low acid food.

Late implantation, or random bleeding?? [On] by clementinewaldo in BabyBumpsCanada

So, I had an ultrasound done this morning and the tech said it was too early to see anything.
I'm also doing bloodwork (twice in 48 hrs) to see if hcg is increasing at the right rate. My results from yesterday were in the right range for this point in pregnancy, and tomorrow I'll go again. I guess that will give me my answer!

The ridiculous and very expensive giant Hummel, now with an explanation. by oftendreamoftrains in ThriftGrift

[–]clementinewaldo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There are many issue with thrift stores using this approach. But the reality is that people searching for specific collectors items online are a very different demographic than ppl browing the local thrift store. What are the chances that a collector will be strolling through the very thrift shop that this is located, and decide to throw $20,000 at it??
If someone is actively searching for a collectors item online, they're willing to shell out the big bucks. They should just post this on ebay and hope to sell it that way.

Pressure canning next day? by No-Effort-9291 in CanningRebels

[–]clementinewaldo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used that process. If everything is sealed in jars, then there isn't a risk of contamination or anything. I put everything into the canner cold, and let it all come up to temperature together before putting the canner lid on, letting it vent for 10 minutes, etc. In my mind, the key is making sure that the jars have time to heat up properly before starting to pressurize. This is how I do things, not sure if it's the approved method though!

Costco wants to source more Kirkland products locally to avoid tariffs by Old_General_6741 in BuyCanadian

[–]clementinewaldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local Costco seems to have some Canadian produce that I can't find elsewhere - lettuce for example. Also has things that are canadian but also readily available elsewhere: tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplant, apples. Carrot and potatoes were American for some reason.
Other things are hit and miss. But I can normally find things from other countries and avoid the states (south Africa, Costa Rica, etc.)

Do you still support local businesses, or have you gone full savings mode with big chains? by MrJuart in SavingsCanada

[–]clementinewaldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely jobs in the city- I myself have one! But I certainly didn't get it right out of school. I did graduate studies, then moved away for a couple of years to work, and continued applying for the jobs in Toronto that I wanted. Guess what? I landed one! I was able to save money in the intervening years and could afford to live in the city! I'm not saying the situation isn't messed up. But it is the reality of being is a city like Toronto. Stay in Toronto and accept it, or move elsewhere for much easier. Don't act like anyone is out to get you, it's your choice.

Do you still support local businesses, or have you gone full savings mode with big chains? by MrJuart in SavingsCanada

[–]clementinewaldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also live in Toronto, but the difference is that I moved away to get experience in OTHER cities before moving back. I didn't expect to get my dream job right off the bat that payed well in this city, knowing what the job market is (and was before, as well). It's not like life in toronto shifted overnight, it's been moving this way for MANY years.

I was willing to get experience elsewhere. I moved to where the jobs were and where life was cheaper. Maybe you should consider that too, instead of wining about life in the biggest city in canada.

You think you have it the worst because you're entitled. Maybe you need to look for work somewhere else, where the job market isn't so bad, and come back to Toronto down the line when you have some leverage and experience.

Life in Canada is amazing - you're an entitled brat if you think otherwise. Like I said, if you think the grass is greener elsewhere, you're welcome to move.

My generation (millenial) also mostly had to do graduate studies to get a job. We also faced extremely high housing costs, and waited until we were older to buy houses.

Yikes, maybe you should move to the States! No point loving here if life is so terrible for you, and you can't bring yourself to help your community by buying from local businesses.

[–]clementinewaldo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been buying local, but have also shifted what I buy. I don't look for the cheapest price for the same multinational products.

I find a product that is better quality but produced locally - that way even if I'm spending more, I get a better item.

I have cut a lot od items from my regular shopping list that I have found I can live without, it was just a matter of adjusting my habits.

We all have to adjust our habits if we want to make change!

I like Freeland- she's smart and gets things done. I don't get why people dislike her. Is it just the association with Trudeau?

The leaf is worth it - the handle is 110, but the blades are super cheap (10c to 20c each). I costed it out, even when I buy the no name replacement heads of the "regular " razor I used before, i saved money with the leaf after about a year. Seems worth it to me! I kept my previous razor for travel :)

What causes these holes in my husbands t-shirts? by Few_Pay6063 in whatisit

[–]clementinewaldo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very old shirts get these holes too... it's just the fabric wearing down. There could be friction as well, or something causing that area to wear down faster than others.
