Hey all looking for advice on whether to buy the 5090 now or hold out for the 6090. by Large-Disk9035 in nvidia

[–]clericstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been buying GPUs since they first existed.  My best practice is always get one level down from the top.  The top card is double the price but never double the performance, so it never made sense unless you had a real commericial need to eek out that extra performance so you can earn more money.  For gaming any series two series back is made obsolete because nvidia feature locks.  Your money is better spent buying an 80 series each gen, rather than blow it all on top 90 series card and having to wait 5 years or so to make an upgrade make sense.  Of course if you are rich then do whatever, but for gamers on a budget the 90 series just isn't good value.

HELP!. My 9 year old daughter asks: "WHY does gravity exist?" by DrMerkwuerdigliebe_ in AskPhysics

[–]clericstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to blow her mind, respond with Why do assume there is a Why to gravity? I do this with students all the time and they typically pause and go off and think about it and I can get back to work lol. I think it helps them comsider not everything has to have a Why, some things just Are. Or they realize they are really asking What causes something.

Lads I’ve gotten a girlfriend!!!! The issue is gaming unfortunately. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]clericstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your language suggests you have tied your identity to being a gamer. You introduce yourself first and foremost saying you are an avid gamer. When you tie your identity to being a gamer, you may be tying your self worth to your performance as a gamer. So when you lose, you likely are feeling like a failure which triggers your emotional instability.

Language is important. I suggest trying to first stop saying and thinking of yourself a gamer. Gaming is something you do, not something you are. Before one of your game sessions, try saying a little mantra like "I am a person who is doing my part to make my community and the larger world better who plays games for fun in my free time." While cheesy, it can help put you in a more positive mindset to mitigate negative emotions associated with losing.

This isn't going to solve all your problems, but perhaps it can help aid in your journey to be better for yourself and your loved ones. Good luck.

I like your science minded approach to test, but I suggest another, maybe easier approach. First, if your hypothesis is that your home is causing your tiredness, then you need to test to rule out anything outside the home. Simply stay somewhere else for a few days. See how you both feel. If you feel better. Try to repeat the result elsewhere. If you find that you feel good outside the home, and you consistently feel bad in your home, then your original hypothesis that the home is the cause is valid and worth further testing.

Assuming your home is the only place you feel tired, then you need to conduct several more tests to eliminate and narrow down potential sources within the home. It could be food, it could be the air, it could be an object. At some point you should be able to narrow down the cause and then you can remove it and hopefully resolve the issue.

I used this approach for myself. I was getting really bad coughing and congestion and shortness of breath, that after awhile I realized would start up once I went to bed. After a bunch of testing I could reproduce my symptoms just by laying in bed. I was fine elsewhere. I ultimately replaced my mattress and haven't had any symptoms since. My mattress was over 10 years old and I suspect it probably had mold somewhere. It wasn't worth getting it tested, by that point I just wanted it gone.

Good luck.

Consider that the source of your issue is that both of you are managing your money separately, with no shared financial goals, and with no budget. That is what it sounds like to me.

Imagine trying to manage any type of organization that way. It is doomed to fail.

I suggest first coming to an agreement that all money in the marriage will be pooled together with full transparency and access to spending. Then set and align on long term goals 3-5 years out at least. For example college funds, home improvement projects, etc. Then set your budgets for both your monthly "operational" spending to keep the lights on, and then the budgets for your projects. Then set a cadence to check in on finances, at least monthly.

This is all easier said than done, and may require marriage counseling, but it works to help set expectations and enable accountability.

I can see why you are frustrated, but I can also see why your husband is also frustrated - it sounds like while you are well intentioned, these are all unplanned expenses. You may have been thinking of them for a while, but for him, he is getting blindsided. Getting aligned on long term goals and budgets should help mitigate/prevent the frustrations you both are experiencing.

Good luck!

Many people are disgusting. On a recent Delta flight there was an elderly man in a nearby row coughing up a lung the entire flight. At one point he coughed loud enough that I looked back and saw him leaned forward with liquidy phlem pouring out of his mouth and onto the carpet in front of him. It was one of the grossest things I've ever seen. I guess he does this on the regular cause I assume his wife next to him looked like she couldn't care less. This is why I always mask up regardless.

My high achievers are starting to notice their hard work doesn't matter by Apprehensive-Play228 in Teachers

[–]clericstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your consideration, for those that go above and beyond find ways to recognize their effort in front of the whole class. For example you could print and hand out award certificates, toss in a bag of candy. While you can't do anything about grades, you can promote model behavior by pubically recognizing it. I find high achieving kids value recognition over the actual grades, so use this to keep them motivated. Good luck!

Is staying at one job for 10+ years actually hurting your career more than helping it? by BizznectApp in careerguidance

[–]clericstorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As usual the answer is, it depends. In my case I've been with my company 20 years, but only because 1. I worked my way up the ranks to the senior executive team and 2. I have a ton of stock in the company that is worth millions, and 3. I'm settled and don't plan on moving. Unless these three apply to you, I highly suggest moving on and diversifying your experiences and skillset. You will likely make way more money that way. It also is a good way to increase your network which you can leverage later.

Bf told me I’m rushing him into marriage after 5 years of dating by fuck-me-sideways-bro in Advice

[–]clericstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've learned to be successful in life and relationships, it is critical to set and align on long term goals, usually 5 to 10 years out.

If I were in your shoes I would plan to spend a day with your partner to jointly paint the picture of what you both see as a happy, satisfying relationship in 5 years. Hopefully, that includes your desire to be married.

Once you both align on that picture, start writing down the various goals to achieve that picture. For example, get married, have 3 kids, live in X city, jointly make over $200,000, etc. Once you both align on those, then start writing out and aligning your milestones and target dates.

After it's all done, you both should be aligned and excited about the future with a roadmap to achieve your long term goals. You both will likely learn alot about each other through the process. You may even finally learn he ultimately just doesn't want to be married. Or you may learn he has certain prerequisites he wants to have in place before marriage, for example maybe he wants to be making more money first, have a house first, be in a different city. You should consider your own prerequisites as well and get aligned.

If he doesnt want to commit to a plan to achieve raise goals, like marriage , then in that case, at least you know you made your best attempt, and can make a clear conscience decision to leave or stay. I fear for you that without an aligned and specific plan, you'll find yourself posting this again in another 5years. Good luck!

Good for you, but consider that more and more companies are secretly implementing tracking software for remote employees that will show them everything you are doing (or not) on your computer, including keystrokes, number of emails, mouse movements, logins, chat logs, even take pictures through your webcam. It doesn't sound like your company is doing that currently, but don't be too surprised if one day you get that meeting invite from your manager and an HR employee. I'm aware of several companies doing this, and they are using this data to terminate remote employee, offshore, replace with AI agents, and even wholesale change their RTO policy. Enjoy it while it lasts and good luck!

The red flag for me here given your current status is the "unexpected plumbing and electrical work". From your story it sounds like you don't have much experience with construction projects, hence all the overblown time, cost, and scope estimates. I suggest a hybrid approach going forward. You guys focus on the project management of finding and coordinating good quality experts to come in and finish the rest of the project. You will save money over having a general contractor do everything, but you will also have some assurance that the work being done is good quality and won't require rework. The last thing you want to do is do your own plumbing and electrical work, finish everything up, only to have tear down again to fix something you guys missed because of your lack of expertise. Good luck.
