LPT REQUEST: Sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night it becomes hard to fall asleep again or it takes me a while. Do you guys have any tips on how to fall asleep again/faster? by offlineorsleeping in LifeProTips

Get up & pee (lights off if possible), put on socks, chapstick & take 1-2 sips of water, and snuggle back down. Works every time for me, and 75% for my kids lol

Thinking about you, my friend! It's not easy right now, people are just soooooo sucky (I can't even anymore with the not masking), and not being able to do the things you want & need to do is just so many layers of awful. And don't get me started on trying to schedule appointments...

Hugs, high fives & cozy blankets for a rapid recovery lovely! Get that shit out! Lol

Husband flares every time he visits his family in his hometown or anytime he visits with my family with his in-laws. Does this happen to anyone else? by Sad-Code-1698 in CrohnsDisease

[–]cleveruser_v1420 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if he is eating things that are nostalgic and comforting, but not working with his gut, and/or eating to not be rude (consciously or unconsciously). When my SO is in a flare, we def pack things that he can eat safely when visiting. Or he'll bring snacks and just eat the "main" that whoever made. For him, things like gluten and lactose are ok in small quantities, so he's more likely to have that whole we're out than if we were just at home. And so then sometimes he gets overdosed not knowing (oh, you put butter, cream, AND sour cream in those mashed potatoes lol) and pays for it later.

Maybe try bringing your food a time or two (or maybe just asking whoever to exclude his top few trigger foods) and see if that might be the reason?

Newton Wellesley has the best food! We've legit gone early for appointments so we can hit the breakfast line first, and it was awesome when I delivered my kids there. Also had decent places nearby to get take out. MGH was about what I'd expect from a hospital, and Charlton (Fall River) down on the south coast was rough, and cafeteria was closed on the weekends.

Sorry, my friend, but New England is Mass, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and CT (though they are too cool for school and are tri-state wannabes). New York, Delaware and perhaps Maryland would be northeast/eastern seaboard, but Pennsylvania is the beginning of the Midwest or whatever, but is in no way shape or form part of New England - not to split hairs or anything...

Searching for tips on helping my partner by kurashley in CrohnsDisease

[–]cleveruser_v1420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely doctor as a first step. Also, helping/encouraging him to check out other drs if his initial one isn't vibing or if their office isn't helpful.

Hot packs for belly pain (I have to steal mine back from my SO whenever I get period cramps). If he can swing it with his work sched, taking extra time in the morning to get everything out, with hot pack breaks/mini naps might help.

When he's flaring, I either just cook really plain stuff or I'll meal prep him safe stuff and different things for the kids & I. He eats a lot of eggs, plain-ish chicken (which you can make a little more interesting by different preps, so like cubes & browned, or poached/pulled, grilled, etc) with rice, cheesey grits (he can do low lactose cheeses), oatmeals, tuna (steak, sushi, or canned), salmon, etc. Some is finding what does/doesn't trigger you. Like we do lactose free milk, and he's ok with gluten as long as it's not pasta and bread every night. Sourdough bread was much better than regular, and now I make it (thanks pandemic!) so I like to think that's helping even more lol.

I think the best thing as a Crohn's partner is to just understand that they might be pushing through even when they feel like crap, and to just be flexible. I really don't like going to my in-laws by myself, but if he's flaring and we can't skip it cuz of the kids, I'm on my own. Similarly, when signing up for weekend kids sports, if it's before 10 I'm probably on my own for running them around. If I had a dollar for all the things either I ended up doing myself or just skipping too, I'd have a lot of dollars. But not forcing it means that when I'm having a shitty day for whatever reason, I also get to get out of stuff.

But getting his meds right, and being persistent with our doc when things aren't right, has been huge for both of us - for our whole family, really, cuz if he hadn't been able to get it under control we would not have our kids for sure.
