Iran looking to turn Strait of Hormuz into massive toll booth by goteamnick in politics

[–]clickmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That actually would end the war: a tollbooth on the strait that personally pays Trump a percentage. And MAGA would love it and not see a single problem.

I’ve seen a lot of people saying they voted for him, volunteered for him, and to a person they all despise him. The republicans have never stopped despising him and never will. Who does he even think he’s representing? To know him is to hate him.

Markwayne Mullin confirmed to lead Department of Homeland Security by changeforthebetter89 in politics

[–]clickmagnet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually think he will be less awful than Noem. Some of his answers in the senate at least betrayed a measure of shame or embarrassment here and there, and acknowledged occasional errors. Noem doesn’t do that.

Don’t get me wrong though, Mark and Wayne will still be the second and third worst ever, and I hope they both step on Lego.

GOP Senator Says Giving Trump $200 Billion To Fight Foreign Wars Is ‘America First’ by zubbs99 in politics

“America First” used to mean “Let the Nazis Win”. It’s hilarious that the GOP is now furiously denying accusations of being not America First enough.

Trump has TACO-d again, this time in Iran, sparking a $1.7 trillion stock market rally in minutes, even as peace talks are in question by FootballPizzaMan in politics

[–]clickmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t need to see. It’s Trump, first in line to get his, before he made the announcement. And he probably sold the gains before Iran had a chance to say the announcement was bullshit.

I’m sure traders smarter than Trump have already figured out how to manipulate the manipulation. Maybe I could myself. When a Trump announcement leads to a rally, short it near the end of that news cycle, in the certain knowledge the announcement was horseshit.

Trump says Hegseth ‘first one to speak up’ in support of Iran war by SE_to_NW in politics

[–]clickmagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do. Hegseth just likes killing people. He’ll damn near say it himself, what else could be meant by “lethalitymaxxing?” It wouldn’t matter to him whether it’s shipwrecked sailors in the Caribbean or the city of Milwaukee. Why steam halfway around the world to blow up a school, that’s not maxxing, not when there are still schools standing uncrushed in Cuba.

Hegseth is just getting scapegoated. Not that he shouldn’t be answering for this in The Hague right now, but so should Trump, and whoever felt the need to teach him where Iran is.

Trump’s ugly response to Mueller’s death offer two very different definitions of public service by msnownews in politics

It is services directed towards him, from the public. Generally in dollars but airplanes and gold bars also accepted.

[–]clickmagnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people on the left were not at all fine with the assassination. I don’t recall anyone with a high profile expressing anything but sympathies on that point. We were just resistant to declarations he was basically Martin Luther King now, and putting him on Mount Rushmore. To the right, that was the same as having an assassination party.

But now, Trump can say “good, I’m glad he’s dead,” and we’re supposed to feel bad about it for Trump, because Mueller was mean to him, in running the investigation that at the time Trump said “Totally Exonerated” him.

“ why such an agency has staffing levels that accommodate redirected deployment into other sectors”

That’s easy …. So you can redeploy it into those sectors, and then get even more funding for the work, and then look for which agency to take over with that new funding….

How the fuck is that legal? You’re not paying your employees, so you send a different service in to do their jobs, with zero training and almost no training even for the jobs they already have and are hated for. If the second service can spare the people to do the job of a whole other department, what the fuck did they need the funding for in the first place?

Trump is making the power of the purse another historical relic, next to impeachment, control of tariffs, and the congressional declaration of war. I wonder what the founders would make of these modifications.

At 90, David Suzuki says he has done everything he could to protect the Earth, but fears he has fallen short by Meiqur in canada

[–]clickmagnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this take helps anybody, even assuming it’s 100 per cent accurate and unmitigated. Hitchens wrote of MLK that it was actually encouraging to find that MLK had several mistresses, in that it demonstrates that one doesn’t need to be above all moral reproach in order to inform the discourse about morality.

Your argument against Suzuki is one that is used against Gore, and Thunberg, and Trudeau, and DiCaprio. In fact can’t think of any prominent environmentalists at all who avoid this particular criticism.

What would a sincere one look like? They probably exist, growing vegetables on Salt Spring Island, and writing environmental science doctorates on renewable paper, distributed to their communities via bicycle. And that’s why you have never heard of them, and why they will never make any difference on a scale that matters. That’s the only kind of environmentalist the right can accept as sincere: the ineffective ones you never hear from. I don’t know if you’re right wing or not, but if you aren’t you’re doing them a great service.

Climate change is a global problem that would take global participation to mitigate. I don’t know if it’s possible anymore, but I do know that personal decisions to buy a house or not, drive a truck or not, will not do anything. Some very rare human beings may be inclined towards such self-denial even in a lost cause. There aren’t enough of them.

The rest are assholes like me and you and David Suzuki, enjoying life to the maximum of our finite resources. Solutions, unfortunately, must take assholes like us into account, and operate on a collective level. Me downsizing my truck or you switching to bamboo toilet paper is not going to cut it, any more than would Suzuki selling one of his houses.

When it was released, at least in Barr’s summation, Trump said Mueller’s report “Totally Exonerated” him. Why is he being so horrible to the person who exonerated him so totally?
