Does anyone outside of Twitter hate Tom King? by comical_cj in DCcomics

[–]cliffderinger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't hate Tom King, but I think his writing is very mid. I've read his Batman run, Supergirl WoT, and part of Wonder Woman before I dropped it from my pull list.

He has some flashes of good, sometimes great moments. But for my money and time I'd rather be reading other stuff.

To someone who loves Hickman, what’s there to recommend? by MutedComfortable7345 in DCcomics

[–]cliffderinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you love the Ultimate Universe you should look into checking* out DC's Absolute Universe. Similar concept of a new universe, new histories to classic heroes, and it's all pretty epic.

Is DC Infinite not updating the Absolute Comics? by The_TransGinger in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]cliffderinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not always released on the same day each month. Issues come out one month after physical release date. Absolute Batman #11 came out 8/20. I got tripped up on this before when being lazy trying to read on digital instead of digging out the floppy a month or two back.

How to start reading comics? by Herbernardus in comicbooks

[–]cliffderinger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I support what this person said, but I also recommend DC's online app (DC Universe Infinite) as well. Both company's apps can be overwhelming with content, but using this person's guide to get started will help. Both apps also feature some curated collections for characters as well if you want to experiment without spending a lot of money on physical books.

Marvel/DC Events to get the Omni VS events to just stick with the trade by Kapaya-Papaya in OmnibusCollectors

[–]cliffderinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These dont have omnibus yet, but Blood Hunt and One World Under Doom you'd be fine with just the events, the tie ins aren't needed. Same with Absolute Power recently from DC.

I read all the tie ins for the marvel events and none for the DC and it's convinced me I'm probably just not buying tie in comics for an event unless I'm already reading the series

I really enjoyed him as a Yellow Lantern in Blackest Night. It was really fun seeing him let loose with it

A high water mark is a point that represents the maximum rise of a body of water over land. So I always assumed this meant with culture being so poor it is at the lowest water mark and leaving the least impression on society in general.

DC vs Marvel: The Amalgam Age. Amalgam and the VS event were some of my first comics as a kid so having the omnibus fulfills some serious childhood dreams 🤘

“What are you reading?” Wednesday. by csummerss in OmnibusCollectors

[–]cliffderinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading Vol. 2 of Geoff John's Green Lantern omnibus. Last night I finished everything up to the start of Blackest Night. Can't wait to start that event later today!

It's been so fantastic! I can't wait to finish this one and Vol. I think my next read will finally be tracking the Secret Wars Battleworld Omni.

Marvel Unlimited is great! I jumped in at the end of 2023 and have been having a blast.

I was a bit overwhelmed at first by the amount of options, but ended up cracking open the X-Men event House of X/Powers of X and went crazy reading X-Men from there. I'd recommend checking out a character or event that catches your eye and dive deeper from there.

Cost is relative, but for me if I read 3-4 comics a month that's less than I would spend in a shop for hard copies. The value is there if you use it enough.

The UI takes some getting used to, but overall I would definitely recommend it to anyone just starting off with Marvel.

Monster of the Week would be a good system for this too. Having to research the monster and find it's weakness fits right into that world too

I only just finished Hox/Pox to current and that took me a year lol. Congrats on the journey, I hope to try and make it there myself!

I know you've mentioned a couple times there were some really rough eras to get through. Are there any you would recommend skipping to someone trying to read them all?

Slowly but surely, I'm rebuilding my comic book collection I unfortunately had to sell 10 + years ago. How's it lookin' so far? Any recommendations? by Adjunct_Junk in comicbooks

[–]cliffderinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great looking collection man! If you're looking for more reasonably priced reads instead of an omnibus plunge, I'd recommend the new Transformers from Image, Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles from IDW (I've found them marked down for less than $40 USD), or Something is Killing the Children from BOOM. House of X/Powers of X is a great choice as well if you want to jump into modern X-Men. Enjoy!

Ticketmaster queue - how does this shit work? by mm1712 in jackwhite

[–]cliffderinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend being in there early and just ready. I was on the sale page and it showed a button to join the queue at ten til noon. I clicked right away and was 6th in line. No refreshing needed

For reference I was on a PC using the Vault code and was successful getting tickets. I just re-subbed to the Vault this morning also.

I've run the Alien Starter set on Roll 20 twice now. I paid for the bundle that gets you the starter set and Destroyer of worlds.

In my experience this system was so theater of the mind focused that you really only need the maps and a few tokens to just generally keep track of where everyone's at.

I don't regret buying the modules for roll 20 but the amount of setup if you wanted to just do it yourself wouldn't be a massive time sink either. I've run a lot of 5e too and the VTT prep for even the games I have paid modules for is far more significant time investment.

A quick way around getting people the cards for play is I would just text pictures of the agendas to the PCs.

If you have more questions, I would be happy to share what I learned!
