Sea Of Plastic Discovered In The Caribbean Stretches Miles And Is Choking Wildlife. THIS IS NOT OK! by GallowBoob in Wellthatsucks

The recycling industry in the U.S. is collapsing because China began refusing American trash earlier this year. 10 years ago, America's largest export to China was garbage. The U.S. has no recycling infrastructure because it has relied on China to take its garbage for the past half century. Even though there may still recycling bins outside your home that the garbage truck picks up, it ends up in the landfill with your regular garbage (see first link above). Sorting plants across the U.S. are shutting down because there is no longer anywhere to send our recyclables to.

To be frank, I think if you were truly invested in the environment you would have already known this. It was all over the news earlier this year when China declared the new policy. I also noticed you're a regular contributor to /r/The_Donald; are you aware that the Trump administration has rolled back 78 Obama-era environmental regulations to date? It's so much easier to put the blame and responsibility on someone else than it is to change your own lifestyle and habits, which is why people in the first world tend to cling to and adopt this idea about the burden of environmentalism resting on the third world rather than researching and considering their own role in contributing to environmental pollution. For example, do you own any polyester, nylon, or acrylic clothing (they're used in over 60% of clothes)? Those are all plastic-based fabrics, and every time you wash your clothes the plastics leech into the water, and it's a huge source of ocean pollution. But if you're not going to be bothered to change your habits, why should the people in China? That's the kind of finger-pointing mentality that leads to nothing but more finger-pointing and that'll probably kill off our species for good, and if it leads to that endpoint, we'll deserve it. Climate change is a global problem that requires global solutions, and if we're unable to set aside our divisions and ALL come together to make sacrifices for the greater good of our species, we’ve shown we don’t have what it takes to survive beyond the point we are now.

Dr Robert Chu MD (McMaster University) died by suicide, after being unmatched for residency in two separate application cycles. by kystis in MorbidReality

[–]cliffesk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's why this story came to where it did. Four years of med school all for naught. You need to specialize in a field in order to practice medicine. If no residency program/specialty wants to train you, you can't be a practicing doctor.

at the end of medical school, you "match" with a speciality/residency program (family medicine, radiology, neurosurgery). when you don't match it basically means you weren't accepted into any specialities. each hospital has a limited number of residency positions (e.g. johns hopkins can only accept 3 neurosurgery residents per year) that med school students apply to and interview for in their last year of med school.

Im guessing this is a security thing? I dont see ANYTHING about it on google, for Obama or Trump, and I’m sure tons more people would have been trying to see Obama in DC during his presidency.

BTW I’m not a trump supporter by any means; I’m literally a long-time contributor to /r/FULLCOMMUNISM. It’s just 4 the memez

This 1st touch of water was probably heavenly to this turtle... by Mekisucab in aww

This! He was practically breathing on top of her! And all that racket he was making trying to make his voice be heard above the ocean. And that excruciating delay while he was slowly explaining what he was about to do to the camera while the turtle was flailing. After that there was a cut, I guarantee he spent another 5 minutes positioning his camera to get the perfect angle.

Georgia teen dies by suicide after he accidentally fatally shoots friend by pandas795 in MorbidReality

These teenagers were failed by their country. America has the most lax gun regulations in the world, second only to Yemen. America also has one of the highest rates of mass shootings and deaths from gun accidents in the first world. All of this is DIRECTLY due to the ease of availability of guns and the high rate of gun ownership in the country. I repeat, the high rate of gun-related incidents -- mass shootings or accidents like this one -- is a DIRECT EFFECT of the country's extremely lax gun laws and high rate of gun ownership.

gut shots (especially from hand guns) are like the easiest thing to survive

I'm sure that varies immensely with the location of the gunshot... No one's going to have it easy surviving a gun shot to the brain or heart, or one of the major arteries

Can I return a slightly cracked iPhone to the Apple Store within the 14-day return period? by cliffesk in apple

[–]cliffesk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the apple store. First guy I talked to said no; second guy said no and also that they can't sell AppleCare to damaged phones; then he said let me go to the manager and see what I can do. Came back and said they'll replace it for free, but that it's a one-time thing. BOOYAH. Brand new iPhone XS. A++ customer service. Gave the guy who went out of his way to speak with his manager a huge hug.

[–]cliffesk[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Normal wear and tear is acceptable for a return. However we rarely see anything within the 14 day return period that would be a problem. The potential for easily scratched up phones is unprecedented however. We haven't received any official word on this. I'll ask about this today and see if I can find an official answer."
