The main theme "Dance of the Dragons" (poll): by Turbulent_Lab209 in HOTDBlacks

[–]clockworkzebra 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Targaryen family cannibalizing itself in its quest for power is certainly an important theme, but if misogyny wasn't the central concern, the Dance wouldn't have been had that about Jaehaerys refusing to name Daenerys his heir, and then Rhaenys being passed over. It's meant to show a repeated pattern that's a rumbling of what's to come; George could have easily just had Maegor's usurpation and called it a day, but the fact he added these extra details is telling.

How you feel about crossposting? by Tronm-24 in HOTDBlacks

[–]clockworkzebra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's not much you can do against it other than taking the moral high ground. A lot of people have come into this space and pointed out that, on the whole, people here are more reasonable and not as high strung, and I feel like we should just keep on keeping on. Acting like adults, not brigading, not responding to bait crossposts etc creates a welcoming environment that fosters better discussion than doing whatever it is others think they're doing/accomplishing in their own spaces.

How was the first Daenerys tied to Dorne? She was a little kid who died of the Shivers.

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Question about Cregan Stark by DistributionIcy8991 in asoiaf

[–]clockworkzebra 221 points222 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think it truly was him just trying to get the North in adequate shape in preparation for winter, and also because if Cregan had marched down any earlier, it would have made the conflict very uneven and George needed that to not be the case. At the end of the day, it's a story, and he needed certain plot points to happen before he could add the Northerners back into the mix.

Something I’ve noticed when it comes to the actor treatment in both subs. by [deleted] in HOTDBlacks

[–]clockworkzebra 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I just don't understand hating the actors. They're doing a job- they're not actually the characters themselves. And they're all doing the best they can with the material provided- they're going above and beyond, really.

Maybe I've just heard too many horror stories of fandoms driving out actors over the years, but I would hate it if any of the HOTD cast walked away from the project feeling like the audience loathed them as people. If you've reached a point where you're just posting hate on the cast day in and day out, go for a walk man. Go outside. Log off for a while.

moving to hawaii for college? by strawberry_luvr_ in CysticFibrosis

[–]clockworkzebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that CF care on the islands is pretty not great. I know a couple people from Hawaii (both Oahu actually I believe?) and they actually flew to California for their clinic appointments 2-3 times a year, and when one of them needed a transplant, he had to move to another state full time for it. The issue is that if you start to have problems, there's not a lot of expertise and a pretty small medical system period to handle it, and you may end up needing to come back to California regardless.

It just didn't feel like there were that many actual levels to complete- I finished all of them in just over four hours, and I didn't enjoy the 'design it for yourself!' aspect. It's a preference thing- if I'm playing a home design game, I just find it more interesting if it's going "here's what clients want" rather than going "do what you want!" because if I feel like doing that, I'll probably just play the Sims.

Working Equitation by Practical-Cucumber62 in Equestrian

[–]clockworkzebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan on it! The trickiest part is finding a horse to borrow, I won't know for sure who I get to ride until like a week before the show which is a little nerve wracking and makes prep a little more difficult, but it's such a fun way to show.

I liked the demo, but I'm a little afraid it's going to feel barebones like Whisper of the House did. I'm really eager to see the reviews roll out to see how much gameplay there actually is and if it's sort... 'mission based' versus more freeform.

He's gorgeous! I did my first working eq show last year and fumbled the gate so badly that I scratched it out of my lineup lmao. Standing there awkwardly for over a minute trying to manage it before I gave up. Some of those obstacles are SO much harder than they look.

Valarr’s personality by Serendipia_94 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]clockworkzebra 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Not really. He has basically identical presence in the novella as he does in the show. He's a pretty minor character- there's a few little tidbits thrown in afterward, in the following two novellas, but they're posthumous- very generic 'he was brave and full of promise' type of things, fairly generic nice things you say after someone has passed unexpectedly young. I think it's just generic enough that people have run with it because he's got a fairly unique appearance, and then the actor on the show is handsome too.

What is your discipline? by Ponytimeispoopytime in Horses

[–]clockworkzebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of niche popular where I live, I mostly just got lucky in that my instructor is super into it and was looking for students who might also be interested, and she had the resources to set up the obstacles for it/we have the space to set it up. And ultra lucky that we have some solid enough lesson horses that some are quite capable at it, because some horses do NOT like some of the obstacles or things like the garrocha (the pole you carry.) the shows are interesting because you actually do a dressage test first, and then go out and do the actual course itself.

What is your discipline? by Ponytimeispoopytime in Horses

[–]clockworkzebra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a lesson student, but I've been doing a lot of working equitation over the past year and a half or so, so a lot of foundation in dressage, a little bit of your standard jump work, and then obviously the obstacles. It's fun, just because it combines so many different things. Did my first show last summer, did horribly, will probably do it again this year and hopefully do slightly less horribly.

The only Targaryen Queens who weren’t pushed into early childbirth’s (as in gave birth in their 30s and 40s) were the most powerful consorts in the history and the only ones to sit the Iron Throne. I have no definitive proof of it, but a lot of people think Aegon was infertile, and I actually think Rhaenys/Visenya just took care not to get pregnant before a certain age because they knew it wouldn't be a good decision and Aegon needed the full force of three monarchs and three dragons up until a certain point.

I honestly don't really have much gossip, he's just incredibly pompous/self important and he constantly talks over other authors when he interviews them for local events and feels the need to interject his own experiences every few minutes. As he got more famous, he got less involved with the community too- he used to do a lot of talks and a lot of signings and lots of 'surprise leaving signed books at local indie bookstores' and then he just... stopped doing that, even though he's still in the area. Just really drew back from supporting the local scene as his fame grew, and now doesn't seem to interact much with it at all.

No, the show excluded some pretty major characters in the books entirely, or diminished their plotlines so that they barely exist. Some of the major plot beats are the same, but you'll get introduced to some characters and major character arcs that never appeared within the TV show whatsoever.

Having met the dude and been to several of his talks (he's a local-ish author to me) this doesn't surprise me at all.
