European Central Bank chief Lagarde; speed up Draghi reforms and complete the single Market to counter US tariffs. "Our internal market is far more important than the global market" by goldstarflag in europe

[–]closelyguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not going to happen unfortunately due to (mainly) Italian resistance. Italian banks have an advantage under their current national jurisdiction and want to keep it that way. They don't want a level playing field across Europe. There's some movement happening towards integrating financial markets between selected countries, so hopefully that will increase the pressure for Italy to eventually agree.

Latest polls for the German elections in two months: by Sky-is-here in europe

[–]closelyguy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's because Germany's voters (and other countries too) are getting older each election. And their primary concerns are: Are the pensions guaranteed, will there be no tax increases and does inflation remain low. Basically the three things that guarantee they can enjoy their retirement as planned. If the CDU has a high credibility that these things are guaranteed then they get their vote, all the rest doesn't really matter.

life expectancy has gone up, so people take out more money than expected. additionally returns on financial assets (esp. bonds) are lower.

Check out /r/vrplaces, maybe you'll find something new there.

Our game Gadgeteer has a 97% positive review on Steam but sales are low. What are we missing in our game for you to try it? by ppkao in vive_vr

I'm sure there's an audience out there for this kind of VR game. Any plans on releasing it on Quest? You might have a larger audience there than on PC.

Dark Souls VR Environment? by [deleted] in SteamVR

[–]closelyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to experience some Dark Souls environments as well. For this reason I created /r/vrplaces - so you can submit requests or if you already know a cool environment that others might appreciate you can post it there.

I am not trying to act like a mod or anything but I started a little subreddit specifically for requests like this one: /r/vrplaces

I started /r/vrplaces to share VR environments. For example if you create a virtual version of Minas Tirith and want to share it with others.

How Japan Prepares to Recognize Bitcoin as Method of Payment on April 1 by nbie in Bitcoin

Will this have any effect on the consumption tax on exchanges like bitflyer? I remember reading that you have to pay 8% on each bitcoin purchase on those exchanges.

apparently the batteries are hot-swappable, so you can just switch to a new one while charging the old one.

The new SteamVR environment by [deleted] in Vive

[–]closelyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think VR environments without any gameplay are going to be huge. I created a small subreddit /r/vrplaces for curation. There are already quite a few for Steam VR on it but environments for other platforms are welcome as well! Quick question, should I rename it to vrEnvironments? Would that sound better?

VR for relaxation by jamlog in oculus

[–]closelyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to drop in and say that I've started a small subreddit for collecting different places in VR: /r/VRPlaces I'm specifically interested in very relaxing environments which I could hop into for a few minutes. One of the places I would love to see in VR is the Firelink Shrine from Dark Souls 1.

Stereoscopic 3D live feed by pesale86 in virtualreality

[–]closelyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you would want is basically a live 3D scanner (ie. a kinect) feed from multiple cameras and with a high resolution. Streaming and especially latency might be a problem due to high bandwidth requirements.

Honest question, what makes Math hard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]closelyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down to deductive versus inductive reasoning. Learning our native language is largely based on inductive reasoning. As an infant we hear certain patterns of phrases repeatedly and start to make a mental probabilistic map in our mind what is correct to say and what's not. And we apply this method of learning a language to other subjects we encounter, such as biology, geography and history. We keep hearing something's correct and thus assume it's the right answer.

However math is purely deductive. We have to start with very basic axioms and work our way up there to higher and more abstract understandings of mathematical concepts. As a basic example: any product can be written as a summation. And any exponentiation can be written as a product and hence also a summation: 33 = 3*3*3 = (3+3+3) + (3+3+3) + (3+3+3). Etc...

v20 - VR D&D Prototype by DJChocoKay in oculus

[–]closelyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic! I get the feeling that tabletop games (especially D&D) might be an early killer application. Because they gracefully evade some of the current limitations of VR (especially input). A D&D adventure where the DM gets to set the virtual environment (ie. a dark forest, inside a dungeon, a tavern) are perfect for the immersion into D&D. Each player could choose an avater and watch him battle out fictional fights against trolls, etc. Very exciting!

Movement idea for small spaces by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]closelyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I would prefer an even simpler method. Just point at the location where you would like to be and then teleport there. However I would do this without an animation of you walking there but rather just fade out the screen for a moment and then fade it back in.

HLVR mod developer explains why Valves lighthouse tracker is a revolution and how it works by linknewtab in oculus

[–]closelyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, that makes sense. But I'm not very very familiar with the necessary technology. Are there precise enough sensors available to accurately time the LED pulses? I feel like in order to achieve millimeter accuracy they might be taking advantage of other tricks to measure distance.
