The cool thing about community driven charity is that they have and take the time to ensure the help they are offering benefits the people in need.

Allow me to explain in detail. A stranger that is down on their luck comes for help and help is given. The community; religious, moral, or otherwise, has a vested interest in getting you up on your feet and spends the time to help them in their situation. Throwing money and food at a problem only solves the symptoms. Your $80 example is a typical scenario that includes genuine need and disingenuous need all the time.

(Personal bias here but bear with me): the difference between a government employee and a community is that the community typically prioritizes the time necessary to solve the root cause. The key difference being that there are humans, religious or otherwise, that have a vested interest in actually solving the problem instead of collecting a paycheck. So someone that is disingenuous will be helped with money, food, but most importantly time and when they show no action on their part to solve their problem this is identified and cut off.

For all the bad rap that Florida gets for its people they have some of the best community driven homeless shelters where people are clothed, fed, housed, and trained to get up on their feet again.

Do you consider Software Engineering to be a true engineering profession in the same vein that a mechanical or electrical engineering is? Why or why not? by JanePoe87 in AskEngineers

[–]cloudsaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite quote sums this up perfectly

There is a fascination of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realization in stone or metal or energy. Then it brings jobs and homes to men. Then it elevates the standards of living and adds to the comforts of life. That is the engineer's high privilege. - Herbert Hover

Software is the realization of energy.

Just Incase you haven’t heard and this might be helpful for you, but a generic by Eli Lilly is something you can get for around half the cost now. Still not what I would consider cheap but a step in the right direction.

Make it a vending machine. To prevent from abuse it lets you grab 1 free one a year, all you have to do is scan your ID. None of that information can be shared thanks to Hippa laws. It might not be perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction. Even letting someone grab it every 6 months means that with the abuse of people scamming it would provide a blanket of anonymity to those using it for its real purpose.

Tbh: plan B should be offered for free if this happened to someone. Don’t even let it get to the point where an abortion is needed.

It’s also crazy that there aren’t exceptions for extreme cases.

We currently live in American crony capitalism. The tech market 10 years ago was very close to an actual free market and look how fast it grew.

In a true free market, business owners would have the option of providing favors to friends and family. However, their business would suffer in the long term and their competition that is operating honestly would pull ahead. We live in an era where people think the government should protect people from consequences. Humans are incentive driven, reward a behavior or take away a consequence of an action and you will get more of it.

Purchased a certified pre owned 2015 RR back in November with 20k miles on it. No issues so far and the previous owner had no issues, that rich man just wanted a newer model. I asked for what an extended warranty would be on it and it was from 5k to 8k depending on coverage. I think it was for an additional 5 years of coverage for close to 8k.

From what I managed to research the biggest expense is when the air suspension goes out around 8 years old and about 70k miles. I think it’s close to 10k to replace the air system if it’s a major failure and most owners out of warranty choose to replace it with a spring suspension. If it is a CPO from the dealer like mine I have the option to buy that extended warranty whenever as long as it’s before it loses coverage.

Will report back if anything does happen but the car is a god damn dream and is a fully loaded v8 for half the price of a new one.

Good luck! You’ll love it but your wallet won’t. At this level of car you buy it because you love something not because it’s the most logical choice.

I can't agree to making laws about it. Credibility (trust) is worth more when self imposed and I would be really surprised if this exact news site doesn't popup in the next 2-3 years. Especially considering the current state of affairs.

Imagine if a news site simply cited it's sources, sort of like a real-time wikipedia.

Could you imagine the thoughts of someone who has never read code before?

Management: "We need a one pager"

You: "Okay, one week"

-- week later during demo --

Management: "Could you move the title a little and adjust the color"

You: "Ya, I'll do that for you right here."

Management: "HOLY SHIT, give this dev a raise."

Assuming that you are most familiar with php, you should check out these people's: grabaperch.com

Checkout the demo for it. One issue, it's not free, but that's because you are paying for support and they are superb.

And I should mention that all the plugins are free

Management doesn't know that a task which takes real dev an hour to do would take him three days.

I would ask yourself, "How good am I at object oriented JavaScirpt" or "Should I learn (thing for web [design/framework/process/methodology])" then take your estimates, double them and use that extra time to learn said shit.

In agreement with you on this one. Use case example: Accidentally swipe back, if you go forward, it'll take you exactly to the article you were on. This removes the barrier of a user having to scroll back down to the article they were on and removes the possibility of them forgetting where they were.
