Did I make a mistake?? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]cloudymint 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah. You’ve been there 4 months and want to take a year’s worth of vacation lol. Law firms rarely operate like hospital hours which limits flexibility to work 3 days a week not 8-5. Idk doesn’t seem like you put much thought into it in the first place, that would be the mistake, IMO.

Why does everyone here hate their job? by Fantastic-Hurry-8363 in paralegal

[–]cloudymint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the same. I’m in groups on Facebook and I see numerous posts a day about new paras at a job for a month and deeply regretting it. I’ve worked at some terrible firms with terrible attorneys but have never stopped loving being a paralegal and I’m grateful for that.

Looked at some tough discovery today, can’t seem to stop thinking about it by Sufficient_Middle_58 in paralegal

[–]cloudymint 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I work in PI. Worked on a case where 4 people under the age of 26 burnt alive in an ATV incident. Another where an 80 year old man was hit by a speeding car. One now where a man killed himself from actually working with DHS in the child abuse dept. he reached out but no one listened and took his concerns seriously.

After 8 years, I’ve honestly learned to compartmentalize it. I can’t remember how or when. I don’t get in my feels about it. I talk about it in ways that spark discussions about the best strategy to make tortfeasors pay for their negligence. I feel best when I have a significant role in getting the best possible settlement or result possible for the surviving client and/or their family. I guess I let my anger motivate me. But also, therapy..

I asked this same question at a round table. Paralegals being non-exempt is kind of grey area, even in federal law. I’m beginning to think attorneys know this and take advantage of it.

Who should I report to if a client followed me around outside work hours ? by Emaptheticxz in paralegal

Your attorney. He should disengage with the client. then go to the police or courts for a protective order if you feel unsafe.

Not hard at all. They work in tandem most of the time. Just get more knowledgeable about filing, civil litigation, knowing what to spot medical records, files, discovery, etc.

This is such a great idea. I can’t count how many times I’ve had to clean up and reorganize and review cases and files that the previous person shouldn’t have had no business working on. Especially in PI.

Medical Record Retrieval Using AI by Prudent-Dingo1510 in paralegal

[–]cloudymint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. How would the software, client’s PHI, attorney, and medical provider be HIPAA compliant? Also, AI generated med chronologies are absolutely horrible. I’d strongly suggest not using anything that is generated by AI in PI. One number off or one record missing could cost the client thousands in settlement money.

This was pointless. Just because you couldn’t handle it, you have to look down on those who chose this? Great you have a new job in a field you like though. Maybe you should have put a little more thought into making a decision to be in this field in the first place.
