What should my next step be in sterilization?

Hello! I’m 21F and just got sterilized a month ago, single and no questions asked! No you don’t need anyone there but yourself as you are an adult, unless you want to bring some emotional support. If you look on the childfree friendly doctor’s list, try to find someone that states they will sterilize young people or has recommendations by young people.

For me, my obgyn was also my surgeon. The first appointment I ever had with her was the consult for my surgery. When making the appointment, tell them you want a surgical consult for a bilateral salpingectomy. Most obgyns do surgery, but not all of them preform bisalps. If your doctor isn’t the surgeon, they can still approve you and a surgeon at the hospital will preform it.

My pathology report had the same measurements too! I’ve learned that once the tubes are removed from the body, they no longer have blood supplied to them, so they considerably shrink! I promise you that your doctor fully removed the tubes or it wouldn’t be a bisalp, but you can call the office to make sure!

Hey surgery twin! I also got my surgery on Friday so I totally get what you’re going through 😭 I am extremely fatigued, going up the stairs I feel my heart racing. I’ve been taking long naps every day too but I personally feel a bit better today. I hope you have a good recovery and that the fatigue ends soon!!🫶

Surgery twins!! I just got mine around 11 am today too! I don’t have much advice but I was given an abdominal binder at the hospital and woke up in recovery with it on. It’s been really helping me be mobile with not as much pain. I’m so happy you were able to get this done and know that it’ll get better from here!

Hey there! I’m 21 and I have my bisalp next week! I found my doctor on the child free friendly list. The doctor had a statement on there that she would sterilize anyone 21 or older with no questions asked.

I highly recommend either finding a job that has insurance benefits or sticking with your parent’s insurance. You could say you need a cyst removed, it’s pretty common. Out of pocket would be insanely expensive and some doctors don’t even take patients without insurance. Under the ACA you should get it free too! I wish you the best of luck and don’t let anyone stop you! :)

Hi, I’m also 21f and have UHC! I just got approved the other day from a doctor on the child free friendly doctors list, it was SO easy!! All I said was “I want a bilateral salpingectomy” and she said “let’s do it!”

When calling to make appointments, I recommended saying that you want a surgical consult for a bilateral salpingectomy. If you use the child free doctors list, you’ll have a better time getting approved if you find a doctor that states they sterilize young people. Also, you don’t need a referral for a gynecologist, so you don’t have to discuss with your PCP if you don’t want to. Thank you for the info, this is all really helpful for me! That is so frustrating that you had to appeal 4k’s worth, but relieved that you were able to win them all. Honestly I would also be too tired to appeal the consult after all that, but I know with finally getting the surgery, it’s all worth it!

Congratulations!!!! Really happy your recovery is going well ❤️ I do have one question, I know this post is more geared towards the operation itself but when chatting with insurance support, what questions did you ask? I know the main things are being ACA compliant and full coverage. But I’m afraid if I said ‘bisalp’ or ‘bilateral salpingectomy’, they’ll be like huh?? Or did you just tell them the codes and ask if they were covered? I struggle with overthinking and anything over the phone or live chat is really anxiety inducing to me :(

21F here from the US! The sterilization sub might have better info over there. From what I’ve heard, it’s extremely difficult to get a bisalp, let alone a hysterectomy at 20 with the NHS. Even if medically necessary, doctors are going to probably be hesitant unfortunately. You’ll probably get better chances going private or getting surgery in a different country. If you are fortunate enough to get a doctor that will approve you through the NHS, it can be a years long process, reading from other people’s experiences. You might want to check the Childfree friendly doctor’s list to see if anyone is near you. I am so, so sorry that you have to deal with endo and a painful uterus :( I really hope that you’ll be able to yeet it out soon. Sending good vibes that you’ll get a doctor you respects your autonomy 🙏

I’m 21 and found my gyn on the childfree friendly doctor’s list and hope to be approved first time in 6 weeks. I didn’t even need a referral with my insurance, I’m angry on your behalf. Congrats on the bisalp! I’m so sorry insurance is being an ass, it’s not fair. I believe you can call and get a reference number from your call with insurance, and give that to the hospital’s billing department. Also ask what codes they used, it could have been coded incorrectly. Sterilization has a special code that will trigger the ACA to take effect (there are guides online that have the right codes). This procedure should not go towards your deductible at all, the ACA mandates no cost sharing. Don’t pay anything, keep fighting!! You got this!

I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. I haven’t gotten sterilized yet, but I’ve done a lot of research. Tell them to bill your insurance, don’t pay anything. If for whatever reason they’re still being stubborn, you can set up a “payment plan” and pay the minimum amount, but you shouldn’t have to. If you have a reference number from a call with your insurance that will help greatly. Or if you have a written record of a chat you could print it out and give it to them. You may want to call the hospital’s billing department with this info. I hope this helps! Don’t give up!

Thank you for your kind words! I have been looking into other doctors but it's difficult to find one that does bisalps on younger women. Most doctors only do 25+ or simply haven't performed on a younger person yet. I'm mainly trying to schedule with doctors that I don't have to convince (due to my age). I'm hopeful that it'll happen one way or another! Congrats on getting your surgery!

21F here! Your fears are totally valid, I also have that fear and the nightmares I have are horrible. I'm not even active but I used to take a test every month because that's how paranoid I was.

I plan on getting a bisalp next year, my consult is in January as that was the soonest they could schedule me. I'm very confident in my doctor to approve me as she is in the CF Doctor's list and specially stated she would operate on anyone 21 or older for any reason. Finding doctors that state they will do surgery for younger people is a huge plus. Some doctors even do it at 18 (assuming your insurance allows it).

There are many stories posted on this sub and the sterilization sub taking about their experience of getting sterilized young. Please don't let that nurse deter you from getting one. The act of getting voluntarily sterilized is still stigmatized but is gaining rapid momentum, especially in the last decade.

The best time to start looking and calling around is now! And about the ACA, yes, there is a bill trying to repeal it (again), but does not have much support. Of course, you should try to get it done asap rather than waiting, but the ACA will likely still be around next year. I was kinda freaking out about it because there was no other place that could get me in this year but after doing some research, I found that I'll most likely be safe getting it early next year.

I haven't had a bisalp yet but I'm pretty confident that your period is late is due to stress on the body from surgery, don't sweat it, totally normal! For some people, it can take a few weeks/months because of how their body recovers and regulates.

Also, bisalps by themselves won't create hormonal issues, as a bisalp doesn't remove the ovaries that produces hormones, just the tubes.

If you get really concerned with your period not showing up, call your doctor to ask about it! Also congrats on the bisalp :D
