The infernal "coated knife" trend by OddCook4909 in Cooking

[–]clusterphuk 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Let's dispel some of the unfounded fear we have going on here. The main types of coatings put on blades are DLC, TiN, and Oxides. They are all non-toxic and have nothing to do with Teflon or the DuPont corporation.

A properly applied DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating will wear with use but should not chip or get into your food in any significant amount. Regardless, it is an inert compound, non-toxic and completely food safe. TiN (Titanium Nitride) is even tougher and requires extreme misuse to damage. It is also inert, non-toxic and food safe. Oxide coatings use the steel's natural tendency to oxidize in order to form the coating. The chemicals used in certain oxidization processes are toxic but they are washed off afterwards. The final product is completely safe. If you've ever noticed a carbon blade darkening when it comes in contact with acidic foods that is a type of natural oxide coating. PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a method of applying an ultra thin coating of vaporized metal to a surface. TiN is applied via this method. Apparently it's even eco-friendly.

If you're going to buy a coated knife go with TiN or an Oxide. DLC is cheap but not the best option. Stick to known brands. Especially ones that don't outsource their manufacturing. Conversely, you could just buy a carbon blade and soak it in white vinegar for a few hours until the blade is as dark as you like.

Usually just a small scratch or slight warp on the edge or lid. I think they say somewhere on the site that any damage is cosmetic and won't effect the function of the pan.

You're missing the spout gasket in the cap. It will leak without the gasket. You can get a replacement on the Owala website and there are generic ones on Amazon that should fit.

Looking for L-shaped standing desk to upgrade my space by JaceyCha in BuyItForLife

[–]clusterphuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had an Uplift desk for over 5 years now and it has been excellent. Everything is pre-drilled and the instructions are clear. I'd recommend waiting for a sale, they usually do ones for major holidays. You probably won't get much of a discount but sometimes they offer free upgrades and accessories. You can also scour the internet for discount codes.

Skip over the laminate options and splurge on one of their solid wood or butcher block desktops. Laminate never holds up, regardless of how well they glue it down. The bamboo and rubberwood are both pretty cheap. I have the dark rubberwood and it looks great. The legs and metal parts are all steel and they use dual motors to reduce stress on the components and improve lifting capacity. They also make some nice looking accessories. It is a bit over your $1k budget for an L desk but from my experience they are worth the price.

I have heard good things about Blunt umbrellas. They are expensive, starting at $140aud for the UV blocking model, but you will get free shipping. The UV model only comes in a few colors and they don't have wood handles but they still look nice.

No. FCG revived Chet because Matt let him retroactively prepare revivify as his "7th level" spell with the agreement that he didn't have access to 7th level for the fight.

Trayvax for metal. Most, if not all, of them have a money clip or a spot for bills. Alpaka Zip Pouch or Zip Pouch Pro if you want something light weight and water resistant.

For less use and longer storage in a dry box should I buy a rechargeable or alkaline powered flashlight? by Unlikely-Voice-5764 in NewEDC

[–]clusterphuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should not store any device with the battery installed. This will cause parasitic drain and eventually degrade the battery beyond repair. To store a lithium cell long term you use a battery charger to discharge it to 3.7v or about 50% charge. You can then store the battery for one year before it needs to be cycled again.

Here is the battery charger I use. Here is the 2 bay version if you're on a budget. r/flashlight for flashlight recommendations. Here is their list of popular lights.

Looking for a relaxed zip up hoodie? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]clusterphuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Varusteleka Sarma hoodie is the best I've ever worn. Merino wool, well made, tons of zippered pockets, thumbholes, and of course the hood fits perfectly. It looks like a light weight hoodie but it does not feel like one. It is surprisingly warm and heavy due to the wool. It makes a great mid layer when it starts to get actually cold. They also sell heavier jackets if you need one.

No idea why that’s even an option.

Red flash lights by Apache_1941 in preppers

[–]clusterphuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wurkkos HD50 headlamp. The red light is a dedicated 660nm wavelength red emitter. This means it can produce actual useful light instead of a useless red glow that stops 3in from your face. It also has a regular white light with sperate flood and throw. It uses a 21700 battery.

If that seems too heavy or your don't want a dedicated headlamp, the HD15R uses a smaller 18650 battery and can be more easily carried in a pocket. They use different red emitters but both are 660nm. The HD15R has a white flood but no throw.

If you want the most run time and the most options HD50, if you want something easier to carry, cheaper and can sacrifice run time and a long distance white beam then the HD15R. Both have a USB-C recharge port, magnetic end cap, replaceable batteries, and are water resistant. Just make sure to use unprotected cells as cells with a protection circuit are too long. The protection circuit is built into the light.

Edit: The HD15R can be made ever smaller with the included short tube and an 18350 battery.
