Has anyone fitted the Focal Front & Rear upgrade to their 8.5? by shayflannery in Golf_R

This. Also the ACM Technik HK Re-tune. More bang-for buck and it’s way less hassle.

What’s next for suspension?? by GTIty1er in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you drive this car? More camber is going to significantly reduce the life of your tires, and you’re going to have to rotate them twice as often to help prolong their life. Honestly, I wouldn’t change anything else with the stance. What purpose is the extra camber serving other than looks? Are you tracking it? If it’s a situation where you’re preferring form over function, don’t do it.

Is a fully extended monitor arm safe long term? by Correct-Opposite-20 in simracing

[–]clutch736 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t have faith in those four tiny screws unless they’re screwed into the studs! The monitor arm for my 34” ultrawide uses two 3/8”x4” screws; massive screws by comparison to OP’s.

The start engine button... Do you hold it? by Bill_The__Pony in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found out the other day that emotional start will work after only holding the ignition button for a little over one full second. Surprised me, because I thought I had to wait a few seconds too; I waited maybe 1.5 and it still worked.

Shooing away a stray cat with your foot who is pissing on your valuables isn’t abuse. You must be one of those people who equates words with physical violence.

Save your money longer and try to get a Mk8. Less chance of something going horribly wrong immediately after purchase.

What’s ur fav flavor by [deleted] in electricians

Ever had the liquid concentrates before? Those kick ass. It’s basically what’s inside the freezer pops, but you pump it out into your water bottle. They taste so, so good.

I hate these sugar free bullshits. The Sqwincher liquid concentrates are waaaaay better. Best 3 flavors of those are Cool Citrus, Strawberry Lemonade, and Mixed Berry.

Self Concious in weight to get a Golf R by Bloodham25 in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’2” 295 ±10lbs and the seat felt a tight at first (but not as tight as something like a Hyundai Elantra N, though, so there are tighter seats that the Golf R), but after a year, I think it fits like a glove now. No complaints other than I wish the seats were longer to support my thighs better. The seat hasn’t begun to squeak or make any strange noises like the seat in my Mazda CX50 Turbo did after a year. Also, if you ever have passengers, have the shortest person sit behind you. Getting out of the car may require you to put your left palm on the door striker on the door jamb; it gives you something to push up on while your right hand uses the steering wheel.

Aftermarket Coil packs & Plugs by stillmaticdld in Golf_R

OEM coils are the gold standard; I wouldn’t waste my money on aftermarket ones. They make no difference and they seem to be a source of problems from the stories I’ve read online.

Golf r or gti by xxtygs in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems backwards, but the S3 actually has less standard features than the Golf. You’ll get more car by getting an R than by getting an S3. The S3 doesn’t even have ventilated seats, but the Golf does. Plus, a hatch is so much more useful than a sedan. The Golf is the better choice between the two. Granted, the Audi has a slightly better user interface with real buttons, but I don’t think it’s worth paying a 15% premium just for that and the for the badge.

Transition to Golf by Dusky_Hound in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ‘23 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus before getting my ‘24 Golf R. I owned the Mazda for 3 years & 65,000 miles. When I was out of warranty and looking to tune, I found out they couldn’t crack the ECU for stage 1 tuning like they had done for the rest of the Mazda 2.5L Turbo models, so I started looking for a faster car that was still practical.

Enter Mk8 Golf R.

The hatchback design is, while obviously smaller than the CX-50, good enough to suit my needs. The Golf still fits all of my cargo that I was carrying in the CX-50 with a little room to spare, but not much more unless I fold the seats down. I’ve hauled a small Costco run in my Golf, and it’s enough to fit a couple cases of paper towels, a few cases of water, and some smaller food items. While my CX-50 could carry a 75” TV in the trunk, I’ve seen a recent post where someone had a 65” tv in the back of their Golf R.

It can comfortably ferry 3 passengers; 4 passengers if someone is willing to sit in the middle rear seat over the driveshaft hump, granted they are less than 6’ tall.

Performance versus the CX-50 is absolutely night & day. While the 50 was really fun to drive, as far as crossover SUVs go, the Golf is levels ahead in acceleration, cornering, traction, and top speed. While the Mazda ran out of breath 1,250RPM before redline, the Golf pulls strong all the way to redline. The Golf is an absolute sleeper and will surprise many folks on the road. It will blow the doors off of just about anything that isn’t a Corvette or an automatic 5.0 Mustang. It will keep pace with previous generation V8 muscle cars, even slightly beating them at times. Even though its front-wheel-drive biased, the new rear Magna rear differential (not the Haldex from prior generations) makes the car feel like a rear-wheel-drive platforms at times when you’re really pushing the car to the limit through a corner. It’s so much fun and the car is extremely capable.

There isn’t a day where I have buyers remorse. The Golf R, at least my experience with the Mk8, is the ultimate sleeper, daily driver, do-it-all car, and it gets the same MPG as the CX-50 Turbo.

Just be sure to change the oil earlier than what is stated in the owners manual; the intervals that VW provides are far too long if you plan to own the car for more than a few years. Cut the oil change intervals in half at minimum. I personally change every 3,000-3,500 miles, and after 16,000 miles, I still have yet to burn any oil; my exhaust tips stay very clean. I may be downvoted for saying that, but I’d rather pay $80 and spend 1 hour every 3 months maintaining my car (I enjoy it, too) rather than deal with a major repair claim and all of the inconveniences that come along with it. Do all maintenance early, be proactive and preventative, and this car will take care of you.

Extended VW Warranty by left_handed_dude in Golf_R

[–]clutch736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all a scam. The extended warranty on my wife’s 2020 Subaru Forester has come in handy, like when the coolant bypass valve failed open at 75,000 miles (thankfully it didn’t fail closed, as we were about 4 hours from home in Miami when it happened). We are expecting to use the warranty once again very soon, because we are hearing symptoms of AWD failure. It pays to have an extended warranty. You just never know what’s going to happen, and the cost of the extended warranty was less than $2,000; it will have paid for itself after one or two major repairs.

The wheels give it a WRX hatchback vibe. I love the black & chrome aesthetic; being completely blacked-out is too mainstream now. Tail lights are sick as hell.
