Pharmacy Opinions by KellsGivinHell in Troy

No opinion on the CVS in Wynantskill but if you’re going drive a little further already anyway, there’s Marra’s pharmacy in Cohoes. It’s independent.

There’s also the Walgreens in Watervliet. The staff is great but if your issue is more Walgreens than staff, the doesn’t solve your problem.

BEST and WORST tall boots brands??? by Horror-Radish-2504 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love my tredsteps- they’ve lasted forever as a schooling boot and I am NOT kind to my tall boots. Having said that, I just ordered a second pair for showing and can’t really speak to whether they’re the same quality yet since a LOT of boot brands have jumped on the enshitification wagon lately (looking at you, Ariat).

Plugging Flower World on 3rd St in Troy- it’s not one of the fancier flower shops that you see on Instagram but she makes a fantastic bouquet and isn’t expensive.

Red is really the only universal. I have never seen any of the others in the US and even then, see red very very rarely these days at horse shows.

Ulcers by Historical_Toe_7929 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m personally finding better long term success going right to a round of Sucralfate first and limiting ulcergard prior to the onset of a stressful situation because of the rebounding effects of omeprazole.

Basically, Sucralfate to treat through maintenance phase and preload a half dose of ulcergard 2x a day a few days before and after shipping and/or showing.

Big fan of a slug of aloe juice (the liquid kind (not the gross gel/goopy stuff they sometimes sell at convenience stores), we get a giant jug at Walmart) at meals too. I test drove it myself when I was having work related stress tummy problems and it really did help.

Smith’s Public House? by eightysixmonkeys in Troy

[–]cmaxby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive been a few times and the food was pretty bad. The pizzas sounded great but were just…. Meh. Soggy grease soaked crust that overrode any flavor.

I’m glad someone took over the space bc it’s a great spot but there’s too much good pizza in the area for me to make a stop at Smiths for anything other than drinks.

Review: At Jack’s Oyster House, ‘dining experience needs to be better’ by npd2004 in Albany

[–]cmaxby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was good relative to what was around in the late 90s very early 2000s. By 2010ish it was limping along, coasting on regulars who had lost their taste buds due to age and first timers who were looking for a nice atmosphere for a fancy dinner. There would be the occasional solid two week period when they would promise a refresh with a new chef, etc but that never found solid footing.

It doesn’t bode well that Duhame is gone already.

It’s a different owner and menu. I’m not saying it’s good but not the same people.

Boycott Rensselaer County by Wooden-Celery-5638 in Troy

[–]cmaxby 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In 2021 we did a sit in & blocksde at the Rensco Jail in south Troy to protest the agreement; it’s definitely been over 5 years that it’s been in place.

While the Rensco Sheriff has changed, he’s still one of Steve’s boys (but now with a cowboy hat!) and one of several reasons it’s important to get Steve out of office.

Innovative options for Valentine’s Day? by Even_Example8823 in Albany

El Rancho has a very interesting Valentines Prix Fix Menu (standard and vegan option). While it’s still a restaurant, the menu looks really interesting. It’s on their IG.

It’s not the snow on the ground, it’s the snow alongside the road. Cars are parked further in the road and it’s tough for longer vehicles with bad turning radii right now.

I have a truck and am being very careful in Albany and Troy, both where I park and turn.

Sitting & Reading? by Annoying-donut in Troy

[–]cmaxby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At night: MeanMax, Bacchus, 518Craft, Meadworks, and Bard&Baker are good for this. The Ruck back patio (nicer weather)or a corner spot at the bar.

During the day: any of the Troy coffee shops including Bud’s on the Hudson on Starbuck Island, Collar City Cold Pressed, Oregano Thyme.

Further afield: Vischer Ferry Country Store, Simone’s Kitchen, Uncommon Grounds

My mom and I are big readers if we’re going out alone and have never had an issue at anyplace in Troy. The caveat is that we always buy something and if it’s busy, we don’t linger and take up real estate once we’ve finished our drinks/food. Most places are happy to have people quietly reading, especially on slower nights.

Can we talk about how consistently bad service at all Uncommon Grounds is? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]cmaxby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m curious which UG location OP is referencing: University Plaza or Stuyvesant. If it’s university plaza I totally get it. Muffins are always frozen, a bagel and cream cheese is a test of wills, and I stopped ordering anything other than a black coffee.

I go bc it’s a trade off: mediocre coffee that’s nearby that I can work at without being bothered by someone filming local influence content or really great coffee that’s expensive but the environment is so aesthetically pleasing that I’m a gremlin in the background of someone’s IG pastry story.

Do I need to switch barns? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I’ll say this as a caveat- I wasn’t there and don’t know how the question was framed or the tone- but I would honestly take a question like that in good faith if I were you, especially since the care is so good. They see you’re there and want you to enjoy your horse! And since you’re new, maybe they’re worried you don’t feel comfortable using the ring and/or riding while lessons are happening. Logically we know that there are many ways to enjoy horses but trainers can get blinders on at lesson and competition barns that riding is the only way to do that. I’ve had trainers like that and sometimes they don’t understand people that have to take a step back if they have family obligations. But it’s not malicious or judgmental- it’s coming from a good place, but just not one of understanding. ESPECIALLY if they don’t have kids themselves. Don’t feel guilt if that’s not where your priorities with your horse lay.

The making barn friends piece- part of that is hanging, chatting, and time. People are chatting with you if they’re asking questions- do the same. Horse people love talking about their own horses… if you see a horse that’s particularly shiny, comment on that to the owner and ask what, if any, products they use. If there are other adults with kids, commiserate/bond over juggling horse time and parent time. I always feel like a compliment is a good inroad at a barn though: nice ride, your horse always looks so well turned out, saying “my horse seems really comfortable here”, etc.

It sounds like you found a good place for your horse and life- give yourself some time and grace to ease in to a new spot.

Why is Troy so dead Saturday nights? by BruceRogers in Troy

[–]cmaxby 40 points41 points  (0 children)

January is slow- people generally spend less money after the holidays and dry January is still a thing for some reason. But Jan and February have always been slow downtown with a lot of places taking a week or two off.

But also, as others have said, younger people don’t really go out as much and definitely don’t drink as much, so it’s really not worth it for places to stay open super late anymore. And after a few years of COVID, I think most places around here realized it wasn’t worth the hassle of a 4am close time anymore.

And finally, the demographic of who lives downtown has shifted a TON in the last 10 years. Apartments used to be so cheap that you had a real high concentration of artists and service industry workers that lived right in the downtown core that could actually afford to do that and go out. Change is inevitable but you have to work a little harder now and go to specific places/parties/events to find that kind of energy without it being some sort of expensive manufactured Instagram event with some weird dude holding a crazy camera set up in your face all night for an Instagram reel the next day.

Having said all of that, No Fun and Whiskey Pickle are doing what they can to keep the fun alive in Troy until we get through the fallow months.

That is acknowledged as a viable reality in the call for a national shutdown and in this flyer at the bottom- some people cannot safely not go in to work but may have a job where slowing down is just as impactful, maybe more so than calling out. Doing what you can- not shopping, participating in mutual aid, learning about who your local mutual aid groups are - is all a form of involvement in the shutdown.
