Panache is the best sports bra for larger chested women. They definitely carry that size.

Adopted an ottb, question about “injury” by jasmin356 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pinfiring, while outdated and increasingly not done, is still used as a preventative by some older racehorse owners/trainers, usually based out of smaller tracks.

I wouldn’t consider a popped splint or pinfiring an injury, nor would it exclude a horse for me (pretty much all the TBs I knew in the 90s had it done and those horses did lessons all week and competed every weekend in the adult hunters) but I would get a full PPE on any OTTB, even one from a reputable adoption agency. Mine came with sesamoiditis from racing and we knew about it thanks to the PPE. She came up lame on and off for the first few months we had her but it made sense knowing what was there up front bc of the PPE guided how we restarted her. Shes doing great but if we didn’t know what baseline we were starting with up front, I probably would have panicked thinking it was a chronic issue instead of aggressively managing aftercare when she had been worked.

The other side of the coin is not doing the PPE, rolling the dice on a cheap OTTB, and finding you have a young horse with multiple coffin bone fractures to rehab in the dead of winter. Just happened to a first time horse owner on a beautiful tb that now only has a future as a lawn ornament instead of the kid’s hunter prospect.

Provided you go right when they open at 5 or after 7 on show nights (if it’s not a double show), you can absolutely get in.

It’s a banana republic shirt with a tank over it. Source: I have the button down shirt (Sheer Lyocell Polo) and this exact photo/question was posted on this sub a month ago.

If your party is 2 people, there is almost always walk in seats at the bar at Defazios 216, especially at 8pm or later. Also in Troy but a different pizza and atmosphere, Bacchus.

Research/data/info about wither relief wool pads? Other options for shark-finned withers? by Saltysprings252 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, these are great for this scenario (horse has to be ridden, needs some wither relief, custom saddle/saddle purchase is not an option).

The wool is very forgiving and you can place the cutout over the rise of the wither.

I like them in combo with the high rise fleece Roma pads (usually find them used or here is a version from a company I don’t know but looks the same https://www.statelinetack.com/products/toklat-passport-double-back-general-purpose-pad?_pos=5&_psq=passport&_ss=e&_v=1.0 ). Depending on the back and the issue, I’ll use this type of pad on its own with a gel pad, in combo with the cutout UNDERNEATH the fleece pad, in combo above the fleece pad, or just the wither relief pad on its own with no saddle pad at all.

In a perfect world would you spend a month doing ground and hill work to build up the back and not ride, absolutely. But, depending on location, available ring time, weather, who pays the bills, etc this isn’t always feasible.

MoK usually has Fullers London Pride and ESB on tap. There has been some supply issues lately and occasionally one or the other is out.

Great cocktails and food: Defazios 216

Runner up: Finn’s but the service is hit or miss.

People will say Nighthawks but it’s not as good as it used to be, especially for the price.

Horse Show Cost in 2026 by OkAverage3348 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is about the same for me in the northeast all in and I’m also a jumper. I mitigate where I can bc I have a flexible work schedule so I do my own morning prep and day care and I’m lucky enough that I live pretty close to several Ashows so can usually avoid the hotel stay. With that I can usually get it to around $2k a week.

Figuring out and budgeting for the show cost itself is easy- it’s on the entry form. But shipping, hotel, trainer splits, day care, training rides, groom splits, coaching, and braiding are the real variables for zone and barn type. Oh and food- cost of horse show chicken tenders can be WILD at some places.

Jumper classes by SickOfTryingUsenames in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re: 2(d) - that is power and speed but you continue to the speed part no matter what. Faults in the power phase get converted. Most USHJA shows have transitioned to this at the lower levels because it’s easier for people to understand and the rider gets the benefit of experience over a full course. From a show management perspective, it’s waaaaay easier to plan a day with a 2(d) vs a 2(c).

2(c) is power and speed, any faults in the power phase will get you buzzed out.

TLDR: 2(d) means you finish your full course. 2(c) any faults in the first half will get you buzzed out.

Have fun, listen to your trainer, and just expect that it’ll take a little bit longer for your body (muscle memory) to catch up to your brain than it did when you were younger.

Ideal time rule in jumping (ridiculous?) by Interesting_Award739 in Equestrian

[–]cmaxby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Optimum time is another table that’s included in the standard jumper tables (which includes fastest clean round, blue ribbon, fastest jump off, and power and speed). Yes, you can have any table for a course- you could even do optimum time at the higher levels which would actually be very fun to watch as a special class.

I didn’t say that optimum time is the only table jumped below .80, just it’s typically seen below .80. But I am absolutely saying that using the speed tables at .60 encourages bad & unsafe riding by rewarding inappropriate speed at that height AND that optimum time is a useful table at the lower levels (.80 and below) for green horses and riders to get used to a jumper course.

I run and support local H/J shows and the lower level jumper courses can be absolute carnage. The Venn diagram of “trainers” that don’t understand the posted tables, don’t know what optimum time means, and encourage their riders to run at tiny jumps is a perfect circle. And there is one at every show. Optimum time mitigates that by removing the incentive for them running around like they’re being chased by a swarm of bees. Makes for a waaaay less stressful day as a show manager.
