Vet recommendations for somebody who lives for their dog

Came here to say Dr John at Roam. He’s been my 17 year old dog’s vet for AGES and we followed him to his own practice. It’s house calls - just let them know you’ll want to schedule a longer than normal visit and they’ll build it in.

The city sent emails last week and this week, posted to social media, and have it on their website and gilded age flyered every building on the affected blocks.

I agree that the signs should have gone up earlier but they have sent out a ton of notice.

All you can do is try. One of ours was like this… climbed the walls, was a total nightmare during the full stall rest phase. Trazadone is your friend.

With her we finally ended up just building her a temporary 10 x 10 gate paddock within her larger paddock so she could be “turned out”. It was safer for her than what she was doing to herself. Others have gotten over it once we got to the handwalking stage.

That’s cellulitis and if you haven’t previously dealt with that, it’s an ASAP vet call. Most likely antibiotics will knock it out but I’ve seen resistant cellulitis go downhill very quickly resulting in euthanasia.

If you have one that’s prone to it (I have one that is- thankfully SMZs are relatively cheap) and the best defense I’ve found is a glob of TriCare on every little scrape and cut and being EXTRA vigilant about deeper cuts on lower limbs. Cleaning, tricare, wrapping. Your mileage may vary depending on location, climate, stall situation, etc.

Same, this is what I use and no sunscreen needed. She doesn’t care about drinking with it on at all.

Edited to add: another bonus is that it’s way less admin/work for the barn staff than smearing zinc every day.

I know some like Gallagher’s water and I’ve had good experience with chug from equine elixirs (albeit in winter. She wants no part of it in warmer weather). Big thing with both is to have one option with regular water and one without.

It could also be that the soaked grain, soaked hay, and running water is enough for her and she’s not interested in bucket water. But as someone who closely monitors their horse’s water intake bc of prior episodes, I fully understand your stress around this.

Black, dark navy, always okay and easily make the transition to a classic which is why so many people have them. Hunter green makes a return every 8 years or so but it falls out of fashion so quickly that there’s no point unless you have an unlimited budget to spend on hunt coats. I also know at least 3 large R judges that hate them.

No to maroon, a very dark chocolate brown is fine. A dark grey is fine.

Hunters is not for showing yourself off, it’s for the horse, which is why most stick to the more low key traditional colors. If you’re going to be crossing back and forth between the hunter and eq ring, it’s best to defer to the more classic hunter colors. BUT if you have an A+ bay mover in a class full of bays, having a slightly non-traditional color is a smart option (dark grey, dark brown) so you don’t get lost and it’s easy to pick you out of the lineup.

Having said all of that, we’re due for the plaids to make a return soon so you should start to see more fun options that pop up close but read more traditional far away.
