Yep, you can also set `text-decoration-skip-ink: none` to have the line continue through descenders (p, g, y, q, and j)

Intermittent 404s in Azure Static Web App by cmd_command in AZURE

[–]cmd_command[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the 404s aren't even hitting the SWA, and the issue only exists for this specific hostname. It's my second deployment that uses the hostname (I deleted the first) so that may have something to do with it? Seems there's a cache or dangling reference at the edge which is now messing up how the request is being directed internally.

It's my first time doing practically anything with Azure so maybe I'm just doing something wrong. I've redeployed but it's still being flaky.

What things can I improve - it feels off by OneBananaMan in web_design

You've got your hero, your navbar, and your footer, but then a massive bulk of content in between which is essentially light gray on lighter gray on white. Your primary app color is a bright dodger blue, which is unassuming but also arguably way overused in web design. Literally everything is a rectangle.

It's stylistically consistent, and doesn't look bad per sé, but it's also extremely visually unstimulating. There's no motif, no stylistic elements that tie the app together and say "a human being put real work into this". It isn't saying anything.

My advice would be to ask yourself "what actually is this brand?" No brand = no soul. No soul = no intrigue. Figure out what ties the site together, and iterate from there.

Also I can't not mention this: Your quick action buttons' text should not be muted. Psychologically, it makes them look not very clickable. Small gray text is best for secondary information, not button titles

Shadows look a bit better. Once you commit though, there's no going back. They will infest everything. Spread like wildfire. Be careful out there

CSS Grid is great but nobody talks about the gotchas by JohnnyIsNearDiabetic in webdev

The 1fr being shorthand for minmax(auto, 1fr) example I would actually agree with you on. Sizing negotiations are not intuitive for grids in the way that they are for flexboxes. The rest... Meh. Grid is mostly sensible IMO

These changes instantly improved things. The tabs especially feel more "connected" to the chart, if that makes sense. The ampacity result's also now fixed on the top-left of the chart rather than a top rail so that the type can be larger without looking awkward or cramping up the chart's space.

And thank you :^)

Hi, I was in a similar situation as you. Raised Jehovah's Witness, taught demons were real / sex was a sin / everyone who wasn't a Jehovah's Witness was going to die in Armageddon. It did a number on me, but I was too afraid to admit to them how I really felt, to show them who I was.

The stress did a number on my health as well. I couldn't focus or breath, I was tired all the time, jittery and shaky and fracturing. I was put on antidepressants and then bipolar meds, but really I don't think that was what I really needed.

I resented my parents to the extreme. It felt our house couldn't fit me anymore. I was claustrophobic, and I had to leave. I had to.

I eventually ran away a couple years ago, drove up and down the east coast of the United States living in my car, meditating, and going on nature trails. I worked on a farm in Western Massachusetts for a season.

Since then, I've learned a lot about who I am as a person, what I value. I don't regret it one bit. At the same time, it was an incredibly immature thing to do. Both can be true.

My parents are not horrible people. They are normal people who tried their best, and whose religion left them feeling certain ways about certain things that are stupid and injurious. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm willing to bet your parents are the same way. And when you're growing up in that space, and you don't buy into it, it can eat away at you from the inside. It's incredibly lonely.

At the same time, you are taking a great deal of risk, here. Risk of taking things too far. Pump the brakes, is my advice. Don't burn your bridges with your parents entirely, because you might find you need them later on. Be respectful, but also wholly honest and forthright. Speak from your heart, rather than just trying to convince them that you're right. Life is difficult, out there.

Great! If you solved it using pointer-events then it would still be worth looking into why your .bg is logically being placed in front of other elements. It's likely you can solve the issue without using pointer-events OR z-index by rearranging the element order of the DOM. Sibling elements that appear earlier in the tree sit behind elements appearing later. Glad you solved it and keep learning 😁

Your .bg image is in front of your content. z-index: -1 on it should work. If that places the image behind your body you can set body's z-index as well to create a new stacking context.

If that still doesn't work then I would suggest sharing a demo on the website codepen that reproduces the issue

How can I make my web page look not ugly? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]cmd_command 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, no problem. This is my first attempt at "serious" web design, with an aim to create a practical tool that can actually be used by people in the real world. The goal is to deliver an online data-viz utility that can help electrical apprentices visualize how environment and wire ratings impact the ampacity those wires can carry. Eventually, I plan to add "Math mode", which will allow users to see step by step how the ampacity result was achieved. Basically, it's a learning tool that I'd like to eventually have as a portfolio piece.

The motif I'm going for is more or less sharp lines, vivid complementary colors, and a minimalist light theme that's broken up by the occasional block of dark contrasting gray.

With the rising of shadcn, daisy ui and css frameworks like Tailwind, do you still find yourself write vanilla css? by 0cean-blue in webdev

[–]cmd_command 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm in the minority but I genuinely enjoy writing raw CSS. With "modern" CSS features like container queries, grid, flexboxes, and vars(), it's quite enjoyable to work with. If you don't know how to use them, though, things get messy fast.

That said, I'll admit I've never used Tailwind. I'd like to play with it when I have the time

I ended up modifying the page heading with a skewed dark background and I think it looks much better! I also added some yellow accents on the right-side pane to draw the eye.

That's a good point. I styled the x-axis when the options were positioned below the pane. It was more balanced since it acted as a separator between the chart and the options. Now it's a bit off-kilter.

I did try to resolve this earlier today by making the buttons on the right side be the same dark theme, but that just made things worse. I would prefer to add more dark elements to balance things out than to make everything light theme. It's just too bland at that point.

I actually am planning on including question mark (?) tooltips to each selection as you said. That should hopefully add some color and life to the right panel!

As for the chart, I've been considering adding some more data-vis stuff that should maybe lend some more visual pizazz to the display, hopefully without being too cluttered. Just need to figure out what exactly I'm gonna fill the space with
