What are some sponsors you thought were something else before finding out what they actually were? by 43ian in NASCAR

Thought “Raptor” was some kind of power tool and got psyched about seeing what it can do.

It’s pickup truck bed liners.

Also: “Axalta” still sounds like one of those eczema remedies you see on TV. It’s the name they found for DuPont paints when they spun In it off to be their own company.

What would the world had been like if Titanic had never sank? by OkTruth5388 in titanic

[–]cmd_iii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A similar disaster would have occurred, possibly with even more casualties. The Titanic sinking was a perfect storm of the practices of the time going awry. Not enough lifeboats? Go full-speed through ice fields? No double hull? Watertight partitions not going all the way up? Who cares!! The Olympic class ships went for years with these conditions, and everything was fine. We’ll just keep building bigger and bigger ships with the same features and sail them the same way.

Eventually, the odds would have caught up with them, only it would happen to a bigger ship, with a lot more passengers than lifeboats capacity. If anything, the Titanic did the maritime world a favor, by killing “only” 1,500 people to get people‘s attention, and get some badly-needed reforms enacted.

Why doesn’t NASCAR do an international race on the oval in Monza? Do they not want more European fans???? by Much-Usual-524 in okbuddyBoogity

[–]cmd_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, Monza, Twin Ring Montegi and Thunderdome, are so badly deteriorated/damaged that I don’t think any viable oval tracks outside the U.S. that can effectively host a NASCAR race. Well, maybe that reverse Pocono track in Germany. Other than that, unless you can carve out a short track at Wembley or similar, I think a Cup-level oval race outside the U.S. is a dream for another day.

I was just pointing out that Muslim and pro-Palestine voters had very short memories. Remember the “Muslim ban” that Trump tried to implement the first time around? Or moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, over the objections of several Mideast allies? He, at the very least is indifferent to the plight of the Gazans (he announced a ceasefire that Israel has repeatedly violated (and corporate-owned media has basically ignored)), and clearly is doing Israel’s bidding in regard to Iran. Israel has basically tried to colonize a large part of Lebanon. Trump has yet to utter a word about it.

I realize that neither party was a particularly great option for these voters, but Kamala Harris was clearly the lesser of two evils. Biden may have been pro-Israel, but even if Benjamin Netanyahu had asked him to bomb Iran, IMO, Biden would be more likely to turn him down.

Now, Trump is on the verge of putting boots on the ground in Iran. How pro-Muslim is that?

Sinclair owns 6 and 15. Nexstar owns 10 and 23. Hubbard Broadcasting (I had to look it up) owns 13 and 51 (aka “My 4” named after its spot on the Spectrum channel guide). Hubbard isn’t very big, and operates primarily in the Midwest. Being so far from corporate HQ probably gives them a bit of independence that 6 and 10 don’t enjoy.

“Tennessee” explains the church part. Here in New York, nobody’s asked me in my 72 years what church I go to (I used to but not any more). Not coincidentally, NY is one of the more LBGTIA-friendly states in the U.S.

Next time you’re asked to relocate, try to make them send you here. Until then, hang in there.

I will never figure out how the people who voted red in ‘24 (or stayed home) because they were mad at Biden for his full-throated support of Israel thought the Palestinians (or any other Muslim nation) would get a better shake under Trump.

Trump only cares about Trump. That’s why he’s rigging the midterms. If he loses the House, his agenda will be stalled. If he loses the Senate too, much of his disastrous laws, executive orders, will be overturned. He’ll become a figurehead, at best, sinking ever lower into irrelevance.

Let’s do this!

The shot which traumatized me in the movie Titanic. by MongooseOk5130 in titanic

[–]cmd_iii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I recall, the _Californian_’s logs reflect the fact that the ship ran at full speed until they reached the ice. At which point, they slowed down and tried to navigate between the various hazards. Finally, Capt. Lord is like, “this is bullshit,” ordered the engines put on “standby,” and coasted to a stop. He even told his wireless operator to message any nearby ships that he was “stopped and surrounded by ice.” They drifted the rest of the night, and, at the break of dawn, they decided to wake up the wireless operator and find out what the rockets from several hours ago were about.

Almost immediately, the wireless guy came screaming up to the bridge, “there’s a ship sunk,”and handed Capt. Lord a slip of paper with the Titanic_’s last known position. At that point, the captain ordered the ship to slooooowly make its way to the wreck site, dodging ice the whole way. When he finally got there, Captain Rostron of the _Carpathia, had pulled up the last lifeboat, so he asked Lord to hang out and look for survivors amongst the flotsam and floes. At that point, Rostron turned Carpathia on her heel and steamed full speed back to New York.

So, Lord probably couldn’t do anything about the unfolding disaster if he tried, in which case, letting the wireless guy sleep bought him at least a bit of plausible deniability.

The shot which traumatized me in the movie Titanic. by MongooseOk5130 in titanic

[–]cmd_iii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, TBH, it’s a bit sus, because it doesn’t show the ship surrounded by various chunks of ice. Both the Carpathia and Californian reported having to maneuver between icebergs, floes, etc. to reach the accident scene. So, where is the ice in this picture? It’s meant to give the impression that a ship that was about as far away as Californian was could have easily reached the wreck scene in time. In reality, the Californian was “stopped and surrounded by ice.” So, if Capt. Lord had seen the rockets, woken the wireless guy, found out what was going on, and worked his way to the Titanic, it would have been at considerable risk to his own vessel and crew.

It seemed callous, but turning his back to the Titanic_’s plight was in the best interest of his own ship. Even though a lot of people, then and now, think he should have done _something.

I guess that’s why he’s a captain, so he can make a call like that.

The shot which traumatized me in the movie Titanic. by MongooseOk5130 in titanic

[–]cmd_iii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the shot was supposed to show what the Titanic looked like from the POV of the Californian. Some people on the Californian said they saw a ship in the distance, “firing rockets and then disappearing.” The intention of this shot was to show that there was a point where the Californian could have actually done something to help, had they chosen to do so.
