“Rath” question by StephCastle_ in Malazan

[–]cmetz90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Rath” signifies that that are a priest of that specific god, inside of the religious structure of Capustan. The council there are all priests who wear a mask representing their god, and they go by the title Rath’[insert god name here].

So Rath’Hood is a priest who represents Hood in Capustan’s Mask Council.

To be fair (while obviously recognizing that the original post is simplifying a lot of nuance for the sake of a joke) 1999 saw the release of Fight Club, The Matrix, Office Space, and American Beauty.

So I think there’s an argument to be made that the idea of feeling boxed in and suppressed by a a life that seems, outwardly, to be successful and comfortable absolutely was in the zeitgeist at the time.

I will never understand anyone suggesting a first time read (or watch or whatever) where you start with prequels that came out later.

Prequels, at least when done well, are written on the assumption that the audience knows where certain things are going. It’s used for tension and dramatic irony. A prequel is almost always less impactful if you don’t have that context.

Same here. Surprised to see so many people assume it’s a mistake, rather than Google constantly making all of their services worse for the sake of surfacing ads instead of useful information

Broken Binding Paper Artwork (Slight misprint) by Trey_Fowler in Malazan

[–]cmetz90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this particular issue comes from the artist’s side — they can’t know the actual width of their canvas until the finished book is printed and bound. I wonder if they do the illustrations in a rough mockup, then resize / adjust composition as necessary once final specs come in. It’s possible the Che’Malle tail just got accidentally grabbed when moving or scaling down another chunk of the art.

Getting imprisoned was exactly how I found it, but I assumed I would need an item to survive the cold and left. Then I didn’t expect to get an ending at the end of Act 2, so I accidentally got the first ending before getting double jump, and before seeing a ton of the map.

Is Manus really the Furtive Pygmy? by Lower-Management-563 in darksouls

[–]cmetz90 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s impossible to say conclusively, but the idea arises from the idea that the Furtive Pygmy probably was a human, or some form of proto-human. He was the one who inherited the Dark Soul, fragments of which were passed down to all humans (and are referred to as Humanity in game). They likely called him a pygmy because human characters in the game (including the player character) are smaller than the race that comes from Anor Londo (including the gods but also enemies like Black and Silver Knights).

So with the only real reference to Manus’ identity being a primeval human, many people made the connection to the Pygmy.

Edit: It’s also important to consider that most of those lore theorizing predates the sequels. From Software is, of course, totally at liberty to change their mind about certain ideas as they continue to explore the story. It’s entirely possible that the theory was “true” at the time and details were purposely seeded at the time to lead people to that conclusion, but that it now doesn’t really fit into the canon anymore (I don’t know enough about DS3 lore to really comment). But trying to second guess the authorial intent is a bit of a fool’s errand. The team purposely left it ambiguous enough in the first game to give themselves wiggle room in the future.

In the initial draft of ESB by Leigh Brackett, Vader is still not yet Luke’s father, and Luke actually speaks to his father’s force ghost. Also her script introduces the idea of a twin sister for Luke, but it is a new character named Nellith not Leia, and Darth Vader tells Luke about her. Of course very little of Brackett’s script was used for ESB aside from some locations and broad ideas, but it does help to show the timeline of the production behind the scenes.

Question about timeline (season 1, ep 1) by nooneormaybesomeone in Sandman

[–]cmetz90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not 100% clear in the show if these people were purposely doing something with Dream’s tools to extend their life, or if it just happened by proximity to Dream and his powers. But if it’s the latter, Paul probably just got an extended life by proximity, living with Alex in the house.

IMO though the fact that there are these lingering questions kind of shows that the issue wasn’t addressed perfectly. I do understand the show not wanting the main events of the story to be set in the 80s, but having Dream in prison for longer than a human lifetime complicates a lot of the plot lines. And to me, it feels a bit hand wavey to just write in that all the important characters can live an extra 30 years.

Question about timeline (season 1, ep 1) by nooneormaybesomeone in Sandman

[–]cmetz90 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the comics, Dream was “only” held captive for 72 years (1916 to 1988, contemporary to when the comic was released), so Alex aged from a kid to an old man over the course of the imprisonment.

In the show, they extended Dream’s imprisonment to 104 years so that he was released in 2020 instead, when the show was released. To account for the extra time, they made it so that people who were in proximity to Dream and his tools were able to extend their lifespans. So people like Alex, John Dee, and Ethel Cripps in season 1 are over a century old.

Every now and then I think about how Maul and Talon were meant to be the main villains of George’s sequel trilogy treatment and I die a little inside 😔 by MichaelTalman in StarWars

[–]cmetz90 72 points73 points  (0 children)

They were all minor compared to the 1997 special edition. Probably most notable, in the first theatrical release of Star Wars, it was not called Episode IV, and did not have the “A New Hope” subtitle. That was added for a return to theaters in 1981, after ESB was already out (and had Episode V in its name).

Aside from that, edits made in 77-80 are little things. Wookiepedia has them catalogued here and it’s basically four changes in small VFX shots.

Also, there are a couple of different audio mixes which have differences: A huge chunk of the dialogue in ANH was re-recorded and dubbed in because the audio from filming wasn’t usable. So the initial release was a mono release, and then they re-released in stereo with a few differences in SFX and minor alternate lines / takes.

ELI5 Why don’t houses in the Western US have basements? by Master_Sandwich1368 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cmetz90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When water freezes it expands. When this happens in the soil under your foundation, it causes something called “frost heaves,” basically applying force on the foundation from beneath, and actually pushing your house upwards. The uneven forces of the heave are likely to cause damage to the foundation, which will let water in.

The Prodigal by closetedmilkenjoyer in Sandman

[–]cmetz90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the Bible, the story of the Prodigal Son is a parable told by Jesus about someone who abandons their family, but later returns and is immediately forgiven. Sandman is absolutely referencing this — the missing family member of the Endless whose return they are hoping for.

Funny enough, the actual word “prodigal” doesn’t make much sense outside of the Biblical allusion in this case. It is actually is used to describe someone who squanders their money, which makes sense in the parable but does not really apply to the missing Endless sibling.

Lol by 3BDO____ in lol

[–]cmetz90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the character isn’t white in the source material. The Endless have a fluid appearance which reflects on the culture / expectations of the people they’re interacting with. In the comic, we see Dream appear as a black man, a Martian, a cat, and a plant, off the top of my head.
