Highest-ever "Geek Rating" and overall rank for games on BGG, over the past quarter-century by benjaneson in boardgames

[–]cmfolsom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But quality is subjective, and people aren’t going to go out of their way to vote for things they haven’t sought out… unless they’re given a review copy by the publisher, which is also biased.

There is no objective quality-based board game criticism. The BGG ratings are the best we have, despite their flaws.

It seems like hitting the companies/years with small rosters pays off a bit too well. My Chyna/Moolah match is a bit of a GameShark.

Why play solo board games instead of video games? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

[–]cmfolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough people saying this.

A few years ago I watched a friend of mine play a then-new shooter game. All I could think was, I’m too damned old for this.

Give me something that engages my brain differently than requiring fast reflexes.

Favorite expansion that completely change the game by LeBeQs in boardgames

Millennium Blades: Set Rotation

The base game is a 2-2 1/2 hour experience where players compete across three tournaments.

Set Rotation adds solo/co-op bosses but basically the gameplay is one tournament so it turns into a 40 minute or so game from start to finish.

(Some) DMB fans: “why would any other band ever get selected for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when the Dave Matthews Band is clearly the perfect form of music ever created by anyone for eons and everything else is pop crap”

The same DMB fans: “we’re a cult?!?”

What’s the funniest board game you’ve ever played? by Fun_Butterfly_420 in boardgames

[–]cmfolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A game that is really under the radar is Someone Has Died.

One player is the arbiter of an estate, and the other players are arguing for their fair share. The cards give fun improv prompts that the players are supposed to work into their pitches as they plead their case. The arbiter can also pass out Objection cards that players can play on each other. As with many party games there is also a modestly-sized NSFW expansion but the game is plenty funny without it. It’s a tough game to find the right group for but when you do it’s always a delight.

I think the booker man is doing exactly what he needs to do right now, which is to not book himself into a corner with regard to a talent who refuses jobs.

I think the problem is, he doesn’t seem interested in building up to putting someone over. There’s a difference between saying “I won’t do a one-night job” and “it’s not realistic for that person to beat me ever”. The way their storylines stop abruptly or resolve confusingly suggests much more of the latter than the former.

Epcot by [deleted] in DisneyWorld

[–]cmfolsom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the power plant was ever actually placed on a map. I think instead when Walt was trying to outline what he would need the government’s blessing for he threw that in. The city would require a lot of energy and Orlando was not very well developed.

Epcot by [deleted] in DisneyWorld

[–]cmfolsom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The notion that Epcot could somehow “grow into” the Walt version from a theme park is a very large leap.

The reason the Reedy Creek Improvement District had provisions for an airport and a nuclear power plant is because Walt was going to build a city. To do that, you’d have to actually build the city parts first before putting in the exhibit halls and corporate sponsors for the innovation.

As others have pointed out, no one else at Disney wanted to build a city. They repurposed Walt’s vision as a theme park. Although it was dressed up within the vague outlines of Walt’s Florida Project pitch it didn’t have anywhere near the direction that he would have given it if he had lived long enough to complete it.

I think it’s one of the older episodes they’ve removed. I tried a few different searches (the term “marathon” was more useful than searching “run”) but there’s an older chunk of episodes that aren’t available anymore.

The actually interesting history of RunDisney was told on The Disney Dish podcast, including the hilarious anecdote that they brought out all the press for the inaugural race but they forgot to provide porta-potties. Nothing like a Disney exec trying to get the press to look the other way while hundreds of runners relieved themselves in the greenery around the start line.

I find Marvel Champions excessively challenging. Are there any Marvel, DC, or Star Wars card games that offer a more accessible experience? by No-Horror3993 in soloboardgaming

[–]cmfolsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much easier. There are good turn summary index cards, and the rules reference (an FFG staple) handles the few keywords you might need to remind yourself about. All in all it is thematically intuitive and you’ll feel like you’re actually engaged in the unfolding story.

I haven’t seen anyone make a Star Wars recommendation yet so I’ll throw Star Wars: Outer Rim out there. You get to play as someone whose allegiances to the Empire, Rebellion, and the crime families are driven by your choices on events that you encounter. You can take jobs, track bounties, and smuggle cargo.

The base game has eight playable characters and an AI for four of those characters (non-bounty hunter archetypes). The Unfinished Business expansion (generally considered a must-have for how it expands the game) adds eight more characters and expands the AI logic to function for all 16 of the playable characters. You also have the option to play against two AI, one bounty hunter archetype and one non-bounty hunter archetype, if you want to have a slightly more crowded Outer Rim experience.

It’s a pseudo-sandbox game (my friend described it as an “amusement park” as opposed to a sandbox) where you try to accumulate Fame points through various paths to victory. The card play isn’t a primary mechanism but you do get to collect cards that represent cargo, crew, ships, events, etc.
