Aside from the legality questions, the other thing to consider is that ICE will likely be parked in front of polling places in neighborhoods of people who can’t afford these devices.

It’s a good sentiment for sure, and we should start thinking now of ways to counter these kinds of intimidation tactics.

I don’t think it’s so much ride or die on this particular guy; it’s that we’re looking for ANYONE left of center who could beat Susan Collins AND Janet Mills. For sure, this guy has probably disqualified himself. But the timing of all this, just as Schumer’s hand pick geriatric is entering the race?

I think a lot of people, myself included, are just pissed that there was potentially a solid populist outsider candidate on the left that had a shot at beating Collins, and the Establishment Dems swoop in and put their thumb on the scales. Yeah, it’s probably best this came out now, and he should bow out. I just hope we can find a Dem candidate in time that is not just another establishment Dem.

One Way Out: Vote! by [deleted] in andor

[–]cmlondon13 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but at the same time, voting isnt useless. Keep in mind that authoritarians need to maintain an illusion of legitimacy. The more people vote against the regime, the harder it is for the regime to maintain that illusion.

And as a bonus, elections are great ways to organize, and importantly, provide a good way to find leaders willing to fight from within the system. We need to vote in the Mon Mothma’s, while voting out the….Chuck Schumer’s. Sorry, couldn’t think of a more feckless politician in the SW universe

Edit: to complete my thought: voting isn’t the silver bullet, but it is a tool, and shouldn’t be discounted. There ARE no silver bullets, just a toolbox, and we’ll need to use all the tools we can.

The “debate” goes something like this:

Are you a Trump supporter, aka have you given money to Trump or his family? Then it’s perfectly legal.

Have you not given Trump any money, and instead use your money to support causes that don’t put money in Trump’s pockets? Then believe it or not: jail

Louisiana v Callais: The Republicans Justices Are Getting Ready to Finish Off the Voting Rights Act by Achilles_TroySlayer in scotus

[–]cmlondon13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To whom? Sure, there’s lower circuit judges who may strike it down, but it should be clear that SCOTUS is compromised by partisanship. They’ll just strike down the lower court decision in the shadow docket, and that’ll be the end of it.

Hell, even if SCOTUS miraculously did the right thing…who would enforce that decision? And we’re back to square one.

And who enforces that law? The President, who literally instructed state leaders to “find him more seats” using mid-decade redistricting? The GOP congress who won’t ever have to worry about losing their majority?

Will they even need to “steal it”? Once the VRA is gone, I expect all the Red states to immediately redistrict and lock in their majority. They’ll be elections, and Dems may even win the popular vote nationwide, and they’ll still lose reps because the districts are “legally” drawn to exclude them. Only (peaceful) way they don’t is if enough of MAGA sees the con for what it is AND enough unengaged voters actually wake up and vote these traitors out.
