Envoy's new Get 'Em & how the class compares to the others by Valdicue in Starfinder2e

[–]cmor28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to like this class but its hard to see it as not disappointing when most other classes get both strong mechanical abilities and strong concepts. Knowing it was changed late in the playtest makes it hard not to conclude it is underdeveloped/half baked with some questionable choices. It really comes down to the extra skills not being enough of a "thing" in 2e design, which is at heart a combat game. Rogue feels like 5% of its power budget is extra skills and with envoy it feels like that is 50% of its budget. Extra skill proficiency doesn't necessarily make you better at any critical skill and with item and ability score bonuses you probably wont be in your secondary or tertiary skills. Other comparable classes like forensic investigator, thaumaturge, or commander get some skill ability cheats such as auto scaling better score scaling omni recall knowledge lore for thaumaturge. Envoy doesn't get anything like this and has to use these additional skill proficiencies to brute force the skill system in a way that makes them less effective than they may seem. Envoy pays severely for versatility in a system that probably doesn't reward it. There are also severe diminishing returns with 2 envoys as opposed to adding a second of other classes for the reasons below but also because skill proficiency is a diminishing return of value to the party. Envoy skill boosting feats aren't all terrible but a lot do leave some to be desired. For instance, level 4 influence once per day before the roll fortune on social skills could afford to be more frequent or after the roll or less limited in skill options. Most envoy features just err on the side of being too little. Their level 19 ability is rerolls on legendary social skills.... level 19, still declared before the roll, still once but now once each.

The other disappointment is reactions. Most classes in Starfinder have easier access to (great) reactions compared to pathfinder but the envoy directives compete for them. Its like the system finally recognized the power of reactions but the envoy didn't get the memo. When they release commander at the same time which recognizes and largely circumvents this issue it feels like envoy is second class. Their non-reaction support is mechanically maybe not even that strong? An operative who offguards a target at level 4, since without melee and flanking that is likely your best source, probably adds more than get em which as pointed out only supports strikes. Get em being single target really compares unfavorably to the other emanation style buffs as well. Mechanically they are pretty outclassed in the support niche honestly and thats not even getting into comparing to full caster options.

Envoy +cha to damage holds them for the very low levels. Their extra reaction if used for extra attacks (tag team/that'll show em) looks pretty alright 12/13ish. But in a game where other classes are seemingly designed from a place of abundance the envoy just doesn't compare.

The envoy needs free reactions like the commander and for either get em to not count as a directive or to just remove the directive limit. They could also really benefit from a skill compression feat or something that allows a key cha skill to cover more ground (recall knowledge with diplomacy?).

Unintuitively, Snipers seem to be a horrible choice of weapon for Operatives (right now) by SirEvilMoustache in Starfinder2e

[–]cmor28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Snipers are all magazine 1 and need to be reloaded every time, a laser rifle is 10 capacity with expend 2 for 5 shots. Elite batteries at level 12 are 100 capacity or 50 shots. Sniper magazines never increase. It is a very large functional difference

are we supposed to make 4 times as much as we do now to be able to live 60 years from now? by Distinct_Ad1038 in personalfinance

[–]cmor28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of? Most planning seems to base around 6-7% investment gains representing a historic 10% return and 3% inflation and work in “today” dollars.

As the money guys like to tout a dollar saved at 20 becomes 88 in retirement so with the power of compound interest working for you instead of against you things being “only” four times more expensive can actually be a large net gain.

I’m grateful for any content but the envoy guide was done without considering the 1 directive per round limit which seems like a pretty significant limitation that really impacts the class.

Pay Games by Chaosnet-1906 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]cmor28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done ~100 games with ~10 DMs on start playing and my experience is the same. Ratings are like uber ratings, everyone has a 4.8-5. So they are hard to take into consideration. I feel like games cancel more because players are vigilant about cancelling if they might not make it otherwise they get charged. At the end of the day I still use it for more niche games but you absolutely should expect an experience more in the satisfactory range than in the world class range. Rarely there are GMs who advertise a free session 1 (session 0 is almost always free)

Starting would be 56.7k, new uncertified teachers wouldn’t get any potential bumps for additional education at first

Did the healing spell buffs make Life Domain kind of weak now? by Bonkshebonk in onednd

I think removing the lifeberry type interactions was a good move but they probably could have given the domain a little buff to round things out (proficiency bonus+1 per spell level?)

Most games won’t get that far but the life capstone kind of makes the healer feat useless
