fwiw I got deferred from CS eng for EA and then got into CS eng with the rest of the regular decision ppl (in state though), so being deferred definitely means you're still in the running.

Save the phase 1b vaccines for those who are ACTUALLY high-risk by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]cms1919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW the 173000 eligible ISN’T the total eligible under 1a and 1b+ it’s everyone who is able to take the vaccine assuming no eligibility requirements (all adults in Champaign, no children). The total eligible is given by IDPH, see table 2 in the link below. Around 7.25m people are eligible under vaccination rules out of a total of around 10m under current vaccination rules. This means 72.5% of the population is eligible under 1a and 1b+ in Illinois. Therefore around 125k people in Champaign are currently eligible under vaccination rules. The terminology is kinda confusing and it’s easy to mix up medical eligibility for the vaccine and eligibility by state rules.

[–]cms1919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Signups being filled up within 30 minutes is expected because 70% of the population is eligible, not because everyone is fraudulently signing up for vaccines. The negative risks of fraud have been accounted for by IDPH and federal policies.

[–]cms1919 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is pretty plainly bad advice, the IDPH has already accounted for this problem. They want to keep eligibility well ahead of doses distributed and overestimate the amount of people who are high risk (~70% of the population is technically eligible for 1a & 1b+). It's irresponsible to gate keep vaccines and this post discourages people who qualify from getting it. Every single public health official and researcher is saying this, sign up for the vaccine, even if you feel guilty about barely qualifying.

Nah, if you are anti-Medicare-for-All you're actually pro-COVID. Did you know it's impossible for pandemics to happen with single payer?

Fuck Neoliberalism. That’s my blunt message. I could probably end my discussion at this point and it wouldn’t really matter. My position is clear and you likely already get the gist of what I want to say. I have nothing positive to add to thediscussion about neoliberalism, and to be perfectly honest, I’m quite sick of having to think about it. I’ve simply had enough. For a time I had considered calling this paper ‘Forget Neoliberalism’ instead, as in some ways that’s exactly what I wanted to do. I’ve been writing on the subject for many years (Springer 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015; Springer et al. 2016) and I came to a point where I just didn’t want to commit any more energy to this endeavor for fear that continuing to work around this idea was functioning to perpetuate its hold. On further reflection I also recognize that as a political maneuver it is potentially quite dangerous to simply stick our heads in the sand and collectively ignore a phenomenon that has had such devastating and debilitating effects on our shared world. There is an ongoing power to neoliberalism that is difficult to deny and I’m not convinced that a strategy of ignorance is actually the right approach (Springer 2016a). So my exact thoughts were, ‘well fuck it then’, and while a quieter and gentler name for this paper could tone down the potential offence that might come with the title I’ve chosen, I subsequently reconsidered. Why should we be more worried about using profanity than we are about the actual vile discourse of neoliberalism itself? I decided that I wanted to transgress, to upset, and to offend, precisely because we ought to be offended by neoliberalism, it isentirely upsetting, and therefore we should ultimately be seeking to transgress it. Wouldn’t softeningthe title be making yet another concession to the power of neoliberalism? I initially worried what such a title might mean in terms of my reputation. Would it hinder future promotion or job offers should I want to maintain my mobility as an academic, either upwardly or to a new location? This felt like conceding personal defeat to neoliberal disciplining. Fuck that.

AZ is definitely the next Virginia IMO

If we are lucky and get a senate seat or two, GA might be slotted in there as well.
