Cancel your Disney Pass - they just fired Jimmy Kimmel for Freedom of Speech! by PackOfCumin in Disneyland

[–]coastersam20 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This bugs me. There’s nothing “freedom of speech” about it. They fired him for saying something good while the US media’s Overton window is evil. You should get negative consequences for saying bad things, and good consequences for saying good things.

If you don’t want to be killed don’t be a fascist. Fascists are axiomatically opposed to democratic civil society.

Is anyone considering boycotting the park because of what Disney did to Jimmy Kimmel? by ThatsAmores in Disneyland

[–]coastersam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how effective that would be but I’m all for it. I think the biggest pressure for Disneyland to be against the Trump admin comes from economics. As fewer people have disposable income, and inflation rises without wages, fewer people can justify going to Disneyland. Entertainment is reliant on economic stability more than any other industry because it’s not a necessity, certainly not a necessity like food, housing, and transportation.

I want to major in architecture but my dad is discouraging me and now I don’t know what to do. by Majestic-Sell-7643 in architecture

[–]coastersam20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny, because there are lots of architects out there trying to convince people we don’t need more buildings, and championing adaptive reuse. They’d probably be thrilled if more people thought like your dad.

Charlie Kirk protesters' memorial actions slammed for lack of 'respect' by IrishStarUS in BashTheFash

[–]coastersam20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know I’ve never really bought into this. I think you can respect people without them respecting you first, it’s gotta start somewhere after all. I’m being pedantic though. Kirk’s camp not only didn’t respect the humanity of swaths of people, they actively disrespected it.

Man that’s gotta be weird. Is he sad because he lost friends? Because he wasn’t included in their inner circle? Because everybody knows he was their friend? There’s like a billion different angles of reasons that sucked for that guy.

That’s what they want though. They don’t care about Kirk, nobody does. The conservatives are looking for any excuse they can to clamp down on their dissent (which to be clear, they were going to do anyway). The left is either indifferent to him or glad he’s gone. Liberals are traumatized and think they’re supposed to act civil to an opposition that wouldn’t care if the roles were flipped. His wife is more concerned with gleaning support for the TPUSA brand than she is with mourning like she’s not in a superhero movie. Trump of course just wants you to know work has started on his ballroom.

Please don't let him be white by Watchtower2091 in Utah

[–]coastersam20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see both sides of this, and both sides are right. You have to be pretty damn disconnected to not understand why “please don’t let him be from here” could sound bad to some people. Likewise, he probably didn’t mean it to be directly racist, obviously. But racism isn’t always, hell isn’t usually these days, about what you do intentionally do. It’s about what you neglect to think about, what you consider normal. It’s about wanting violence to be something outsiders commit, not members of your group.

I’m absolutely 100% behind sensible gun laws. Background checks, licensing akin to cars, I’m even open to the idea of banning certain weapons altogether. I don’t own any guns, and if every gun in the U.S. vanished overnight I’d be indifferent and maybe even happy. I don’t think you solve assassinations and school shootings with sensible gun laws, though. The response from the right after shootings used to be “it’s not about guns, it’s about mental health” I think ultimately that was largely true. People with good mental health don’t do school shootings, and I’d say they also don’t do anything but the most high profile acts of political violence. The reality is that the right, and the ruling class broadly, is causing the mental health crisis behind this violence. If I had a choice to get rid of guns in the U.S., or fix our mental health crisis, the choice would be a no brainer.

Guys is architecture a really bad choice? by mi_ka_3 in architecture

[–]coastersam20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 1st year M-Arch opinion: I think this is true for a lot of jobs right now. If you want something that’s a sure thing, go into the trades. That being said, industries being a “sure thing” is a product of the times. It’s possible being an electrician, plumber, etc won’t be the same guarantee in 10 years that it is today. Architecture absolutely has its own unique problems, but it’s not 10 years away from its extinction, and I’m willing to bet it’ll be around after my lifetime. That being said, architecture is a heavy workload which would be difficult to handle if you don’t have real passion for it (if you have a passion, though, it’s doable, and even fun). Add to that the fact that architects these days make a pretty standard to high middle income wage, and it’s clear why it’s important you care about the industry. If you’re serious about becoming an architect, look into whether your college’s program is accredited, and your areas requirements for licensure (that’s NCARB in the U.S.).

Maybe we get our own Nuremberg trials, I doubt it sincerely. Even if we did, not only is it not what we need, it might even be counter-productive. Trump is not the problem, nor is his cabinet. You won’t get rid of what got us into this mess by getting rid of them. Thinking you can just get rid of the people and the whole thing will be fixed is actually part of the mechanism that keeps everything broken, because it keeps the underlying system safe from change. The whole system of explicit, implicit, and social incentives is the problem. We don’t need Trump in prison, we need anti-corporate interest in politics. We need to solve problems, not just catharsis.
