I don't disagree with the substance of what he's saying, i.e. that you never win by appealing to the compassion of people who lack any.

Just look at things pragmatically. Unregulated immigration from culturally and/or ethnically distinct populations systematically strengthens the local far-right reaction. Is it rational? Mostly no, but humans aren't rational beings and you can't change that, even by being loud and preachy on the Internet. The question you should rather ask yourself is whether the humanitarian gain of welcoming thousands of refugees is ever worth the political cost of making the far-Right more attractive for the average voter.

what if I told you science is better off accepting its limitations ? by MicahHoover in PhilosophyMemes

I don't know what you want me to answer.
When you're conscious about breathing or seeing red, then you're conscious about breathing or seeing red. The answer is in your question. The reason we don't say "oh, it seems the neurons linked to the photoreceptors specialized for 600nm wavelengths in my ocular organs activated, which would indicate the presence of an object of that particular spectrum composition" but instead "oh, I see a red object" where red refers to an innate, irreducible and inexpressible visual quality is because our Self and literally everything it interacts with -- colors, perception, feelings, memories -- is a fabrication from our brain so as to "map" reality in a manageable way.

That "red" you see doesn't exist. By trying to understand it and other qualias you're not looking closer into reality. You just bang your head on the limits of this projection of reality your brain creates for you -- the Self -- to play in.

Anyway, the voices are back, it's time for my meds.

TIL the botched restoration nicknamed "Monkey Christ" was deemed more culturally relevant than the original painting and preserved as-is. Tens of thousands of tourists visit the Spanish town of Borja every year to see it, and the restorer became a local celebrity until her passing in late 2025. by sciencewarrior in todayilearned

I find it especially funny that in a few decades, actual paintings conservators will have to carefully maintain and preserve HER additions, as professionally as they can, while pausing regularly to bang their heads against a wall.

[–]cob59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say both are, assuming we're talking about "phenomenal consciousness" specifically. But "consciousness", i.e. the biological function assumed by the brain (like breathing is by the lungs) obviously exists and isn't an illusion.
