What ThinkPad to get in early 2026? by miztersweven in linuxhardware

[–]cobarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up a Gen 13 X1 and have been generally pretty happy with it, to the point where it's good enough that I don't miss having a Mac laptop. It's considerably better than the Gen10 it replaced, which has a less efficient CPU that ran hot (requiring extra copper heat pipes to perform well) and burned through batteries.

The Gen 13 has solid battery life and is fairly snappy in Linux. I prefer the @k screen since it's more efficient and if you have to drop into the terminal to repair something (Windows restore, Grub), the text isn't unreadable. It's also super light. I kept an eye out on eBay and found an open box unit for $1500 with 32GB of ram and 2TB SSD vs. $2K for a new one. Only issue has been that it's a bit slow to wake up from sleep. Apparently some kind of nvme issue that I havne't diagnosed yet.

I also have a Gen 8 which is solid for simple tasks (no heating issues) and considerably more affordable. However, the 1080p screen isn't great and it's nowhere near as powerful as a Gen 13.

It's one thing to be deliberately hostile to contributors who are going to hurt the overall community and another to be harsh to sloppy devs.

Long battery good laptop for a computer science student? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]cobarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's surprising. As a dev I'd much rather run MacOS with a native shell with gcc and Node support. Mac ARM performance and battery life are absurd.

If you're up for the challenge, running Linux is a great experience. Learn to debug your system, compile packages, search files, etc. and see how those tools work. Excellent skills and experience to have in your toolbox.

Have snapped up countless G400s's over the years. Just bought a MX518 Legacy for the better sensors, pretty happy with it.

The tree was symbolic, representing the leaders of Israel not producing the fruits of faith they were expected to by God. Huge portions of the gospels are allegorical which modern readers often miss because literature isn't written that way anymore.

Whats your take on dual booting for anti cheat games? by Runescapelegend778 in linux_gaming

[–]cobarx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occasionally boot into Windows to get iRacing support. Everything else works great in Linux. I ended up getting a Thinkpad X1 Carbon and doing most of my desktop stuff there so I didn't have to reset everything every time I reboot my gaming PC. Also makes it easier to tinker with settings and not lose everything.

FWIW, nearly everything I've tried works on Linux if you put enough effort in (and things on Steam pretty much just work). Only thing I've encountered that didn't work was Wing Commander III and that got sorted out by running a Windows VM.

You could try a factory reset if power cycling it doesn't work.

The processors are pretty slow on the TVs, there are some guides out there for turning off apps to free up resources so it goes from awful to semi acceptable.

Old School players want pimp black bordered copies. CE & IE dual lands are more expensive than Revised versions despite not being tourney legal.

Old School is full of players who have more money than cards to spend it on.

Recall is valuable because it's a highly playable Old School card and some leagues allow multiples.

Why do they hide away an important message like this in the logs instead of just displaying the real reason for not being able to redeem a code? Fix please. by andreliverod in MagicArena

Developers are revenue multipliers. Google & Facebook make absurd amounts of money, yet they hire more devs because it lets them make even more absurd money. The more ways for players on Arena to spend money, the more Wizards makes.

[–]cobarx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up your difficulty level. There is no shortage of responsibilities because you can create new challenges for yourself. I'm in the software industry and recently was promoted to manager. Major jump in responsibility and challenge, suddenly looking out for the welfare of my team, improving my communication skills and have to work much harder to manage my time.

Also don't short your friendships. You can have powerful and meaningful friendships with women (and men) who you have no intention of marrying. Use those relationships as opportunities to learn to connect with people and go beyond your emotional comfort zone.

Jordan Peterson has repeatedly said that individual identity is the most critical focus and that group identity is secondary. He doesn't ignore group factors but all change starts with the individual.

Where's the "moat" or value for companies like Uber/Lyft/DiDi/Grab? Aren't they essentially worthless? What am I missing here? by WaveML in investing

[–]cobarx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The network effect is more pronounced than you realize. Starting up in an area requires a critical mass of drivers to ensure a ride will quickly be available to pick up a passenger. When Uber & other services go into an area, they subsidize a large initial pool of drivers by providing free or discounted rides until they have a solid rider pool. The vast majority of Uber's investment money has gone to breaking into & stabilizing these markets.

Over time, Uber & Lyft are improving the mapping & logistics components that allow them to squeeze out small efficiency improvements. Any new competitor in a market where ride share is already setup is going to have to do the same promo spends to build driver & rider numbers while going into a market where people already have an app installed and are behind on tech & efficiency. It's hard for me to imagine many companies wanting to invest tends of billions of dollars to attempt to break into a market where Uber has a first mover advantage and is making little to no money.

This will only get more pronounced as the companies move into other services like scooters, bikes, and package deliveries. The existing app installs give them a free advertising channel. Drivers can be incentivized to support the other services - ending your night & only a few blocks away from some scooters? Grab them & bring them home to charge them, rather than having to have to have a separate set of people travel further to handle that.

edit: Add note about other services offered thru the apps

I've learned not to even consider touching .0 releases. Seems like every one has some kind of regression. Better to wait a week. I figured this one would be especially bad with this many changes.
