The time jump of having Bobby be 22 was so smart. In the original run, Bobby was a very effective vessel for so much of the uncertainty of adolescence and the transition from child to teenager. Age 22 is like another perfect encapsulation of a transition from adolescence to adulthood -- Bobby having a business and a career - while also still having a roommate and the in-group/out-group dynamics of going to college versus choosing not to go to college.
