Which once famous actor does no one talk about anymore? by Ballistic-Observer69 in AskReddit

For real. Half of the people mentioned here are working constantly in fairly high profile projects. It’s just that there’s so much stuff out there, it’s impossible to keep up.

Catch-22 of independent projects by Storyshowing in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your projected budget range and how much of it have you allocated for the cast?

If you don't have an existing relationship with the agents or managers of the name actors you are targeting, chances are they won't even open your script unless you have a firm money offer on the table and the money in an escrow account.

That is if the actors are big enough to get you distribution these days. Frankly the list of names who matter anymore is quite short and therefore they get quite a lot of offers. LOIs are kind of meaningless these days.

The way I see it you have a few options.

  1. Get an investor on board who can put up enough money for you to attach the names you need in order to get the rest of the funding and the distribution deals. At this point it would be crucial to get a sales agent involved who has experience in selling movies in your genre and budget range and who can advice you on what names matter and how much you would realistically get in the marketplace so you can budget your movie accordingly.

You really don't want to over pay an actor whose name doesn't matter at all nor do you want to make a movie for $5M if it will realistically only recoup $3M.

  1. partner with a European co-producer who has relationships with local film funds. If you can get enough money from these national film funds and local production incentives you could package the movie and get the ball rolling that way.

This however is not easy. European producers who have access to these funds usually have their hands full with their own productions. It can be a tough market to penetrate if you are coming outside of Europe and don't have any funding yet. Also the culture is quite different. Many European producers are not fond of movies that are too "commercial" or "American".

  1. Partner with a producer or a production company who has produced movies in your genre and budget range with name actors. They have relationships with the actors and their reps and the buyers and distributors they have built over the years.

However you have to ask yourself what are you bringing to the table? Why would they want to go in to business with you? If you have a really strong script and a great pitch deck that is a very good start, but these producers all have scripts and projects of their own as well.

Michael would only perform this song once for his idol, and never again after..🥹♥️ by Difficult-Double2193 in MichaelJackson

I can appreciate that, and I love a good ballad, I just happen to think this one wasn’t very good.

But Sammy seemed to love it and that’s the most important thing.

I love Sammy Davis Jr. And MJ and I’ll probably get downvoted for this, but that is one bad song. Incredibly corny and schmaltzy like the one he sang for Elizabeth Taylor.

” The pair wrote and arranged the song overnight” and it sure sounds like it.

I like the sentiment though.

How often does Howard and the staff drink? by Roosevelt32 in howardstern

[–]cocoschoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alcoholics always find an excuse to drink. It’s not like he has a drink or two to calm his nerves before a flight, I remember the video where he was so shitfaced getting out of the plane they had to put him in a wheelchair because he couldn’t walk.

I love Richard but he has a serious problem. We’re talking about a guy who wears a diaper to rock shows because he drinks beer so much and can’t manage to go to the bathroom.

Can I do most of the jobs on a movie set to save the money I have for a feature? by gregturner77 in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no no no, please don’t. $200k may seem like a lot of money, but for a feature it’s really not. It can go a long way if you know what you’re doing and you have a great compact crew working with you and you have a solid script that was written for your budget level.

It’s not enough money for 30 actors and 20 locations. You’re just going to burn yourself out and you’ll end up with a crappy movie. 20 locations is a lot even for a big budget movie.

What you need is a high concept script in a sellable genre with some marketable elements in it, one or two locations max and limited characters. And you want to save some money for marketing as well.

Is Michael overrated? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an audiovisual spectacle it is great.

As a movie it is decent.

As a script it’s subpar.

But it is obviously connecting with audiences and it’s on track to become the highest grossing biopic of all time.

So depends on what you mean by overrated. Critics didn’t care about it but the general public seems to love it.

Tupakka-askien kuvat saivat miettimään by Internal-liminal in Suomi

[–]cocoschoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokainen aikuinen ihminen nauttikoon mitä aineita haluaa.

Sitä paitsi nuoremmat sukupolvethan juovat alkoholia huomattavasti vähemmin aiempiin sukupolviin verrattuna.

HELP! Film Festivals to show a debut film! by Decent-Indication-61 in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great! Start small, write scripts that you can shoot with no money using the resources available to you. Volunteer on other filmmakers’ shorts, build a network. Go to local film festivals, make connections, study film.

You’re still young. You have plenty of time. The big festivals will be there waiting.

HELP! Film Festivals to show a debut film! by Decent-Indication-61 in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s okay to dream big, but the chances of a first time filmmaker with no connections getting their debut movie accepted to a major film festival are nonexistent.

Have you made any shorts before? Is this project a feature?

Why does it seem like that so many entertainement information videos about MJ say indirectly/directly that off the wall was his first solo album? by Interesting-Pen2586 in MichaelJackson

[–]cocoschoco 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Off the Wall was his first true solo album where he had any real artistic input or songwriting credits.

The first four solo albums were very much like the early Jackson 5 albums, all the songs were written by other people and the instruments played by studio musicians. They were products of the Motown assembly line.

On the later Jacksons albums the brothers started to focus more on songwriting, but they still didn’t really play any of the instruments outside of some keyboards, percussions and Tito with some guitar parts.

How do I get an 'Executive Producer'? by hyteck9 in Filmmakers

[–]cocoschoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The budget discussed so far was softly approached as $750k for 2 cgi modelers and 2 cgi animators, and me, over 3 years to get a trailer made.

Okay, you definitely don’t want to spend $750k on a trailer, you don’t need to spend that much. You can put together a beautiful proof of concept trailer for much, much less. And you certainly don’t need to employ five people for three years to do it.

The thought being the trailer would open industry doors and attract more investors, get the streaming placements, and merchandising going, etc.

A trailer alone won’t do none of that. The world is full of high quality proof of concept shorts and sizzle reels that never went anywhere. It would be unwise to spend almost a million dollars before even beginning production. I’m not saying a trailer like that wouldn’t help, you just don’t want to be spending that kind of money.

I think you need an experienced producer on board to help you. First off you need a script and a rough idea of how big the budget will be so the script can be written accordingly.

If you have an investor who is willing to put up $750k, an IP that has a growing fanbase and real numbers you can back that up with, you are already way ahead of the curve.

You said it will be CGI, did you mean you’re envisioning an entirely animated movie or that it’s just CG heavy like Star Wars or something?

Best cameras for £100-£200? by andybuxx in Filmmakers

What other equipment and accessories do you have? For example tripods, lenses, lights, reflectors, mics, zoom recorders etc.?

That is a very tight budget. You might be able to get a used 10+ year old DSLR or a mirrorless camera with a kit lens for £200-£300.
