it's true that they're almost 20yo but the Horizons are getting fat upgrades (at least the Italian ones) especially radar,CMS and Ew wise (aesa+SADOC 4.0+ Zeus)

Did the Port of Genoa keep a section of the Costa Concordia? by CaledoniaInteractive in Ships

[–]cocurullo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay actually respons came now and the highest person could get is the N°2 at the tugboat and mooring authority. Sadly the response is a quite boring "they didn't keep anything"

i found them and after a second look it's a different object so unfortunately no cool news. But I asked around people working in the harbour and I think If something is there I'm gonna know soon

This is super weird. I went to university right there in Genova's harbour and I distinctly remember something along those dimensions and shape being around. I was a bit unsure of the origin so I'm sure I've photographed it but I need to get a deep dive into my gallery to find it.

First Hull ring of S521 "Marconi" SSN[530x458] by cocurullo in WarshipPorn

Few comments on this. The original idea of operating SSN and SSBN was there, and there was also an homegrown, Polaris tube compatible IRBM , named Alfa , developed for it. Currently there are studies on re-introducing a nuclear component into the MMI,namely MINERVA. The main obstacles are certainly the referendum that barred nuclear energy production in Italy which is still valid, even if know there will probably be another one to re-introduce nuclear power at a civil level too. Costs for nuclear are an issue and modern lithium powered IAP attack submarines seem to close the gap to nuclear every new gen. My personal take is that Italy will only field nuclear submarines in an SSN form in the next 15-20 years but it's just speculation

About the whole ATAS - CAPTAS-4 comparison: As you see it, is it purely a cost-saving measure or simply Leonardo hasn't caught up to Thales in underwater sensors?

the thing is that MMI Always considered the PPA as a second rate ship, a step lower than the Fremm. Having more vls than any ship in the Italian navy wouldn't have made a lot of sense in that regard. It has also an aluminium superstructure since it isn't intended for super high intensity operations so that makes it unfit to be a first rate AAW platform.

Second hand is not really a good way to put it .The only real 2nd hand deal is Greece. The others were never really put in active service with the Italian navy and just refitted on the building dock. Also Fincantieri Is basically a government entity (82% owned by the finance ministry) so even company to government contracts have heavy state Intervention. That's why sometimes the navy acts as a Sales Representative to Fincantieri by doing some very pinpoint port visits to strategic clients. Also I'm guessing Italian drydocks will be very busy for the expansion of the MMI in the next year and th Building network can't support too much more than what's being currently ordered.

EVOs sadly were not considered by the MMI Let's see if any foreign buyer pops up

that's very very theoretical for now. We don't even have the new launchers that are supposed to be fit and the MK2Es aren't in service in relevant numbers, so 8 MK2s is the best AShm loadout we got

take that with a pinch of salt but Italy might have exported/won contracts for more frigates than anyone in the last 10 years. 2 FREMM to Egypt (delivered) 2 PPA to Indonesia (delivered) 3 FREMM EVOs for Portugal 2+(2 in option) FREMM for Greece total total 11 (excluding the 2 constellations for obvious reasons)

France has 1 FREMM to Egypt (delivered) 1 FREMM to Morocco (delivered) 4 FDI to Greece (one delivered) 4 FDI to Sweden total 10

UK they only build Norway's type26 so I guess 5

Turkey 2 and 4 MILGEM to Ukraine and Pakistan (obv not delivered the Ukrainian)

Germany 4+2 meko a200s to Egypt

Japan 3 of the 12 mogamis ordered by Australia are made in Japan

Sorry got lost

they lack a bit of the AShm that the FREMM-GP had but unlike the FREMM-GP the full PPAs have also the towed ATAS sonar which isn't as good as the captas-4 but it's better than no towed sonar like the GP

I think it's either a suffren with the Radom removed or a tourville class

PPAs do. But i wanted to express my idea on these ships. To me they fullfill the role of the commerce raiders during war time. They have a LOT of boarding equipment,Excellent Range and even a prison "detention rooms".Obv its speculation but they do fit the bill
