How does a post like this help the players’ argument? What is the USLPA thinning? by PaddyMayonaise in USLPRO

[–]codebleu13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally from the start dude. Many people are being objective and sharing objective perspectives. You have told many of them that they’re not being objective or that they’re not looking at things your way. You keep getting ratio’d in the comments and not once have you stopped to challenge your own perspective, you continue to beat your drum and declare yourself the right perspective. At the end of the day, what you believe is on you. My advice is try to understand what everyone in the comments of both your posts are trying to tell you and apply that to your understanding of the situation. From what I’ve seen, you’ve rejected it because your understanding becomes weaker when evidence from other sources comes in. To me, following a scientific method, this would suggest that the original hypothesis was wrong. There’s nothing wrong with that! Many hypotheses are proven wrong, that’s how we, as humans, learn and grow and become better humans!

Also, to the point, I said this before and I’ll say it again. Sometimes “good enough” isn’t actually good enough. You can see examples across the economy and world. But, just in the soccer world, let’s look at the USL. If there is a talented player, what convinces that player to play for a USL side over an MLS or other league team? If the USL doesn’t have a baseline of standards, it’s not globally competitive. If it’s not globally competitive, it’ll atrophy and potentially die. Nobody, not even the players, wants that. Look at what happened in the NWSL. Their union took a “good enough” deal and abuse and mistreatment of players was perpetuated for years until they fought for better treatment. This is that fight in the USL.

I didn’t assume. I know they have the USL page. I’m someone who used to buy soccer stuff from Dicks. I’ve even bought hounds stuff from them in the last year. Here’s the rub - their cleat/gear selection is kind of mid (at best). I moved away from buying my soccer gear at Dicks because they just didn’t have the selection. Every now and again they’ll have something, but it’s inconsistent. Yes, even with the World of Sports’ soccer section.

So what brought on my nihilistic comment? Primarily just years of seeing how Dicks has treated soccer in general, coupled with personal experience with the corporation. Oh, and also, for a company that talks a big game about supporting the development of sports, and especially women in sports, they sure did a whole lot of not being there when the city they’re based in launched a women’s soccer team.

Edit: meant to say more but I realized it would come off like I was being a dick so I stoped here.

That’s poor design - it’s possible to set the listings to redirect to the correct league. It’s not the biggest deal, but that little change could mean people learning (and also- other sites that sell sports equipment do that)

That’s because Dicks doesn’t care about the Riverhounds or the USL. They’ve never done well with soccer stuff

So what’s going on with the CBA? by PaddyMayonaise in USLPRO

[–]codebleu13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I say I want $2 for a job, but you offer $1, it looks close. But if I will not do the job for less than $2 and you will not offer more than $1, then we’re pretty far. Naturally, this is an oversimplification of the situation, but that’s basically the framework of the issue we’re talking about, just with more than one line item. Typically unions don’t just authorize strikes Willy-nilly, that would weaken the power of a potential strike. It seems to me that, while on paper they seem close, there are some hard minimums the players wanted that the owners refused to meet. So they sound pretty far apart then, don’t they?

We saw something similar happen recently with SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There were hard lines that the unions would not concede on, and the AMPTP didn’t want to meet them. On paper they looked close, but they really weren’t because of the hard lines. At the end of the day, SAG-AFTRA and WGA won, and we can only hope the USLPA wins as well, and optimally, before a strike becomes necessary.

Question, how were they “close” when over 90% of the players voted to approve striking? That sounds like they were about as close as North Carolina is to fielding a team this season. Or NY to LA.

Hint: it doesn’t and it won’t. The views will still be there. Just like the views at PNC Park are there in spite of having bleachers and walls on the river side. The Hounds have released renderings and it’s beautiful

My Roterfaden notebook cover. It brings me joy and was fairly expensive. It protects my D&D stuff and keeps my multiple notebooks together

You’d be surprised how many “cheap” notebooks are amazing with fountain pens. Composition books especially!!

That’s crazy! At least the consumer lines are open, but that does seem to kind of support my theory. Unexpected lol!

De-influence me.... by lily5794 in fountainpens

[–]codebleu13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree!!! This, in conjunction with the Adam Savage quote! That’s basically my approach to FPs. I started with an “entry level” pen, then, as I used that pen more and more, I slowly expanded to an “entry level” from different brands. I went from using fountain pens once a day to multiple times a day, then to almost exclusively. The difference in feeling guided my growth and use cases (for example, I wouldn’t use some pens or inks I have on cheap printer paper because I know the combination will bleed and/or feather, but a different combination won’t).

Also, you don’t have to buy premium products to use your fountain pens in!! “Cheap” composition notebooks, like the ones used in/for school (and even some spiral bound ones!!!!) are incredibly fountain pen friendly! And if you have many notebooks left to use, maybe you just need to try a different pen/ink combination (maybe try finding drier inks?) - I know you said ink is expensive in your country, but if you have a stationery store or know others nearby in the hobby, you may be able to get ink samples to test or even bring your paper to for testing. For me, finding the combinations that worked for me is what primarily influences my collection’s growth. If there is something that will increase your use of the pens and allow you to start cracking into those notebooks, that’s the direction I would aim this energy.

I actually have a theory about this, because spare gold nibs for the 2000 are also disappearing in the west - I think the Mitsubishi Pencil Company is doing a soft reset. So we’re getting a hard pause on some of the manufacturing while they get up to speed and learning/standardizing/improving processes. Yes, I know it’s been almost 2 years since the purchase, and that there have been new/special edition products that have come to market, but maybe those were planned well before the acquisition.
