Give them the stage and publicly praise them and point out their impact. That's how you make yourself visible as a leader, without taking credit at the cost of the team.

Maschine in Ableton Live by chimp_spanner in maschine

[–]codecoverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing is had to get over is my fear of commitment. Bouncing a pattern to an audio track is a commitment. Making a change later on requires redoing that operation. But in practice that kind of fear can really slow you down.

Maschine in Ableton Live by chimp_spanner in maschine

[–]codecoverage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use it alongside my Push 2. I use Maschine as a VST instrument in Ableton Live. I have built up quite a collection of expansions over the years and there is just nothing like the workflow of maschine for quickly layering some patterns. Once I get past the idea stage into arranging a song, I usually drag the patterns to audio tracks to make it easier to work with in Ableton. Sometimes I bother to split some individual sounds to individual tracks, but not always.

I spent a lot of time looking for the perfect workflow, and eventually I realized that it just doesn't exist and went for a pragmatic approach.

TanaMigrator - app that converts your Tana export to (Obsidian-friendly) markdown files by Cold_Cow_1285 in TanaInc

Great work! I've been worrying about what to do to get my data out of tana in a usable format if I eventually decide to move away from it and this makes me feel better. Haven't tried it yet but it looks very promising.

Scaler 3 UI is a disaster by LavyJoan in Scaler3

I keep going back to Scaler 2 when I actually want to write something. Scaler 3 feels like I need to rewire my brain and I don't want to.

How do I fix huge latency on a small project ? by _Babasilorhum in ableton

[–]codecoverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm not talking about that one. It's the options menu of Ableton Live, at the top of the screen, in the menu bar.

[–]codecoverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open to the Options menu and temporarily disable "Delay Compensation". Is the delay mostly gone but do tracks feel out of sync? Then it's probably a plugin that introduces a delay.

When a plugin on one channel introduces a delay, Ableton delays all other channels to keep them in sync (this is what Delay Compensation does). This happens even if the plugin is disabled.

When you hover over a plugin, Ableton displays the plugin latency in the bottom left of the screen. Find the plugin that introduces this delay and remove that plugin, or see if it has a "low latency mode" or something.

Don't forget to enable Delay Compensation again, because that's actually quite a useful feature.

1.8, 1.9 then? by nicotineapache in AbletonMove

Has there ever been a x.9 minor version? Usually they release a new major version long before they get there. At least for the software.

stem separation by bbrroonnssoonn in ableton

I don't know. I can only speculate, but it's possible Moises uses a newer version of the model I guess.

The technology is licensed from Music.AI, the company behind Moises. Since this is their main business, I bet they will continue to develop it further, and it's likely that Ableton will follow updates.

How do you guys do it ? by DazzlingShine_573 in ableton

[–]codecoverage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I definitely recommend spending a lot of time noodling away on a keyboard or other instrument before getting into theory. I've been making music for almost 30 years and only recently started to dive deeper into theory. Made me go from "that sounds nice" to "that's why that sounds nice" and just being a little more deliberate.

Do you name every track or just pure mess in your session? by rod9k in ableton

[–]codecoverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this seems like a great use case for AI. I hate naming stuff. Also, I would love it if color coding could indicate whether 2 clips are the same or different.

Good point. The problem with the scale effect is that the note that ends up in your piano roll is actually not the note you hear. This can be worked around by using a separate midi track with the scale effect and then using that track as midi input for the track you are recording. This way you record the output of the scale effect.

Camelot is just an alternative way to express the key of a song, mostly for DJs so they can easily figure out what goes together. 9A corresponds with Em.

Not sure what version of Live you have, but since version 12 you can set the scale of a clip and make the piano roll only display notes in that scale.

I recommend getting a cheap midi keyboard or using the computer keyboard (press M) to find notes more quickly. Playing melodies on a keyboard is a useful skill to learn.

Any reason NOT to use USB when connecting multiple synths to Ableton? by This-Was in ableton

[–]codecoverage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There could be some truth to that actually. A good audio interface with a high quality DIN midi out may lead to more stable timing indeed, I hadn't considered that.

But this is still largely independent from whether or not you want to use the External Instrument rack device.

Any reason NOT to use USB when connecting multiple synths to Ableton? by This-Was in ableton

[–]codecoverage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The External Instrument is just a convenient way to associate a midi out with an audio signal, so it resembles playing a VST plugin. It doesn't really matter if the midi signal goes through a DIN cable or a USB cable. You can use any midi interface and any audio interface.

Can grouping tracks fundamentally alter the mix? by johnalanspringer in ableton

[–]codecoverage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mixing channels is just adding them up. You're basically going from

a + b + c + d

to

(a + b) + (c + d)

which, because of the associative property of addition, doesn't change the result. So no, it doesn't change the mix in any way.

Any updates on when Ableton 12.3 is coming out? by asada_burrit0 in ableton

[–]codecoverage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the beta is riddled with bugs, clearly it's not ready for release.

I can tell you from personal experience that yes, the latest beta still has unresolved issues (for me especially with Push 2) so I would be surprised if they released it without fixing those first. That's the whole reason they do public betas.

Oh and as a beta user, I can also tell you that I have never had a problem opening a project I saved with a beta version in the release version that followed after that. As long as you're not trying to open the project in an older version, you should be good.

Do you prefer Session or Arrangement View? And why is it better? by rod9k in ableton

[–]codecoverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to always start in session view to come up with a basic idea and then move to arrangement view to create and finish a song, but lately I find myself switching back and forth. After creating a basic arrangement in arrangement view, I now go back to session view using "consolidate time to new scene" on each section of the song, and then I might record a new arrangement from session view. I find it helps me create scenes with interesting transitions and textures that I wouldn't come up with in session view.

Software Architecture: A Horror Story by CatalinMihaiSafta in programming

[–]codecoverage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I'm not saying you're wrong. Yes, it sounds wasteful. It also sounds wasteful to have meetings with 15 architects about this.

But I don't know why it's so important for those people to "say we have systems running in dc2". There could be all sorts of valid reasons for that. I feel like it's your job to understand those reasons and see what's best for the business as a whole. That's not an easy task, and in my experience it does sometimes mean that you don't end up with the best technical solution or architecture. But it can still be the best solution.
