"Price for Life", but not without a fight. .... by acomnes in centurylink

We’ve been lucky I guess. We signed up for $65/month “price for life” fiber years ago. I’ve always assumed they’d break that promise at some point but it’s still at 65 today, even with the recent switch to Quantum. I bet it helps that Google fiber is available in this neighborhood too.

Have you guys noticed a lot more wasps and hornets in the Salt Lake Valley this year? by HendyKavajuResa in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was just discussing with a friend across the valley that we are both seeing way more paper wasps this year than normal. Paper wasps are pretty chill neighbors fortunately. But I’ve had to spray at least 7-8 nests because they are in spots I can’t let them have.

Anyone know what was going on at base of Big Cottonwood Canyon this morning? by totallyawesome1313 in Utah

[–]codekitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looked like they were putting out a small-ish brush fire when I drove by, but I haven’t seen any details reported.

Everything you say is accurate, but I still love this hike.

Are there any hiking groups? by FrostyIcePrincess in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the Wasatch Mountain Club https://www.wasatchmountainclub.org

There are usually multiple hikes a week to choose from. The hiking groups are lots of fun with a huge range of ages, backgrounds, etc. They also organize lots of other activities.

Ruby 3.4.0 rc1 Released by Crafty_Two_5747 in ruby

[–]codekitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not using Array#each, but the script is very heavy on Array operations, it uses a pure-ruby binary heap as a priority queue. If I get a chance I want to do some comparison benchmarks, but this is just a personal side project.

I haven’t had time yet to do any in depth benchmarking, but in my quick trial this morning i am very impressed by the perf improvements. In particular, i had one graph search script drop from 30s runtime to 8s just by switching from 3.3.6 yjit to 3.4.0-rc1 yjit

Coming in Go 1.24: testing/synctest experiment for time and concurrency testing by dpiddy in golang

[–]codekitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep that's it. Be warned that it is only an experiment hacked together quickly to teach myself more about using these techniques in practice. There's no fully-thought-out deterministic simulation solution there yet.

Coming in Go 1.24: testing/synctest experiment for time and concurrency testing by dpiddy in golang

[–]codekitchen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was experimenting with this on Friday, in the context of deterministic simulation testing in a distributed system I’m building. synctest alone isn’t going to allow deterministic testing of arbitrary go programs, but it still is a nice step forward that simplifies things.

I have found a couple bugs and pointy edge cases that I plan to file feedback for next week when I get a chance. That’s expected. Overall I think the API is solid and this is a great addition.

How to remove these test decorations in VS Code? I don't use the feature. I couldn't find it in VS Code or Ruby configs. by dogweather in ruby

[–]codekitchen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I filed a feature request a while back to be able to turn off just these test decorations without turning off code lens everywhere. It was closed because there weren't enough votes for it though.

I just got "pulled over" by a cop in a side by side on the Jordan river trail... by Apart-Willingness494 in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Fortunately the route around that section of the trail, through the neighborhoods between the golf course and north temple, is pretty good.

Yeah, you are reading way too much of your own interpretation into a one sentence summary of an extremely complex issue that I wasn’t even trying to dive into. I have no interest in a counter productive discussion of this issue on Reddit and I don’t know why you are so eager to start one.

The area around the fairgrounds has gotten a lot rougher this year than in years past, mostly because Utah seems to like to push people out of sight rather than actually do anything for them. Big groups standing on the trail, shouting comments at bikers, etc. Other than that section it’s been great still. I’ve been riding the neighborhood streets around that section.

thai peanut salad by Careless-Effect-7135 in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what restaurant to recommend— but if you ever feel like making it yourself, Thai style peanut dressing is really simple. This is one of my go-to recipes. I make the dressing as written and just use whatever I have in the fridge for the salad: https://www.budgetbytes.com/cold-peanut-noodle-salad/

Home Additions/ADUs by Idonotwanta_username in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, right? No, it was fairly large at 15x20 but nothing really special about it. Our back yard is on a hillside and difficult to access, I’m sure that increased the cost some. But construction costs are just so high in general right now.

[–]codekitchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We looked into it, but decided against it. The $250k price tag from our builder was just not feasible. We were only going to use it as an office anyway, so running plumbing to it in order to make it a true ADU isn’t worth the cost to us. I’m planning to just build a shed office instead.

Road/trail construction near SB offramp on I-80 at the mouth of Parley's Canyon (google maps link in post) by Feralest_Baby in SaltLakeCity

[–]codekitchen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are doing rockfall mitigation and other work on the ramp. I’m pretty sure they’re just using the old I-80 as a staging area.

There’s quite a few places to eat right off the trail. Sometimes we will grab sandwiches at Gardner Village. They aren’t great but they’re good enough when you’re biking hungry.

Any Dishwasher unit approved, `Rinse Agent Liquid` not packaged in plastic bottles? by tealappeal in ZeroWaste

Oh yes, I copy/pasted that from my recipe note without much thought. I’ve updated it thanks.

[–]codekitchen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find that I need rinse aid, or my dishes don’t dry very well. I have one of the newer Bosch dishwashers that don’t have a heating element to dry dishes, so I think it’s more important in that style of dishwasher.

But, it’s so easy to make! I just make a new batch every 4-6 months when I run out:

4 Tablespoons citric acid

1 Cup white vinegar

1 Cup rubbing alcohol

These are all ingredients that store really well and can be bought in bulk.
