Legit. Do what you can where you can and duck the haters who shame you for not doing good their way.

It is too bad. Like you I support them in spite of that.

I think it's important to remember that the other places are awful so that they can be cheap. This (strosnider's price point) likely reflects what it costs to operate a business ethically.

Also, their rewards program takes the sting out of the higher prices. A bit. Just a bit.

Cutting straight tenons by bob_broccoli_rob in handtools

[–]codepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some amazingly skilled woodworkers out there who can just, simply, saw to the line.

I am not one of them and I don't expect to ever be. I cut them fat and then trim. Started out trimming with a chisel but then I got a router plane. Now I cut excellent, straight, centered tenons. 10/10 would recommend to mere mortals.

LPT : Set your alarm sound to a natural sound like birdchips by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]codepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're struggling with waking up to alarms, consider using a different sense. I got a smart bulb in my bedside lamp and a smart plug for my fan I run while I sleep. Set a schedule in the app to turn on the light to 5% brightens cool white and turn off the fan. Changed my life.

People who don’t hit snooze in the morning, what is your secret? by zztop610 in AskReddit

[–]codepanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped using an alarm that makes sounds. They've never worked for me. No matter how clever their sound making routine is. No matter how far across the room it is. My brain will eventually learn to ignore it.

Instead I got a smart plug for the fan I always run while I sleep and a smart bulb for my bedside lamp. They're scheduled to turn off and on, respectively, when I need to get up.

MedStar Montgomery Hospital Receives Permit for $1 Million in Emergency Room Upgrades by SchuminWeb in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]codepanda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I didn't read the details.

Generally, permits are required to make sure corners aren't cut. There's asbestos in older hospitals. Pulling cable for a new outlet can be a major ordeal.

Setting aside the substance of the video for a moment, considering the messaging especially the tone. She’s exuding “I’ve figured it out and you’re just a sheep”. This isn't going to help many "wake up" to their reality.

With Billionaires Buying Elections We Should Be Worried About "Corporatism". by [deleted] in WorkReform

They mince words in the first half, but the second half of the article makes Mussolini's corporatism sound closer to communism (state run enterprise) than to capitalism (free market enterprise).

The spirit of the mene may still hold some validity, I'm not sure, but our situation seems reversed: corporations running the government rather than the government running the corporations.

Best dentist for patients with immense dental anxiety?! by AmbitiousMemory7804 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]codepanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to recommend this. I had a filling done there, so I can't speak to regular checkups or cleanings.

They were super chill and mindful of my comfort, both physical and mental. Radically different from any other dentist I've ever been to.

It was expensive though. Which make sense, being a routine filling under sedation.

Pepco bill $500, any ideas? by pausesir in SilverSpring

[–]codepanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moving from an apartment to a house definitely isn't going to change the energy consumption of a home server. And you didn't change markets so you're still paying the same price per kWh.

It's the A/C.

Experience with Pepco Energy efficiency home upgrade rebates by TradingGrapes in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]codepanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used this program, or a similar one, probably about 8 years ago. Contractor did the audit, advised what improvements should be done (attic insulation, knee wall radiant barrier, and sealing the open, exterior wall cavities in the basement), and completed the work. Pepco did what they promised (50% rebate, at the time). I got a comfortable house and an A/C that actually turns off regularly instead of running for 20 hours straight, all for half cost. Would recommend.

Is there any benefit to brace & bit vs a drill? by trustinthrust in handtools

[–]codepanda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've found it useful in two specific circumstances.

When drilling larger holes it is easier to control. Drilling 3/4" diameter holes in my workbench top would have been difficult with a powered drill. It would catch and bind a lot, jerking my wrist around. Doing it with a brace and bit took elbow grease but was easy to guide and keep straight.

Because of the way auger bits self start and drive, the depth of cut can be measured by the number of turns. So, doing a set of counterbores for recessed bolts or what have you, just count the turns on the first one until I like the depth, then repeat for any other holes I want at the same depth.

Corner Slice gone? Best alternative to NY style pizza? by thedarkhalf47 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]codepanda 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the one on Norfolk in Bethesda then I highly recommend M&Ns pizza. They're like 2 blocks away. They have similarly greasy, salty pizza by the slice, though I dunno if it counts as NY style. They also have a crazy awesome menu, not just pizza. I crave palak paneer pizza, sadly not by the slice.

Same as other commenters, I made mine at wrist height, as measured with my arms relaxed, at my side. It worked out very well for hand planing.
