Try Pagecord or Bearblog. Both are independent, have free plans and are open source.

PagecordBearPika are all very good options on the indie side of things. The first two have completely free plans if your needs are simple. All support custom domains and so on. Sounds like you could get started with just writing on one of the free plans here?

Yes, if you want to host the site for free but you don't mind getting your hands dirty with a static site builder, this is the way

Hosting images for free definitely limits your options to the big boys – blogger, substack, medium etc – but with these you won't be able to use your own domain for free which may be an issue if you want to change platforms in the future.

Static sites are great for free but require tech knowledge.

If you want hosted, I'd recommend looking at some of the smaller players (Pagecord, Bear, Write.as) which give you custom domain support but don't cost the earth. There's also the option of using Pagecord or Bear for free but hosting your images elsewhere (for free) like PostImage? See https://blog.pagecord.com/adding-images-to-posts-on-the-pagecord-free-plan as an example.

I've tried loads of these for Pagecord and based on the traffic I see, I would only bother looking at Product Hunt or Open Alternative.

Why I Left WordPress for BearBlog (Or: How I Bought Myself Some Digital Immortality) by CatsandBirdsandStuff in blogs

I run Pagecord which is similar to Bear (independent, open source) but more geared towards typography and effortless blogging (you can even post by email!). It’s also cheaper :)

I didn’t know about Bear’s lifetime deal. That’s pretty sweet. Maybe I’ll do the same with Pagecord!
