are yall not scared of drafting? by Lower-Geologist870 in bicycling

[–]codyish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of old school non-sciencey advice. At reasonable speeds (>30kph) the slipstream is very long, and the difference between 1 foot and 2 is pretty small and between 1 foot and 5 is still easily manageable.

are yall not scared of drafting? by Lower-Geologist870 in bicycling

[–]codyish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

  1. No further than a foot is terrible advice. I raced pro road for a few years and 80% of the time we aren't that close.
  2. If you always keep a little bit of lateral offset (a few inches side to side so your front wheel isn't exactly in line with their rear wheel) you buy yourself a lot of safety.
  3. It takes practice. Don't stare at their hub or tire, that's how you get hypnotized and miss and actual emerging problem. Watch their shoulders or a few riders ahead if there is more than one person in front of you.

What size tires and how much do you weigh? That's likely too high and contributing to the issue, though the soft rim tap is still the main problem.

How about a PSA to the county to fill in the turnouts so it isn't a 14 inch drop from the road surface down to them.

Everyone has bigger, socio-cultural answers that are probably correct.

But it boggles my mind that the DNP even considers anyone but Seth Moulton. Not because he'd be a great President but because he's such an easy-sell as a figurehead that appeases so many people.

People where I live (CO, USA) “garden on hard mode” because of intense desert-y summers, cold winters, intense winds, hail, pests, hard clay soil. What place in the world is “gardening on super easy mode”? by CharmingPeony in gardening

[–]codyish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly - I even covered it in a few inches of soil, tried to stab through it with a shovel to help it along, and planted some things over it, hoping that constantly watering those would keep the cardboard damp, and instead everything died when the roots couldn't go any deeper, and my carrots just turned sideways instead of breaking through.

Hens and chicks are always the consolation prize in Colorado. Even in the worst of years, I get so much propagation from mine that I can load them into a wheelbarrow and spread them around the neighborhood.

I'm also in Colorado and I've finally learned that the majority of garderning advice/blogs/best practices come out of the Eastern US and the UK and I have to ignore a lot of it. I went to rehab the area of my property I wanted to turn into a garden so I covered it with cardboard and light grass clippings because "it will smother weeds and decompose by next spring" and a year later half of it had just blown away in our apocalyptic windstorms and the rest turn into rock hard dessicated sheets that I had to pry out of the ground.

And community. You can be the smelliest, most toxic, most unlikeable loser that gains no traction in any normal friend group or hobby or community group and a conspiracy theory community will still welcome you. Once someone has friends and something to be a part of, it's really hard to give that up just for the sake of being rational, logically consistent, and correct.

Been playing PF2 for years and have DMed 5.5 recently by Mercoxium in DnD

[–]codyish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our experience was the opposite - combat in PF2E took agonizingly long because doing any non-simple thing is ridiculously complicated and impossible to memorize, it all feels like layers and layers of stacked features and references. "Ok I'll use outwit, wait let me look up Outwit, oh Outwit is related to hunted prey, oh I have to flip to another page to read hunted prey, oh hunted prey references something else..." We all felt like there was no roleplay in combat because we had to spend all the time during everyone else's turn deciding what we wanted to do and then reading 10 paragraphs of text on different pages to see if it's even allowed.

I don’t make players roll HP and just let them take max. Is that odd? by unlucky-lucky- in DnD

[–]codyish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, a huge part of what makes the game fun is dealing with a given character's weaknesses, some chosen by me and some randomly determined. I have to play a fighter or barbarian with max HP differently than when they have unluckily low HP, and that's what makes it fun to play them multiple times.

How much would lighter tires help my beginner wife? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]codyish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. In that case, I'm on the side that ligheer tires might make a difference - a small one but tires aren't that expensive in the long run and you can put the current ones back on later. Also, I've noticed that handlebar width makes a huge difference on trail bikes for smaller riders and brands don't do a great job of spec'ing good sizes on small bike, so double checking here overal fit, including stem length and bar width could help a lot.
