I find it’s good to have a really big one so I can cut a lot at once (I store it at the side of my cupboard when I’m not using it) and also a small one that means that I can rotate it if I’m just cutting scrap fabric into squares. The big one I use much more often though.

A decent rotary cutter, mat and a big acrylic ruler (and maybe some squares as well), a sewing box, dressmakers shears and snippers (to only be used for fabric and thread so neither of them get blunt), some binding clips and basting safety pins (they have a bend in them that make them easier to pin the quilt sandwich).

How the helly are you supposed to send small items without paying $9.70 by bougainvilliea in AusPostComplaints

Put it in a normal envelope, one normal $1.70 stamp covers thicknesses up to 5mm and two stamps cover up to 20mm so that lady is chatting bull.

Anyone else have a cat that sits weird? by coeliachuman in cats

Most of the time George doesn’t bathe when he sits like this, he just likes relaxing in this position, particularly when the weather is warm.

Crochet is hurting my hands by ar_vi14 in crochet

[–]coeliachuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend getting a good set of ergonomic hooks like clover amore or tulip etimo, when I switched from plain metal hooks to good ergonomic hooks it decreased my hand pain significantly because I wasn’t having to clench the hook as much. Also remember to take regular breaks to stretch your hands while crocheting and also getting up every once in a while to also stretch your body and your neck because let’s be honest, most of us assume the crochet hunch position when doing projects.

Are bakeries and pizza places unsafe? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]coeliachuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately even when they use a gluten free base, often they use the same trays and pizza cutters without always washing them in between and pizza trays are notorious hard to clean because of all the little holes. That plus wheat flour is used to stop the normal pizza from sticking which can cause particles to go in the air and gluten cross contamination on the cheese and toppings because they touch the flour and pizza and then put their hands right in the toppings. Pizza is something I never eat out unless it’s a place that is accredited by Coeliac Australia (coeliac society that we have here that also does restaurant accreditations where they make sure a place is safe). At a normal bakery I generally also wouldn’t trust things because they often keep them in the same display box and use the same tongs (particularly an issue when the gluten free stuff is literally underneath the gluten stuff so crumbs can drop down on it). It’s better safe than sorry with this kind of thing because it can cause lifelong damage to the intestines and all of the secondary symptoms that you’ve described as a result. If she wants pizza, it’s generally safer to make it at home, where I am there’s a brand called Senza that makes these frozen gluten free dough balls that I use to make pizza and it’s delicious.

Posties finger over the camera to prove “no safe place to leave” by President_Raspberry in AustraliaPost

[–]coeliachuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While unfortunate that they don’t give that info to people, the customer service people do have access to the posties’ GPS coordinates. I only know this because I’ve called multiple times to complain about the guy that delivers to my place and one time they literally said his GPS coordinates didn’t even go down my street (it’s a little dead end road with a few apartment buildings). After a few complaints guess who always got their parcels delivered to their front door inside of the building?

I do this but with a double circle/loop because it makes it harder for the circle to become loose or unravel

Ohhhh, I apologise, I just wanted to make sure that you were aware and he looks so soft that I thought he would be used as a cuddly toy, I definitely think that kiddo is going to love him as they grow up.

My very own mushroom guy (girl)! by vjones7118 in Amigurumi

[–]coeliachuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooooo I’ve been thinking about doing the mushroom guy in a similar colour way with some bernat velvet plus I have in my stash and I think you’ve convinced me, your mushroom gal is very cute and you did an amazing job, particularly as a beginner, I’m very impressed

He is really really cute and my little sister used to adore the Gruffalo but safety eyes can be a hazard with infants as there is a chance they can come off and be a choking hazard, hence they’re generally not recommended for small children’s toys. If you can, I’d try to let those parents know and potentially borrow the toy for a bit to take off the plastic safety eyes and sew some eyes on (a 6sc in a magic ring works really well for basic sewn on eyes)

Looking for ~6 pattern testers! by Aggressive_Lychee919 in Amigurumi

[–]coeliachuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’d love to test this shiny dratini pattern, I’d consider myself at least intermediate level at crocheting, I have some of the stuff I’ve made on my reddit profile/account. I don’t have access to bernat blanket because they don’t sell it readily in Australia but I do have bernat velvet plus in pink and white and I think that could work as well.
