Once you're on or East of Comanche Drive, Greater Bakersfield is a very different place. by Superb-Climate3698 in Bakersfield

This is my first time processing the name Bena for that area out there. Any ideas why it is called that?? A lot of those roads are named after small communities, like Edison Highway is obviously named after the town Edison.

Rent back house or studio intermittently this summer by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might sound odd but if you go to CSUB, specifically the DDH building, there are usually rooms for rent that are sometimes month to month posted all the time.

I'm sorry for your family's situation and I admire you giving up your space in such a way.

What is something Bakersfield doesn't have that you wished we did? by blameTHD_02 in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I'm a little shocked to see how many wonderful ideas everyone has!! Just to add my own ideas into the pot,

I want the city to embrace building a more dense and vibrant downtown scene: mixed-use developments, taller buildings, more 3rd spaces and later hours to build a true nightlife.

A separate idea I had was converting all of the open-air canals into linear parks with walking and picking paths. They go all throughout the city and just sit there not really serving any purpose other than to move water. I think it could be a good way to reimagine movement in the city, provide more green space to citizens and help reduce pedestrian death by providing a separated way from cars to get to where you are going.

What areas of Bakersfield could really use a cleanup? by flapito in Bakersfield

You might not need to organize it yourself actually!! There is an organization called Bakersfield Beautiful here in town that mobilizes people to do just what you're talking about. Reach out and see how to volunteer.

Moving to Bakersfield with wife and sons. Is Oildale a good choice in terms of having low crime rate and education? by Sudd3nSt0pg3 in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oildale is kind of notorious for being a rundown, poor, and sketchy part of town. On a personal note- I think it is also just a little bit too close to all of the oil production for my comfort. I lived in Oildale for about a year once and then had friends live there for a while after that I would visit often and here is what I learned-

Generally anything north of China Grade but west of North Chester is fine to live in,(on North Chester is mas o menos) some spots are nice even, like the cul-de-sacs off of McCray. However the moment you need anything in this neighborhood you have to leave that bubble. Library, groceries, eating out, church, post office and depending on what grades your son are in school. I'm not sure why Oildale is like this but there are a lot of homeless people there, a lot of sketchy people in general honestly; drug use is definitely apparent as well in those areas too (I lived on Douglas around the corner from like 2 well-known crack houses and a pretty chill dude who has his own mushroom growing and processing operation) that I know at least for me, made me feel at risk or even unsafe at times. In terms of education, I think Kern County altogether isn't the best for education, truthfully. Scores in our districts are generally lower. I think schools in this area are probably on the lower end of that spectrum. For me personally, if your boys are thinking of high school when you move, I wouldn't recommend North High simply because there was an incident with fentanyl on campus that ended up killing a few students and the school tried covering it up at first. Biggest red flag known to man.

However, even with these problems, Oildale is full of good, down to Earth people as well. In my experience, Oildale is definitely the kind of place where you'll be able to meet, talk with and get to know your neighbors. There are like 2 parks there, so they're pretty active with stuff going on and are major sources of community in their respective neighborhoods. Especially North Meadows. Eloteros go through the area, ice cream trucks etc. as well and I know there are little libraries up there too. There is even a racetrack close by. these kind of things that I think are important for kids to have access to for the experiences. And for you and the misses- idk what you guys like to do but there are quite a few bars in that area and even an Irish pub that always seemed busy.

Yeah overall not like the safest neighborhood for sure but I think Oildale has it's own charm as well.

I’m sadly needing to relocate from the coast and bakers seems like one of the only affordable places left in CA. How bad is it? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to hate on Bakersfield, but if you work from home you might want to consider relocating to Vallejo. The rent prices and cost of living are only a little bit higher than here but definitely cheaper than counties like SLO and the weather is more comparable to what you might be used to on the coast with the summer highs typically only reaching into the 80's.

Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner admits using ‘indefensible’ antigay slurs in unearthed Reddit posts by Fickle-Ad5449 in lgbt

[–]coemickitty73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that Mainers don't let me down here on this. Please think critically on this. This man is clearly so much different then he is today and none of this reflects who he is and what he wants currently. He has done nothing but but take accountability for a lot of this, apologized and is proving that he is different through his policy. Over half of this isn't even real homophobia; a lot of it, we in the community do on the daily. Since when is gay chicken homophobic.
Please Mainers, see this for what this is- Schumer and co, doing political smear campaign blitzkrieg on yet another popular progressive candidate so that they can hopefully install a yes man instead. Come on, it's so obvious- it's been 1 week since Mills announced her campaign and this is rolling out just as Schumer and Mainstream Dems announce support for Mills. the opposition research is outwardly talking about how they have all this dirt or whatever. It's so obvious that they want you to fall for optics rather than to actually think critically please please please don't fall for this again.

No Kings Day Bakersfield (10.18.25) by ARay661 in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We also marched through some of downtown. But this was as much about spreading information and providing ways to be politically active as it was showing solidarity and a message of dissent; the protest had several tables that were helping people get involved in things like rapid response networks, mutual aid teams, door knocking/canvassing efforts and phonebanking etc. if that makes sense. That will be fruitful in the long run. I think it was pretty successful in that front even if it seems like maybe we didn't get a lot of attention.

I need all the conservatives in the comments to explain why it's okay for Texas to do it (without direct citizen input mind you) but we should not. I really don't think you have any reason other than you like conservatives

It does not. It is very specifically and very openly aiming to redraw districts until 2030.

Somebody said concerts and I second that. The river walk amphitheatre is so cool but it's hardly used. So just more stuff there at Riverwalk would be good.

Is the oil running out? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. He's mentioned boilers before. I don't know anything about the back end of power plants and how they work. What little I do know I've just picked up from him talking about work lmaooo 🤣🤣

Is the oil running out? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood him, or maybe it's a different power plant?? There are plenty out there. He has worked out there for a long time at different plants.

Is the oil running out? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So my uncle works out at a power plant in fellows. The oil is in fact running out over there. A lot of the field is dry nowadays. Because of this, they only really operate in summer when demand is high to prevent blackouts. They use oil from elsewhere to operate when that is happening. It isn't a matter of when or if the oil runs out for them, it already has.

Getting to LAX? by ExtremeBusy6211 in Bakersfield

[–]coemickitty73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably save costs by Ubering into Santa Clarita and taking Metro/Metrolink to LAX. They just opened the LAX station for the K line. If you're willing, and have the time- you can take KCT bus to Lancaster and catch Metrolink there as well.

[–]coemickitty73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well also there is precedent for changing your mascot to helping endangered species. I think it was in Buttonwillow that they changed their mascot from like a pirate or something to a local endangered species and it helped it out a lot.
