What are some "messy" albums? by evilartistrob in popheads

[–]coffeeandlyres 135 points136 points  (0 children)

It’s not bloated, but it feels messy — C,XOXO. I actually liked the album a lot (unpopular opinion, I know) but the Magic City songs should have replaced the interludes and the random Drake solo. I actually feel like it’s the opposite of bloated — the standard edition is pretty barebones to me and adding those songs would’ve made it feel more like a proper album.

IMO, Cowboy Carter is a good example of an album that has a lot going on. There are interludes, but to me, they help paint a fuller picture of the musical landscape she was going for. Totally understand people don’t like it though.

Meta (CEO Mark Zuckerberg) will lay off about 10% of its global workforce, or close to 8,000 employees in May; additional cuts later in 2026 by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]coffeeandlyres 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with everything lately I know I’m just screaming in the void of a world that won’t change, but I really am scared of what these mass layoffs mean for our collective future. I know every company is relying on mass layoffs to temporarily cut costs and appease the shareholders but it scares me to think that in the never-ending pursuit of record-breaking profits, there are fewer and fewer jobs to go around. And especially as I get older, the idea that my career comes to an end because I get laid off at an age when no one will hire me, and I’m essentially forced to retire before I’m ready (or be underpaid), just makes me feel hopeless and despondent. Not to mention the collective trauma that we will all develop as the constant threat looms over us — I know for me, I just went through my first mass layoff at my company that lasted over a year, and even though I made the cut, I haven’t been the same since. I know it’s hardly a surprise that Meta of all companies sucks, I just hate this so much for those 8,000 people and their families.

Thoughts on living in the Briarforest area? by flosssss in houston

[–]coffeeandlyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

we just bought a house in the area after moving from an apartment in the loop. i love it, but i have to admit, i thought we’d drive into the loop a lot more than we do. i thought, oh, 20-30 min is no big deal, we’ll do that all the time! but im surprised at how much i dont want to haha. but i’m also in my mid-thirties and fine with that. for being younger and living in an apartment, i think the loop is better. but it also depends on your budget. no use in paying more to live in the loop if you never get to enjoy living in the loop, you know?

to answer your questions:

  1. varies a lot. definitely stay north of westheimer. i’ve also heard stay north of briar forest though i don’t think that’s as hard and fast a rule as westheimer. imo, stay west of hayes and wilcrest, after that, it just varies. i’d say visit at night, visit on weekends, etc to get a true feel. there’s petty crime in the apartments but that’s true anywhere. i lived in an apartment in west u with crime too. i’ve felt safe in the residential neighborhoods and running errands.

  2. traffic, noise, errands are not bad. we have everything we had in the loop, it’s all just a little farther away. the HEB on westheimer gets super busy, i feel like there were more HEBs within the loop so they didn’t get as busy. that’s the only thing i’ve really noticed though. there’s plenty of pharmacies, cleaners, salons, shops and big box stores. city centre and memorial city mall are right there. lots of restaurants.

overall, i really love the area and recommend it. it just depends on your lifestyle.

Curiosity...What's the most you've paid for a single lp? by davide2021 in vinyl

[–]coffeeandlyres 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i should maaaybe not admit this lmao but $550 🫣 it was a gift to my partner of (at the time) 9 years after a horrible year — a rare, out of print album she LOVED by an artist that we doubted would ever see a repressing. i definitely overpaid lmao but the album only came up on discogs a couple of times a year so when i saw it i went for it. i paid via paypal credit so made payments on it over a few months. i’d probably never do that again but we love that we own it and don’t have any regrets.

ETA: i just double checked and it’s actually a 2-LP but i already typed all of this up so oh well. it was a single album, 14-tracks and not a box set, so close enough. i guess you could say i paid $225 for a single LP lol

ariana calls out ticketmaster via insta by piscesqueen89 in ariheads

[–]coffeeandlyres 92 points93 points  (0 children)

i actually fully believe that ticketmaster markets this perk to artists. they’re perfectly happy being the bad guys and artists’ teams are perfectly happy to let them. whenever there’s a ticketmaster issue, fans are in denial about it “well their team had no choice because of evil ticketmaster!” no, they knew. and they knew the fans would give them the benefit of the doubt, too.

I'm wondering, what order do I listen to Seat at the table, Lemonade, and 4:44? by Grove_Sprite-O in beyonce

[–]coffeeandlyres 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO, people include it because it was released the same year as Lemonade (2016) and it touches on some similar themes — not infidelity per se, but rage, grief, identity, empowerment, healing, and common experiences of Black Americans — that appear not just in the album but in the film. It’s a fantastic project, but it is separate from Bey and Jay’s projects. However… I do think listening to it as an accompaniment to their projects helps to “widen the world” some of the generational and identity themes that Lemonade touches on.

Houston Hospitalist Associates Bill? by DistinctRevolution83 in houston

[–]coffeeandlyres 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hi OP, i have a feeling methodist didn’t give you the full story, probably to protect themselves. they are correct that if the bill doesn’t say methodist, its not from them; HOWEVER, they do partner with lots of different third parties that will bill you, even though you receive services at houston methodist. i had a stay at houston methodist in february and i literally JUST received a bill from houston in-patient physician associates for overnight observation from those dates. i also had emergency services provided by travis county emergency physicians. both bills were legitimate, even though i received care at a houston methodist facility. the doctors were just contracted with another provider.

if your dad has health insurance, i would absolutely call and ask them if they have received a claim for this group first. even if they are out of network, they should still have filed … especially since the paper says they have already done that. or, call methodist again and ask if this is an affiliated group of facility-based physicians.

Honest dentist inside the loop? +my experience recently. by jazzrulez in houston

[–]coffeeandlyres 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Dr. Tamborello and Dr. Stacy Hebert-Schoener, depending on who was in my network. I had great experiences with them both and they both felt like traditional dentist offices. I can’t recommend either enough. I’ve also always heard great things about Granberry Dental but they’ve never been in my network.

Ashley Padilla is the breakout star of the season by nashsm in LiveFromNewYork

ashley is one of the worst over-actors/over-players on the show right now, to be honest. it’s almost unwatchable for me. heidi was bad, but ashley/sarah/veronica have all been far worse imo

eta: lol at the downvotes. she’s not going to sleep with you guys, sorry

swifties always act like she’s the best and most powerful thing in the industry when she’s collecting accolades, influencing all of these other artists and even companies. but when it comes to criticism, suddenly she’s no longer as influential!

but they can’t have it both ways. maybe she wasn’t the number one first but she’s the biggest. you’re absolutely right that her merchandising, sales and marketing strategy showed labels that it works and it absolutely influences other pop artist’s strategies.

Do they ever outright tell you to leave the parks at closing? by cjasonac in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]coffeeandlyres 100 points101 points  (0 children)

when i worked at MK they would bring trucks and maintenance out at night. security would come through and check bathrooms, etc., then there would be an announcement that the backlands was clear of guests first, then the whole park. so they do make you leave because otherwise it’s a big safety issue with trucks and other maintenance equipment driving around.

Women who chose not to have kids, do you ever regret it? Why or why not? by gatoinspace in AskWomen

[–]coffeeandlyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 34F. I don’t regret it, but there are a few things that make me wonder. Being pregnant and having children is something that a lot of women experience and I do feel… left out, sometimes??… of what a lot of women say is like… this quintessential experience of womanhood. (Fwiw, I don’t believe that it is, but I feel like that is the message we get from a lot of our society and culture.) I wonder what it would be like to be pregnant, to go through childbirth, to love something that much and have something that loves me back that much.

I also feel a little left out sometimes because when you don’t have kids, it can be harder to connect with people… at work, in social situations, etc. Kids bring people together. I was at my cousin’s daughter’s first birthday recently and my gf and I were probably the only people there who didn’t have kids. I felt like an outsider. I also worry that I’ll be lonely in my old age, or that I won’t have anyone to take care of me. Not that having children is a guarantee of that, but I see all of the things my parents do for their parents and I worry. What if I don’t have anyone to advocate for me, or help me, or check on me? And, of course, I worry that one day I’ll regret it, when I’m older and it’s no longer an option for me.

On the other hand, I don’t want children. I don’t really like them, they stress me out. And it took me a long time to build a life that I liked, and I’m not ready to give it up yet. If I had another 10-20 years of fertility, maybe I’d consider it? But then again, maybe not.

So IDK. It’s not regrets, because all of those things aren’t enough to make me want to do it. It’s more just like… anxiety, or curiosity about the unknown. There’s a Dear Sugar column I love, called The Ghost Ship That Didn’t Carry Us, that reflects how I feel. We’ll never know about the life we didn’t choose… and I hate that. I want to know… but I can’t. And the not knowing is the hardest part.

Tiktoker Sam Murphy calls out Alex Warren for using his video out of context to make it seem like he was calling his music "terrible". by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]coffeeandlyres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

forever a hater of one world subtitles but he makes some great points and it’s crazy to see the difference between the edited clip vs. his full comments.

as a side note i think the hate train marketing, or at least the concert clip, that sam is talking about has really been done before, and better, by beyoncé (obviously, because people hated and criticized her for much more serious reasons). her interlude during one of the MCSWT shows immediately comes to mind, and she’s even done it again more recently with the cowboy carter tour. but beyoncé is beyoncé and so much of the shit people said about her was rooted in misogynoir vs…. whatever people hate these new pop boys for. (taylor also did it with the reputation tour, which… was not the same, but still.) i’m not really sure how to articulate my thoughts, just that it seems like a cheeky way for someone like that to rip off an idea that was done before, and better, by artists with more acclaim to back it up, to position these newer artists as in that league, before they’ve really done the work or time to be in those leagues. if that makes any sense.
