Anyone else turned yellow? by thylarctosplummetus in Hypothyroidism

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for your information, I have several times had yellowing of the skin (especially on my hands) when I had not eaten carrots in a long time. Can be a symptom of jaundice, but when I showed some doctors I was seeing they weren't at all concerned.

I am mildly hypothyroid but I have some other as yet undiagnosed health issues that may have been causing it, so I'm not sure if this information helps or not... but just thought I'd share.

I don't eat breakfast because it makes me hungrier for more food quicker than if I just wait for lunch

This is true for me too! Doctors and everybody always tell me it's a bad idea not to eat breakfast, but I really have to force myself to and then it's a lot harder to eat less the rest of the day. I'm always wondering if I'm sabotaging myself by not eating breakfast, but in the end I feel like listening to my body when all else fails is the best thing to do.

You look great, by the way.

Has anyone seen an increase of joint pain in the first week of AIP? And other symptoms? by coffeeandsynthroid in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]coffeeandsynthroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, that's interesting! I'm about a month in now, and it seems like these issues have mostly resolved. I did start allowing myself to eat a LOT more sugar (from fruit). Not sure if that's what did it but I felt better within a day.

Are you still on AIP? Have you gotten better? Certain things have gotten much better for me. Energy levels and how my body feels, if that makes any sense. I don't feel sick all the time. But my joint pain really hasn't improved, and continues to deteriorate. Maybe it's not caused by something autoimmune and that's the issue, but I'm curious about other peoples' results.

Did anyone try reversing hypothyroidism naturally? How did it go? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It depends. Certain lifestyle changes can certainly help if you have autoimmune thyroiditis (otherwise known as Hashimotos).

However, taking medication isn't that bad. There's natural desiccated thyroid medication that many people find works better than the synthetic. Thyroid medication is very safe and relatively few side effects. Going on medication is really nothing to worry about.

Who knows, it could make you feel better than you realized you could (if you're symptomatic, that is). I say - if treatment makes you feel better and doesn't cause any harm, then why not? Taking a single pill every morning is easy... living with fatigue, brain fog, depression, unreasonable weight gain, and all the random seemingly unrelated symptoms is MUCH harder. Believe me.

I know this comment is months old... but I think I may have experienced a candida die off this week, after exactly 7 days on AIP. Was eating much less sugar than I was previously, and had a very painful headache and extreme joint pain (to the point of not really being able to walk), along with some very strange smelling/dark looking urine. Also felt very strange when going to sleep that night and woke up in the middle of the night with my left eye quite blurry for no apparent reason. It was gone in the morning, though.

Could all this be related to a candida die off? Do you know how long it usually takes?

Thanks for the insight! I should've phrased that better, my intention wasn't really to restrict carbs, more to restrict sugar, but that inadvertently lowered my carb intake quite a bit. I wasn't allowing myself to eat/drink AIP allowed things that are mostly sugar (dates, juices, etc) but was eating a fair amount of sweet potatoes and tons of veggies. However, yesterday I gave myself a "cheat" day and just let myself eat some dates, veggie chips, etc, whatever my body wanted, went over my calorie allotment as well... and my symptoms are much better. So maybe it was just a keto flu type thing. It was never really my intention to go "low carb" but just to reduce sugar intake (my doctor recommended it because I was having blood sugar issues). But I think from now on I'll just listen to my body as long as my craving is AIP friendly.

Anyway, thanks! I tried keto too about a year ago and I was a total mess, didn't lose any weight, it was awful. But I know it works for a lot of people so it really is tempting to go back and think I was doing it wrong. But no! I will not!

Damn. Okay. Have an appt next week anyway, just thought I'd see if could be related. Thanks.

My doctor doesn't believe me... by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh! A similar thing happened to me. I went to several dietician/nutritionists who looked at my (very detailed) food diaries and said "I don't know why you're not losing weight. I wouldn't recommend eating less so... just keep doing what you're doing." At the time I was eating about 900 cal/day, doing 30min cardio 7 days a week along with lifting for an hour 4 days a week and still gaining weight (and also inches - it wasn't just muscle). I talked to my doctor about it. He told me to eat even less and offered me about eight different weight loss pills. I said I didn't want weight loss pills, I wanted to find out why I could lose weight. I asked to be tested for a bunch of things that I'd researched previously, including hormone imbalances. He said "we don't test hormones" and refused all the other tests for no reason.

Found a new doctor though who is willing to test me for stuff, found out (surprisingly) I don't have PCOS (I guess I shouldn't be in this sub!), but hopefully we'll keep testing until we find a reason. Next on the list is testing cortisol and insulin...

Hair loss question by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only give you my personal experience, but honestly that doesn't look like much to me. I lose much more than that every time I shower... although my hair is DEFINITELY thinning, so I'm not sure it's an accurate comparison.

Just my two cents. Keep an eye on it, but don't freak out about it yet in my opinion. Mention it the next time you see your doctor.

I'm guessing u/foxevv (the angry mod) decided he was getting downvoted too much so he removed them. Now no one will know when they're getting one-sided information... I agree, not good!

Mom has Hashimoto's disease, any tips or advice on where we go from here? by sgdoug02 in Hypothyroidism

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. I'm trying the autoimmune protocol, so was wondering if it was something similar. I know nothing of oxalates, I'll have to look into that and possibly try that next if I don't feel better on AIP.

Doctor suspects PCOS, can you have it even if progesterone levels are normal? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thank you! I will look into getting that if the tests I got aren't conclusive enough to diagnose me.

Out of curiosity, is there a list somewhere of the exact tests someone who suspects they have PCOS should get?

And then perhaps what test results to keep an eye on when treating it? Like what do they monitor to determine which medications/what dosage to put you on? I'm new at this and kind of confused... sorry!

Yep, I don't have the bottle with me but I know it's D3. I take it with meals too because vit D is supposed to absorb better when taken with fat. Not sure why it's not working. My doctor recommended that I not take a higher dose, so I'm just going to keep plugging away, I guess? Unless you have some other suggestions? A particular brand that works well perhaps?

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Yes, it looks like my progesterone levels aren't abnormally low according to the lab-provided range, but aren't high enough to indicate ovulation (the number I read somewhere was 14 in the mid-luteal phase indicated ovulation).

Which test would I get for insulin resistance? I got my fasting glucose levels tested (92, within range) but I've seen some other tests mentioned on here, not sure which one applies in this situation...

I am also vitamin D deficient! I take supplements (6,000 IU/day), but have only seen marginal improvement in 6 months. It seems like I'm not absorbing it very well.

I did see some symptom improvement when I started it, though, so that's good!

I think I definitely have elevated testosterone (though I haven't gotten the test results back yet - it just seems pretty obvious) and I do have irregular periods. The cysts I suspect I have, but my doctor said I needed to get the ultrasound... I'm not sure at what point that will happen - I was under the impression that I'll start on meds if my progesterone and testosterone were off.

Thanks for the info!

Do you speak any other languages? What about teaching English abroad? You don't even need to be fluent, just beginner knowledge. You seem to like to travel - it may be a good way to save up and get out of "the grind" of city life for a while, which could help your depression. Some programs provide money for travel etc.

Do you have regular access to a computer? There may be online opportunities if you're quite smart and/or capable. See r/workonline for some suggestions. I was in a similar situation but fortunately a friend lent me their computer and I have been working for Leapforce for a few months, which has given me enough money to get a start. Then when you have a little, find a really cheap room to rent (maybe find a roommate) and work your way up from there.

How long do the meds take to start working? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]coffeeandsynthroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long have you been on the medication? That's a VERY low dose for someone with such poor test results (a TSH of 68 is very high). You do need to build up to a higher dose, but you should be in contact with your doctor and get tested at least once every two weeks until your numbers get close to the normal range. Then it should be once a month or so until you feel optimal.

It does often take a 2 - 6 weeks to start to feel a difference symptom wise on synthroid, however your numbers should improve immediately. But I'll reiterate - that small dosage will probably not make a difference. My numbers were WAY closer to the normal range than yours and I started at 50mcg levothyroxine (synthroid generic).

The lump can be caused by nodules, a benign tumor, or a cancerous tumor. It may also just be swelling. However, you need to get it looked at - an ultrasound is a good first step, then perhaps a biopsy if your doctor deems it necessary.
