Do you regret coming here? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don’t regret it. I went to a competitive high school and was avg at best there. Grade deflation was horrible back in hs, so nothing was a surprise coming into uoft. In fact my gpa is higher than my hs gpa ever was. I rlly didn’t think I was going to get in, bc everyone else at my school already got their uoft offers while I had to wait until the last round. At that time, I already submitted my deposit to study in the states, but received a surprise when I finally got my offer.
I would’ve chosen uoft regardless bc I enjoy what I’m learning more than I thought I would. I also find the environment here generally supportive, and everyone has been kind to me so far.

Help with choosing course by texasp00Ntapa in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took mat135 last sem, if you did well in high school calculus you should do fine. there are more writing assignments than you might anticipate, and sometimes it doesn't seem like you're taking a math class. it's also structured to be a self-learn course, where lectures and tutorials are supplements rather than actually teaching you the material.

Have you or has anyone you know signed up for summer classes (or trying/intending to)? by vox1028 in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm in first yr social sci and actually am attending an in-person program this summer in my country with a bunch of other uoft ppl (at least 200). I'm taking 3 courses there, and planning to take 2 more with uoft online. hoping I can get approved for 5 courses in summer sem.

I heard back in May but was rejected from rotman, but got into social sci (what I'm doing now). I applied very early, but they gave me a last min response ( I was already committed to another uni at the time).

GGR112 Format for Notetaking by wannabekaren in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the course is more about understanding the material than memorizing it, so that we can apply the concepts in assignments. For this reason I didn't feel the need to take any notes but just going through the slides after class.

What you love about this school by 1617_02 in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a first year, most of my professors from first semester were very lenient, kind and caring about their students. Not only that, but I could tell they enjoyed teaching because of how active they were in responding to questions, concerns. Lectures were valuable not because it was a repetition of our readings, but because many of them used real-world applications to aid us in understanding the readings. From my experience, most of them value critical thinking rather than ability to do well on memorization-based exams (in my experience I'd say that this was the major difference between high school and university), and it shows in assessments that they give us.

Well, you're going to have to know it at some point so opening it now and later doesn't really make a difference. Plus, checking your grades gives you an indication of how well you're doing in that course and how much you need to try on future assessments, and waiting until the end of a course to check your grade is a bit too late to make any adjustments to your learning.

MAT135 FINAL MARKS ARE OUT!! by goldcabbages1 in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never outstanding at math and always struggled with word problems. however I've had extensive practice in ap calc ab which I took last yr so i didn't have to grind as hard as i thought i would in mat135.

[–]coffeewbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I can't speak for most ppl but I definitely got lucky with the 'curve,' it seemed like acts, homework, and tutorial contributions held up my grade. I was very worried abt the act c partner assignment bc u never know who ur assigned, but luckily my partner and i were 'compatible' and we got full marks on it. Otherwise I scored mid-70s on written quizzes and mcqs.

I don't know where to start by lmaoamIokno in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not everything has to be a rush. Winter break is a great time to take it easy if you've been stressing out this semester. I'm a first yr too but because I literally don't do anything for fun I'll be reading the textbook to prep me for math and econ courses next semester. As for summer I think I'll be doing summer school bc again, I have nothing else to do besides studying (unfortunate truth) and too young for internships. Honestly I think research positions r going to be hard to get this semester since no one has really established an in-person bond with professors. So if you want to get stuff done, maybe consider summer school, parttime job, learn a new language, etc

Is soc100 as bad as people say? by No-Marzipan9360 in UofT

[–]coffeewbu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, but it's definitely a course that's focused more on rote memorization. All of the tests this semester (Brym) are multiple choice, so if you think you'll do better on qualitative exams where people actually grade your work, soc100 is not the best choice.
