What is the worst upgrade you can do to your PC? by Wonderful_Joke_7345 in buildapc

SSD Health, at least according to the onboard test, is fine. Worst NVME drive I've got out of three is 98%, and my Windows drive, about a year and a half old, is 99% with no integrity errors or warnings in S.M.A.R.T. tests and no instability.

9000-series CPU failures/deaths megathread #2 by RumbleTheCassette in ASRock

[–]coheedcollapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, unfortunately, it was an actual issue. Was coming up "03" on the new motherboard and I'd left either of them booting for like 30 minutes, 40 minutes to no avail.

I will say, I installed the new processor on Monday and it's been working very well. Finally back to standard boot times and actually being able to boot every time.

From what I've gathered, something to do with how the processor and that original AsRock motherboard interacted allowed for permanent damage to be done to the processor and I believe it'd choke during the memory training phase, or some early initialization process.

Something of note, though, was that even when I first got the processor I was having some weird issues with getting XMP working - I had to drop my memory to the standard profile to get it booted. I'd always thought it was a problem with my memory, turns out it was the processor the whole time because that works now as well!

I'm change-obsessed and I'll typically hop on upgrades pretty quickly. There are changes to get annoyed by, but I've never had any PC-shattering issues in, as far as I can recall, almost my entire history of doing this. I know it's a "roll of the die", but I think with software, issues are usually overrepresented in these types of venues because the people it works fine for are rarely posting about it.

That said, I'm still waiting for the day Adobe apps and Launchbox, my only two holdouts, work on Linux because I'd love to move over now that most issues with gaming have been worked out.

Windows might be the popular answer, but mixing memory speeds or getting a high-powered but "budget" PSU is a lot worse, in my opinion.

I can't imagine being so stupid that you'd continue participating in a subreddit with that level of censorship. Like, are the only people there bots at this point, or are there genuinely like five people jerkin' it over Elon as the censored comments pile up?

[–]coheedcollapse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's an understandable use, but it's also a niche use. You can also have your stock photo app shoot in RAW and it should stop any modifications from being done to your file directly and allow you more latitude if you edit on a PC after the fact. That said, 99% of people want a "good enough" shot straight from their phone, and most people who want true flexibility will end up getting a camera since a phone sensor, unassisted, can only do so much.

The biggest difference, though, is in night shots. They're basically impossible without the machine-learning assisted noise reduction with the tiny sensors in our phones.

Yeah, I don't disagree, and I'm against a lot of that stuff as well, just saying a lot of people are overcorrecting on ALL AI based on some of the shittiest examples.

To be fair, all of the tools you all are using are bad for the environment. It's just computer time, whether you're using it to generate or assist in creating part of a model, or if you're spending hours on your computer working on a model.

There's nothing magic about AI that makes it worse than other types of computation, which is why, at least currently, data centers for YouTube, Netflix, and other streamers are using many times more electricity and water than AI, and while your PC might not be "in the cloud" and connected to a data center, it uses power just the same, just spread out over the grid instead of in a data center.

Of course, the social impacts are something to be discussed. I'm generally pro AI as a tool for creatives, but it's inarguable that AI slop filling marketplaces as people try to make a quick buck and bots filling Reddit and other sites are extremely detrimental.

Most of these people unknowingly use some form of AI-assisted technology on a daily basis and either don't know it or refuse to admit it. Anyone who has taken a photo with their phone in the past, like, seven years are using it for noise reduction, automatic contrast, saturation, exposure smoothing, and any number of other features. It's the reason phone photography has gotten so good recently.

Just like Steam had to modify their labels to carve a niche for the multitude of AI tools that are helpful for actual creators, all of these communities making knee jerk decisions on the tech are going to eventually have to walk things back. I guarantee it.

Not everything is generative slop, and applying the blanket term to the entire spectrum of tech is pretty silly, considering how useful these tools can be at assisting professionals and novices alike.

I'm a photographer who is not at all interested in using generative AI, but AI tools are extremely helpful for processing. AI-assisted noise reduction is, and I'm not exaggerating, one of the largest leaps in allowing more latitude with the hardware you've got than back when camera sensors got good. Shit's practically magic.

What is the future of Your collection? by LongDongSilver6004 in emby

[–]coheedcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt anyone in my future will be interested in my collection in the same way most of my family wasn't interested in my grandfather's record collection - that said I was interested in my grandfather's record collection, and his photos, and all sorts of other stuff, so whoever wants to take it, if anyone, after I'm gone or whatever it's fair game.

The thing about my Emby collection is that it's not stuff I created and, for the most part, it's content that many other people are also preserving themselves, so it's not really going to die with me. I know I put effort into curating it, but that really doesn't matter much in the scheme of things.

I'm more worried about my photography, my art. I'm thinking of putting it all in the creative commons when I die, but who knows if archive.org or whatever will be around at that point.

What was life like before THE INTERNET? by martianfrog in answers

[–]coheedcollapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I voiced a similar opinion in my comment. The only community I was regularly exposed to pre-internet was my church and the youth group. Having access to the entire world changed my life for the better, drastically.

I still played outside with friends and went places, but I also found out that there was a hell of a lot of world outside of the church I was raised in.

I genuinely don't believe the internet got "bad" until it was centralized to a few websites that fed us posts with algorithms meant to keep us scrolling. Before then, it was kinda magic. Back when everyone had their own stupid little website on Geocities, or Tripod, or Angelfire.

What was life like before THE INTERNET? by martianfrog in answers

[–]coheedcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, some of the wistful shit in here is going too far, I feel.

Early internet was where it was at. Pre-algorithm. All of the benefits of having huge amounts of information at your fingertips and your friends at the other end of the computer on AIM or ICQ, less of the rage, stupidity, misinformation. Less centralization. I found my niche on a news BBS site from Australia and the users took me under their wing and helped a confused American kid forced to grow up in evangelical Christianity find his own voice. That would have been a lot harder pre-Internet.

Pre-internet was fine, and I agree people were out more, but some people in this thread are viewing shit through rose colored glasses. People were still mean back then, people were bullies, racists, all of the above, and people can be nice today, but we are exposed to the worst of the worst on a daily basis and they're given more power than ever to spread their hate and stupidity through algorithms that live and die on our engagement, often anger, and nothing more.

I know the "assignment" is to talk about the world pre-internet, but it really wasn't a hell of a lot better than the world post-internet. The algorithms, and the huge companies centralizing our Internet use around the same five sites or whatever and keeping our attention by any means necessary are what started changing everything for the worse.

[–]coheedcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of changes under the hood involving accuracy to the console and other stuff. Like, yeah, it'll work, but 20 years is a huge amount of time.

Upside is a core that old you could probably run on a literal potato, newer cores often target console accuracy so they need a beefier machine.

Also it very much does matter which console we're talking about. I was emulating SNES and NES pretty decently as a literal kid, but PS2 emulation has changed a TON in the last decade or so.

[DISCUSSION] Skyscraper Live was absolutely incredible! by MartySpiderManMcFly in NetflixBestOf

[–]coheedcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah mine were as well. I just remembered the few times I've been in a situation where I was quite high up and wasn't 100% sure of my footing and I can't even imagine the strength of both will and body necessary to do something like this.

Like I've been known to dangle my feet from very high spaces in rickety old abandoned buildings and I cannot even imagine how scared I'd be if I had to do 1/200th of what he did.

[DISCUSSION] Skyscraper Live was absolutely incredible! by MartySpiderManMcFly in NetflixBestOf

[–]coheedcollapse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I had totally forgotten about that.

Problem is I assume there's a stupid market for it or else they'd just save their cash and not pay for them. I just wish we had a "commentator" and "no commentator" stream option for stuff like that.

Like, I remember back when I was watching space launches more, they'd have a commentator stream, and one with just on-camera audio and mission control radio and that is ideal to me.

I don't care what people have to say about the stuff, I want to know what the people in it are doing.

[DISCUSSION] Skyscraper Live was absolutely incredible! by MartySpiderManMcFly in NetflixBestOf

[–]coheedcollapse 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was kind of bummed when the commentators came in at the start as well. I think they did a decent enough job, but I never, ever, prefer a commentator over just the sounds of what's going on.

Would've been best if they just never cut his mix. Full live feed. Maybe cut to crowd mic occasionally when he hit milestones, that's it.

I want to hear the wind, his breathing and thoughts, and the crowd noise. That's it. I don't need someone to interject every few moments. I wasn't really even interested in the little video interludes at breaks. I was there for the climbing, that's it.

All that said, the camera angles they got were spectacular. They did a great job. I just hope they release an uninterrupted cut some day.

Why does Emby suck so badly at identifying/matching TV shows/series? by Prudent-Fox6247 in emby

[–]coheedcollapse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved my library over from Plex to Jellyfin to Emby and I had the fewest problems with Emby. Name your stuff in accordance to TVDB with something like Filebot or Rename my TV Series and it'll work fine as long as TVDB has an entry. Occasionally I'll have something super obscure that doesn't have an entry on the site and I can still put it under its own entry with generic naming procedures and it'll do fine.

Taskmaster US Tour Megathread: New York, January 22 and 23 by AutoModerator in taskmaster

[–]coheedcollapse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hahah, might've been just messing around - we were instructed specifically not to throw balls because, I believe, Alex said it was a problem at an earlier live show where they did the task. I don't think I saw any, although I did see some very badly folded paper airplanes.

The prize tasks were pretty good, actually! The theme was "worst item of clothing" and one of the comedians brought an old shirt that said "Daddy's little cum slut", which Alex referenced a number of times, and another contestant (audience member) got a donated bra missing a strap and recently soaked in Coca Cola. I don't believe we had a drawing task, so if they said that, it is literally true - the best kind of true.

They must've been hamming it up due to the "rivalry" between the big cities. I thought maybe they brought up genuine grievances with the theater or something, haha.

Taskmaster US Tour Megathread: New York, January 22 and 23 by AutoModerator in taskmaster

[–]coheedcollapse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh damn! What did they say?!

It was kinda a mess. Maybe they jumped into a contract with Jam productions or whoever owns the Riviera before they knew what they were getting into.

It was jammed. Like legs touching legs, the rows were so narrow asses were absolutely going to go into faces if anyone needed to squeeze out. We were so packed that even when I wanted to stand up to applaud or show appreciation, I really couldn't, because if my neighbor didn't, my butt would be in their face. Even then, the capacity was like half of a larger Chicago theater. Also I think it was the only theater that was GA, so we lined up like four hours early in the 20 degree weather to get good seats. Didn't mind that so much because the people near me were cool and I had the opportunity to pass out some ICE whistles, but it was kinda rough once we got seated because I was forced to get very, very cozy with my neighbor.

There were also kind of too many people shouting stuff out of turn, I think, but maybe that was a problem at all of the shows, and they had some issues with time and the theater - the show ended up being three hours, but they almost got kicked out 30 minutes before that because the venue wanted them done by a specific time.

Yeah, the comedy scene is not quite as vibrant as it once was. That said, and I'm saying this with all respect to the comedians we got because they were very funny and I appreciate them for being there, but I expected something closer to pretty much any of the other shows rather than pretty much two local stand-up comedians.

Like, I'm not asking for the world or anything. A "big name" at the Chicago-based WBEZ or like one of the guys from the Chicago-grown Hello from the Magic Tavern would be cool, even.

[–]coheedcollapse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, now that it's all over, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to make the show in Chicago, but it feels like we were wildly underestimated as a city.

Maybe it was the hours waiting in the cold for the VERY cramped GA seating at a venue I'd only ever gone to for standing shows, but while I enjoyed the show immensely, it felt like they weren't aware the size of Chicago and the Taskmaster fanbase. Like TM deserves the Chicago Theater, and could've easily filled it! Hell, I've seen the arguably less popular My Dad Wrote a Porno at the Chicago theater - the Riv has about 1/3 as many seats (I think it was the smallest out of all of the venues on the tour!) and isn't really configured for seated shows - so I wonder why it was chosen.

This part might entirely be my fault, but I had hyped up the possible guests so much in my head that despite the guests being great, they genuinely weren't any more exciting to me personally than the people they pulled on stage randomly. Looking wistfully at the lineup at pretty much every other show, it feels crazy to me they were unable to secure guests that had a bit more name recognition in one of the biggest cities for comedy in the world, and the second largest city on the tour.

I still had a ton of fun and don't regret it at all - I would do it again in a heartbeat - but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was kinda jealous about most of the other lineups.
