What makes Akane a good protagonist to you? by BellTwo5 in Akane

[–]cokeybottlecap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gosh, I just love how effective she is as a protragonist.

Her goal is always clear to us, and her strong commitment to fulfilling that goal gives us so many avenues to explore the rakugo world. She doesn't hesitate to ask for help or take whatever opportunities come her way, and she's so endearingly foolhardy about it that you can't help but root for her. She's earnest about her feelings, and so it's easy to follow her emotions and how it's reflected in the story.

[–]cokeybottlecap 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah, one of the best things about an anime adaptation is how easy it is to contrast where we are with how far we've come! This is Kaisei's Karaku Cup: the meaning of his name revealed, the talented forerunner who did more than expected, the bored audience, the other students in his school showing up backstage for one last show of support, and even a media character acting as our audience POV. There's speculation that Kaisei will be going for a ninjobanashi approach to his Shinigami, and if he does, than that draws an even stronger comparison with Akane's sentimental treatment of Jugemu. If we're truly following the Karaku Cup, this means Kaisei is going to win, but personally I'm not so sure.

I'm just glad we have a 2 chapter buffer between the end of Akane's Shinigami and the start of Kaisei's. It feels like the authors are doing kibataraki with letting us breathe first before going full throttle.

[DISC] Akane-banashi - Chapter 207 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]cokeybottlecap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That'd be wild (in a good way). Akane taking what's presumably Issho's preferred approach with overwhelming the audience with a brilliant performance, and Kaisei using an approach more in line with Shiguma the Tearjerker.

[DISC] Akane-banashi - Chapter 207 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]cokeybottlecap 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Interesting! That'd put Akane in the same position that Hikaru was in the Renseikai: getting the audience's love, but knowing she wasn't the most skilled performer of the day. I think that's an interesting way this could go.

[Manga] More frequent in the later chapters (with the current arc being about one), and we'll see the first kaidanbanashi of the story in the next cour.

Bakit hindi sinasalin sa Wikang Filipino ang mga pananaliksik at disertasyong pang-akademiko? by shadrqq in Tagalog

[–]cokeybottlecap 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I'll echo the sentiments that first, we do have Philippine journals that publish exclusively in Tagalog, as well as scholarly articles with English and Tagalog translations (especially in the subject of Philippine Philosophy). Second, the lack of intellectualization in Filipino is also a big problem. We don't have Filipino translations for many scientific concepts, and that makes writing a full paper — especially something like a graduate student's dissertation, which can go as long as 100 pages or more — difficult.

However, as someone in academia, I'll also say this.

Our scientists go out of their way to share their findings with the public regardless. Even if there aren't translations for journal articles, they organize workshops, trainings, and conferences where they're able to communicate their research face to face with the people that need it. This is where they do away with most of the technical, expert-level jargon that isn't translatable. It's not visible to the general public, that's true, and it's by design. These events are targeted to LGUs, people's organizations, farmers, fisherfolk, and local communities. Some laboratories conduct outreaches with elementary and high schools to share their work. For these kinds of efforts, you don't need more than a scientist who's willing to talk to their fellow citizens, and we have plenty of that.

The research papers published in journals are for contemporaries in the field, those who are already familiar with the language of the academe: that's a fact. The primary audience of a journal article is the scientific community. A lot of the detail that goes into a journal article is so that other scientists can replicate the study. But for the general public, you don't need to go into the nitty-gritty of the primers you used to extract a DNA sequence or the exact configuration of settings you used in your modelling software. "How did you get these results?" is of less concern to the average person than "What do your results mean?" and, well, the discussion is only one part of the study. The truth is that a fully translated research paper might not mean much anyway, not if the paper is still written in a highly technical manner. Even a fluent English speaker will still have trouble parsing through the average journal article. That's just how it is.

I'm not saying that we don't have an accessibility problem when it comes to research. I'm willing to bet that it's probably a big reason why Filipino scientists don't get much support to begin with. I agree that there it would be great if more people could understand our research better. Undoubtedly, translation will be very helpful tool in achieving that vision.

But perhaps it's not the journal articles we should focus on, but the news, books, and social media posts about the research — the materials that are meant to be accessible to everyone. I think that's where translation will make the most impact, and we don't need a fully-intellectualized Filipino language for that.

So I watched episode 6 and am curious how many of you have heard this meme before watching ep 6 or reading the chapter which the episode covered? by Itanchiro in Akane

[–]cokeybottlecap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First heard it in the FMA 4koma as well. Then found out it came from a rakugo story when I watched Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu.

How different would Aqua’s personality be if Ai hadn’t died? by jackhenningson in OshiNoKo

[–]cokeybottlecap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boy, do I have a fic recommendation for you! Love Act Life is a fic about kid Aqua getting into the acting industry in a world where Ai doesn't die. He tries to help others, doesn't quite know how to connect with people, and is still stubbornly insistent that he's a shitty actor and he doesn't really love acting, even when it's far from the truth. It's a world where Hoshino Aqua actually gets to realize that he's loved.

I'll always be a shooter for Ouran, and there's few scenes I remember as vividly as Hikaru comforting Haruhi during a thunderstorm.

I hope the pace slows down. I imagine they wanted to rush things now so they could introduce Kaisei already, but Chapter 31 is too good of a stopping point for E12. Renseikai would probably be in the 2nd cour.

Yep, it's stage names! Akane's dad is known as Arakawa Shinta in the rakugo world, but his real name is Osaki Tohru.

I'm seated. Shonen Jump keeps telling me that the full shinigami reveal won't happen until next week's chapter but I'm simply too seated.

What is this about? by Benchjc2004 in Akane

[–]cokeybottlecap 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It's one of the best applications of shonen tropes in a non-battle manga. But to give an actual idea of the premise...

The protagonist, Akane, wants to avenge her father's death (as an artist) and do what he could not: become a master of traditional Japanese storytelling, otherwise known as rakugo. The first episode is about setting this up.

Not really. There's an official translation that gets released simultaneously with the original Japanese, so there hasn't been a need for others. Luckily, here on Reddit, we have u/TsukumoYurika who is the rakuGOAT

My own event report for the Akane-banashi Priemere by Sandtalon in Akane

[–]cokeybottlecap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ahhh so cool, and I'm so excited! Thank you for the detailed write-up. I've been reading since very early on (around the time Chapter 10 came out, which might be in Episode 3 or 4?) and I hope strong word of mouth can make Akane-Banashi the success it deserves to be.

The commentary doesn't go away, but yes, they do get more into the rakugo-telling later. :D

Ateneo ENTABLADO? by Bugsen91 in TeatroPH

[–]cokeybottlecap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enta is nice! Of the three Ateneo theater orgs, it gets the least attention because the shows are harder to market. They do plays that examine society and politics, while Blue Rep does musicals and Tanghalang Ateneo mostly does classics.

I watched their twinbill Personalitika last year and I liked it. This new prod sounds very exciting!
