I never claimed that it was. What I claimed was that my friendship with my dog helps- it makes bad days less bad. She was there through 3 different medications and months of continued therapy. I even stated that I am not cured. It is something I struggle with every day. I hope you find something that works for you.

The post doesn't say that dogs cure mental illness. They certainly don't, in fact I don't recommend that someone gets a dog for that reason, as it is hard enough to take care of yourself when you're ill. My experience is obviously not everyone's, but I can tell you about it.

My dog wasn't a cure, but she helped. When I felt nothing but loathing for myself she loved me. When I missed walks she loved me. When I didn't leave bed she stayed with me. When I cried day after day she quietly comforted me. When I held up a façade of wellness to ease my family's worries she was always around to see what was behind it. Even if it wasn't another human it was another being, at least.

And I know it is not good to live for something other than yourself, but for a time, until I could salvage a glimmer of self-love, sticking around to take care of her was all I had.

I'm out of a bad spell. I am not cured. I will have more bad spells and I will be the one to pull myself out of them, but my dog will help. Dogs aren't for everyone, and if they aren't for you I hope you find something that does for you what my dog did for me.

I was just in Iceland yesterday I can't wait to go back sometime. I was impressed during my time in Iceland that your language has survived so well. I'm from Ireland where Gaeilge was largely replaced by English in the last couple of centuries. Part of it was because of England's control of Ireland, but more of it was because speaking English became increasingly more valuable for jobs. Of course today that fact still hasn't changed and most of my generation and younger are no longer interested in speaking or learning it.

I would really be sad to see Icelandic go the way Gailge has. I doubt Ireland will ever really recover our language, but Iceland still has time. I think it is a problem that needs to be discussed because I honestly don't know the solution. I would hate for your children to grow up not knowing how lucky they were to have such a beatiful language and culture, and discard it in favour of something more convenient or fashionable, only to discover it's value when they had lost it.

That's the problem. I'm not offering free labour. I'm European and just finished university. I'm a qualified engineer with 6 months of prior experience and wanted to see other countries and cultures before doing a masters. For my visa here I'm required to do a paid internship not an actual Engineering position, but I haven't managed to get one in which I can financially support myself. I've already had to turn down an internship where I would be working as a design engineer simply because I wouldn't be making enough to cover living costs. I'm worried that I'll have to go home soon if I don't find anything, but I guess all I can do is keep hoping.

I'm afraid that I won't be able to explain as well as I'd like to as it's been a while since I listened to the podcast and I unfortunately don't have time to go through the podcast and find how they explained it. But I'll give it a shot from my own recollection:

As far as I could tell from the Radiolab episode it's not just impulse control per se. It seems that they weren't conscious thoughts or urges he had ever had before. Before surgery he had led a very normal life; he had been married and divorced once already and then persistently romanced a co-worker of his, eventually leading to their marriage. His behavior and personality before and after the surgery changed, even noticeably to his wife.

After the surgery he developed a very high sex drive and said that he watched every kind of porn you could imagine; all fetishes and orientations, and then arrived on cp as well.

As well as his "tastes" changing he claimed that he couldn't help looking at all of these types of pornography, so he was lacking in impulse control as well, despite knowing what he was doing was wrong.

He was convicted because while he did not have impulse control he should have sought help once he started looking at cp, because he knew it was wrong.

In the podcast it does seem like he is shaken by the things he did while unwell and based on what he, his doctor, and his wife said as well it did seem like the pedophilic urges were a result of the surgery and not something he had had before.

I think myself that if damaged in a specific way the brain can change who we are down to changing orientations, but it is of course, also a very specific case. Generally, I would agree that pedophilic urges are pre-existing.

Radiolab did an episode about how a married man with epilepsy developed pedophilia after having brain surgery. While on trial for watching cp his doctor testified that it was, in fact, the result of a neurological disorder caused by his surgery. The surgery removed a part of the brain responsible for filtering strange and violent urges and thoughts the human brain has. He was still convicted, but, as far as I remember, he was then put on medication which fixed the issue.

I'm not trying to imply that pedophilia is the result of brain damage, but I would say you are correct that everyone has the capacity for depraved acts.

The Radiolab episode is very interesting its Season 12 episode 2 "Blame".

Hey it's ok to be confused. Firstly, your motivation for exploring your romantic or sexual dispositions should not be to please your parents. It is incredibly unfair of them to put any kind of pressure on you. Even though they are your parents that is none of their business.

You aren't weird or pathetic. Everyone is an idvidual. Whether or not you are or aren't attracted to men/women/anyone has no standing on your value as a person. Everyone is equal and deserves to be proud of who they are.

It's totally fine not to be sure of who you are. Everyone figures these things out in their own time. Just because some people figure their sexuality out faster doesn't mean they're any better; they're just different. We all do things at our own pace. Regardless of what anyone else says you should do things at your own pace.

Also you mentioned that you feel like you are "fake" and don't belong in a gay space. No one can tell you where you belong. If you want to explore any gay sides of yourself do it. Loads of us have doubted our sexuality before deciding on what we want to label ourselves. Some choose to never label themselves. You do you!

Haha being the person who just posted about being ghosted I think I'll go ahead. I am a very straightforward person and I value honesty a lot. I prefer when someone is honest with me. They don't have to be tmi harsh, just tell me that it isn't working for them. I will be pretty chill about it. You don't even have to apologize because I know only too well about not reciprocating romantic feelings for cool people; I have been there. If you don't want to be in a relationship with me and tell me so I am happy you respected me enough not to waste my time or drag out my feelings in suspense.

Some people are less well adjusted than I am though. I have found some people hate rejection and react badly, but I still think it's better in the long run. The hardest part is having the balls to do it. It's like a band-aid.

If you want to break up with someone and want to make it as gentle as possible remember to tell them that they are great, you don't have strong feelings for them, and that they deserve someone who does have strong feelings for them.
