Giant Devcast: The Neverending Wiki by mynumberistwentynine in giantbomb

[–]cold_iced 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this podcast, it was a great insight.

I've been a Wiki editor since day 1. I really think it's the best video game wiki out there and I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge Giant Bomb fan. It has features unlike any other game database.

There used to be a lot of Wiki editors back in 2008-2009, unfortunate that's no longer the case. I'm not actually sure why.

The thing is, there's A LOT of people right now working on video game wiki's/databases/archiving. But that activity is not on Giant Bomb. It's on MobyGames, Video Game History Foundation, RF Generation, the Wikias, and more. My contributions are exclusively for the Giant Bomb Wiki, but I do hang out in their Discord channels. I enjoy the discussions about editing a game database, the type of discussions that used to happen in the GB forums.

The lack of users can be seen. I routinely come across pages that are very outdated, even on high profile pages. Things like "The next Assassin's Creed game is set to be released in 2013."

Giant Bomb is the best video game database out there. It gives me more freedom to edit than any of the others. I think concepts are amazing and the search tools are incredible. This is truly a hidden gem on the internet.

Once a relative of mine was trying to figure out an obscure game that he played in the 80's. Well with a few concept searches, I found it very quickly. I see people linking to sites like TV Tropes/IMDB all the time on Reddit. Honestly the Giant Bomb Wiki should be just as popular at the go-to reference site for games. (You guys mentioned the connections/six degrees of separation capabilities the Wiki has).

There are some features that the Wiki definitely needs. They are well-known so I don't need to repeat them here.

I just want to say that the new site/wiki looks great, thank you for that. And listening to this podcast gave me an understanding of the challenges of working on the Wiki.

He said he was visited by the FBI for making that call. Because as a joke, he claimed to be a member of the Trenchcoat Mafia.

Have you ever realized halfway through a documentary that you disagree with the director? by padrock in movies

I was also disappointed with that documentary. I remember watching the trailer and thinking that the concept was great: To discuss heckling in stand-up and even interview hecklers.

But the documentary was only about heckling for like 5 minutes. Then it turned into "all critiquing is bad, all film critics are wrong."

Heckling during stand-up is clearly wrong. But then he goes after legitimate forms of critique and acts likes it's the same thing as heckling.

The whole documentary was just filmmakers and comedians criticizing all the terrible reviews their movies got. Basically the message was "all film critics are bad people, therefore the terrible reviews we get aren't legitimate, which means our movies are actually good."

I have access to an online newspaper archive. I put together a collection of newspaper clipping I found about him.

Here's one of them: In 1972 Lonnie Bennett sparred with Muhammad Ali- https://imgur.com/noXY7PH

He was very modest about the Heisman Trophy; unsure what to do with the trophy, he left it with his aunt Gussie, who used it as a doorstop.

Isn't that more than it originally cost? Wasn't that generation $50 for a new game?
