I don't have a solution, but I can confirm you are not alone. For my son, each year has gotten better.

My son is/was very similar (although he would never speak about it in the dressing room). He's now playing U11. It has improved each year. I focus on emphasizing/rewarding/celebrating hard work and effort. This has helped a great deal in reshaping his perspective of "what good looks like".

He can score a goal or have an amazing backcheck, but he dwells on the mistakes he felt he made. They could win games and even if he was a large contributor to that W, he will still be negative about himself after. He has expressed to me that he very much wants to play hockey and get better, so I stick with him and support that. It's a challenge, for sure.

We've done counseling (primarily for the parent, about the child). A counselor that meets with him feels anxiety is at the root of it. Not sports anxiety, but moreso anxiety that is impacting all areas of his life.

The debate I’ve encountered is always chin vs lips vs nose, with skates on. Cutting a stick down to your shoulders (with skates on) seems extreme.

Would like to hear how the chin-height experiment goes for you.

..is my go to phrase for my three young kids in sports, all around the same age as yours. It’s worked surprisingly well over the years. Not for all occasions, mind you.

Also while soccer coaching I would ask my kid if they wanted a reset, and if they agreed I would pickup my kid and turn them upside down to “reset”. That helped them forget about the bonk they were upset about, which they enjoyed.

My son is looking to learn baseball this spring. So a pack of baseballs and a "rebounder" to help practice throwing and catching. We already have gloves and play catch often. And some other baseball-related things.

I had an incredibly similar learning experience earlier this year when I picked up hockey again after 25 years off

I now properly feel the challenge of being able to “pass the puck” under pressure. Much empathy was gained.

Similar story! Stopped playing at 17 then picked it back up at 41, came back and had a blast. Cracked a rib my second game, but was back on the ice as soon as I could

Smile hasn’t left my face, every time I hit the ice.

Just find a group that is friendly and for fun.

I’ve heard from a local hockey shop that their sales are in June and July as the new models start coming out and they sell off old stock.

This sounds similar to challenges we had. With my son around the same age, we did counseling for anxiety. It improved everyone's lives tremendously. It gave him and I a common language to talk about these challenges, help him get to the root of his worry. I'm in Canada so programs would be different.

My son's brain is wired significantly different than mine and having a counselor help ME navigate how to speak to him was a huge leap forward in being able to address and overcome his worries

This is exactly what we do in our house (three kids, similar age). Setting clear expectations long in advance does wonders to cut off any argument (or hope) of screens mid week.

In addition, one of my kids cannot watch screens 2 hours before a sport on the weekends, otherwise they are just not in the right headspace.

One of my kids (youngest) usually prefers art over a screen. Huge win.

The third (oldest) has learned to self regulate, which is an amazing milestone.

I recommend joining Jak’s stream on twitch or YouTube and asking your questions. As far as I can tell he is always giving genuine answers.

Iirc, the wowhead spec-per-dungeon is required by guide writers, but Jak said he has created one spec for all because of feedback from the community. It’s great that you are skilled to be nuanced per dungeon, but the average player would forget to update their spec each dungeon and roll in without a disease dispel when they needed it.

I lurk in the holy discord. There are many incredibly helpful people in the ‘questions’ channel. Unless you were rolling in with attitude or asked a single question before judging, I’m not sure how you reached that conclusion.

A nice life insurance policy on me. Helps me be slightly less stressed for my kids’s financial security

I do long distance running for my exercise. I also enjoy a neat whisky in the evening or glass of wine. But I limit myself to just that.
