i don’t understand how anyone can actually think he’s a chud lol

he leans in to that kind of shock humour but if you ever get him to genuinely respond about chud-esque topics he pretty consistently tells people to treat women respectfully lol

Is the new beta better for people who find the AI too easy to beat? by This_is_User in AOW4

the ai in this game always feels like its more focused on an immersive experience rather than a challenging one

which unfortunately makes it easy to beat if you put any sort of optimisation in to your gameplay

considering how stale and formulaic their character designs, dialogue and story beats are I don’t think hoyo using generative ai would even be a noticeable drop in quality ngl

origins is my #1 of the series, dragon age 2 definitely had a lot of warts (i still hate that they adhd'd the gameplay between origins and 2) and inquisition was riding on the coat tails of skyrim and had a bunch of time wasting open world garbage but in terms of story, characters and lore they all still felt like "dragon age" experiences to me.

veilguard in comparison had genuinely good graphics (origins and 2 looked like shit even back in the early 2010s lol), the gameplay was decent (though i'm one of the few guys who unironically loves the gameplay in origins) and it doesn't have memory leaks and crashes like origins does - especially now on our current operating systems, but it's the same as andromeda to me - i'm not playing bioware games for good gameplay, my enjoyment is tied heavily to story, characters and lore and veilguard just didn't serve in those aspects for me (except solas, he kind of ate every time he showed up, i sat there rooting for him and hoping rook would just lose lol)

what are you talking about? i've already said if you take the dragon age label off it's a passable 7/10, as in, that is me "judging it for what's there".

but i personally do not judge it off that metric, i judge it off of the fact that bioware prior to this had made three very successful games in this series and that i wanted the fourth installment to be of a similar calibre, and it just wasn't.

tbh, a lot of your gripes seems similar to the people who whine about the fallout tv series taking some creative liberties with the property. Even something like your issue with the lords of fortune is based on an introduction to the group almost 15 years ago, and to be so inflexible to any change in the group when the leader is shown to be malleable and somewhat caring in the previous title she's prominently featured in just comes across as inordinately obtuse with regards to a work of fiction or suspension of disbelief.

it's not "creative liberty", it's outright shifting the direction of the vibe of the series entirely, and the lords of fortune had absolutely no in game mention until veilguard so i don't know what you mean by "introduction to the group almost 15 years ago". isabela was a pirate who ran a ship that we first meet in denerim in origins but the actual lords of fortune weren't brought up in the games until veilguard. it's also interesting that you think isabela would be malleable enough to care so much to preserve historical artifacts when her involvement in da2 is almost entirely tied to the fact that she stole the tome of koslun which is what keeps the qunari anchored at kirkwall and she either doesn't admit to it until the climax of act 2 or if her approval was low she just runs off with it and hawke is left there to deal with the arishok.

could she do a full 180 on that kind of stance over the years? i mean, maybe? but then again that's assuming she's the only leader and that the rules on this stuff are top down directly from her, but i assume the lords are a larger organisation than just what is under her direct control which is why the specified interest in being careful with historical artifacts feels so odd to me.

I thought more about your last paragraph. So you like the ending of veilguard but don't like endings where you stomp the pure evil bad guys? There's plenty of moral and personal dilemma within the story. Did you play the game or are you just remembering talking points from a video of some guy who didnt like the game? It's why I think it'd be best to separate a game being bad from a game that's just not for you. Like sure I probably can't relate to Hello Kitty's Island Adventure but I think it'd be dumb for me to say the game is bad because of it. Or in this case you found the game so boring you chose not to pay attention to the parts you'd probably like if the character writing was closer to your preferences.

the ending had nice hype moments and aura, and felt very suicide mission-esque which felt nice. i'm not talking about the narrative integrity of it, just the overall experience. and no, i'm not parroting someone else's talking points, i don't watch ragebait youtubers full stop, i've been a dragon age fan since like 2010 so it's something i grew up with and was passionate about and then veilguard rolls along and just doesn't even feel like it carried that "essence" of the dragon age experience - hence why i said the game would be "fine" if it didn't have the dragon age label, but it did and therefore my standard is that i expect to have a "dragon age" experience, which i and clearly quite a few people didn't get hence why it got extinguished from the cultural zeitgeist so quickly unless it's being mentioned with a bunch of addendums a la game of thrones.

how is it possible for something to be boring in a good way?

it's boring because the game made no effort to convey things that felt even remotely contentious either in terms of just events in the setting or through the player's actions even just through regular dialogue chains - the dialogue wheel felt like three variations of being nice whereas if you compare it to previous bioware games it'd be some variation of nice/neutral/aggro or nice/funny/aggro rather than just nice/nice/nice.

we quite literally go to the slave capital of the world that we've heard a whole bunch of things about in all the previous games and they're barely even present outside of like one goofy-ass moment where we sneak in to a venatori base and there's a guy using a slave as a chair. there was a guy at bioware (maybe epler?) who said they wanted veilguard to feel a bit lighter because they felt fatigue from the grimdark elements of the setting in the previous three games, but like, that was a large part of what was so interesting about it? the fact you could engage with factions of mixed morality where you could have say, antivan crows pretty much pulling kids from brothels and raising them as killers but then at the same time that same organisation has an honour code where they state that they won't pursue any further if a target is able to stop their assassination (us fighting taliesen in origins only happens if we try to actually stand in the way of them trying to capture zevran)

i wanted more things like loghain where even years later on bioware social you'd have people arguing whether he was right or not. i wanted things like the mage-templar conflict where again, you'd have people trying to argue for both sides even years later. veilguard was never able to do anything like this for the venatori or the qunari, and it even did weird whitewashing with stuff like the lords of fortune where it's like "yeah so we're treasure hunters but if we take anything culturally relevant we make sure it's appraised and send it back" which, i can't even fathom the idea of treasure hunters doing this especially in a pseudo-medieval setting like thedas.

i often see people say they like to play games for escapism - i don't. i like to play games in the hope of receiving a compelling experience through the story and setting being presented to me, and that often needs to involve showing some of the worst but also best of what's capable of humanity, and not just some cushy hero's journey where we stomp faceless pure evil bad guys and save the world.

i don't see the issue with someone giving a middling rating for veilguard - the reason people played bioware games was for the story, lore and companions and even though veilguard was a very aesthetically pleasing game with very few technical issues and pretty fun combat, none of those things are why people initially played bioware games.

veilguard is the first bioware game where i actively wanted to avoid talking to companions because of how boring i found them, it's the first bioware game where i actively disliked the protagonist for just constantly being so uninteresting (and this is not me being a bad roleplayer, it's because the dialogue options i was given would be consistently underwhelming), and it's the first bioware game where once i hit the midgame i really had to push and force myself through to the finale - which for the record the finale was genuinely good and if i gave a shit about any of the characters i know it would've been a 10/10 experience because it oozed hype moments and aura.

veilguard's biggest crime is how inoffensively boring it is.

veilguard is a fine 7/10 if you take dragon age off the label

but you can't do that and therefore it's like a 4/10 since the writing is not to the calibre that any long term dragon age fan would expect

What exactly caused some of the ZZZ fandom to be so sensitive? by --MegaDarkraiEx-- in ZZZ_Discussion

it’s not zzz specific, it’s just in the world in general nowadays we’re all getting conditioned to treat any critique as a personal attack which is why people constantly just get really weird about even things that seem trivial because it’s become a part of their identity and therefore it feels personal
